    The paper addresses the problem of historical role and impact of John Paul II’s teachings on the dispute over Polish messianism which has been consistently present in the Polish literature and philosophy over the past two centuries. The article is an attempt to determine the pope’s actual contribution to the development of the idea of Polish messianism, and evaluate the ultimate significance of this contribution within a broad perspective of the evolution of Polish political thought during the latter part of the twentieth and early decades of the twenty first centuries. The starting point in the discussion is the contemporary historical-philosophical research in this field, and the final conclusions are oriented towards the philosophical qualification of the most recent attempts to revive the messianist ideology on the basis of papal thought.

    Karol Wojtyła w 1953 roku rozpoczął na Wydziale Teologicznym Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego wykłady z  katolickiej nauki społecznej. Jego kurs opierał się zasadniczo na notatkach przygotowanych przez uprzedniego wykładowcę, prof. Jana Piwowarczyka, usuniętego z powodów politycznych. Przez długi czas skrypt Wojtyły nie był  dostępny dla badaczy. Komentatorzy snuli różne  rozważania na temat jego zawartości. Jedni twierdzili, że Wojtyła był w tym czasie bliski marksizmowi, inni zaś kwestionowali jego autorstwo wykładów. W 2018 roku została w końcu opublikowana po polsku pełna wersja wykładów. Jak się okazuje, Wojtyła z reguły tylko powtarzał lub parafrazował materiał Piwowarczyka, choć w wielu  wypadkach dodawał pewne oryginalne treści. W tym artykule analizuję te dodatki, starając się odnaleźć w nich ślady najwcześniejszych poglądów Wojtyły. Argumentuję, że wskazują one wyraźnie na wpływy polskiego romantycznego mesjanizmu. Wojtyła w pewien sposób przekładał swoje wczesne inspiracje na język katolickiej nauki społecznej. Dlatego właśnie pisał o idei królestwa Bożego na ziemi, przyjmował naukę o misjach  poszczególnych narodów i bronił religijnego znaczenia cierpienia zbiorowego.
    In 1953 Karol Wojtyła started his lectures on Catholic social teaching at the Theological Faculty of the Jagiellonian University. The course was generally based on notes prepared by Professor Jan Piwowarczyk, a former lecturer, removed from teaching for political reasons. For a long time Wojtyła’s own script was not available for researchers. Many commentators speculated about the content of his early lectures; some of them argued that Wojtyła was at that time close to Marxism, whereas others denied that the lectures were actually authored by him. Finally, in 2018, the full version of the lectures was published in Polish. It turns out that Wojtyła usually merely repeated or slightly reformulated Piwowarczyk’s material, though in some cases he added some original content. In this paper I analyse these additions to find some traces of Wojtyła’s earliest views. I argue that they clearly indicate influences of Polish romantic messianism. Wojtyła in a way translated his early inspirations into the language of Catholic social teaching. That is why he wrote about the idea of the Kingdom of God on earth, supported the doctrine of the missions of particular nations and defended the religious meaning of collective suffering.

    Paweł Rojek in his book Liturgia dziejów [Liturgy of History] reveals the importance of the Polish romantic messianism for the thought of John Paul II. He carefully defends this tradition against the popular charge of heresy, and argue that in fact it preceded the formulation of Catholic social teaching and some crucial doctrines of the Second Vatican Council. In the longest chapter of his book, Rojek developes “Messianism of Work, ” an idea very close to me. For John Paul II the Eucharist was an inspiring symbol of cooperation of God and man in the history. In this paper, however, I rise some fundamental doubts concerning Rojek’s interpretation. First, he seems to adopt a false theology of nation in which nations are thought as kind of persons. Second, he suggests that John Paul II supported an alleged “third way” between communism and capitalism. Finally, he neglects the universalistic dimension of papal vision. In result, messianism in this interpretation might function not as dynamic universalistic utopia, but rather static, nationalistic ideology.
