    Opis:
    The modern agglomerations development remains under the influence of current global trends: economic, environmental/climate, social, technological, geopolitical ones. At least six forces are expected to further disrupt the urban mobility landscape, especially coastal one. From self-driving vehicles and the sharing economy, to vehicle electrification, mobile computing, the Internet of Things and Block-chain technologies, each of these trends is quite significant on its own. The actions undertaken by city authorities aim at focusing citizens' attention on the need to improve air quality, decrease congestion in city’s main streets, invest in one’s health and physical condition, which increases the level of quality of life, and in turn provides the city with considerable economic benefits. The purpose of the paper is to explore global trends shaping life quality in coastal agglomerations with a special regard to sustainable mobility and to present the ISO 37120 - a tool allowing measurement, based on the indicators, of the cities resilience and performance.

Due to globalization processes and liberalization of the EU transport markets the seaports are under the huge competitive pressure put mainly by container transport operators committed in the logistic transport chains. Polish seaports have difficulties in facing such a competitive environment.

    The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic that began to spread across the world in 2020 still poses a threat not only to human life and health, but also to the global economy. This situation led to the breakdown of many supply chains, and this could have resulted in the collapse of the international exchange of goods. The COVID-19 affected the shipping industries development: shipping operators, port operators, government authorities, shippers, seafarers, passengers, supply chain operators and others. The paper presents the impact of the pandemic on the working model throughout the results of a survey conducted among the office employees of a shipowner company being one of the leaders in the maritime container transport sector. It aimed to investigate the effects of the pandemic as regards the management and organisation processes in the light of digital transformation within this enterprise. Employees were asked to express their opinion on the advantages and disadvantages of the remote work and its influence on the way they performed their duties. At the beginning, employees were most affected by the lack of direct contact with colleagues. At the same time, many of them declared that after the end of the pandemic, they would like to combine the remote and office work . The hypothesis of this research reads as follows: as a reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic, a new working model has been created allowing the continuity and the efficiency of operations in the maritime container sector, therefore ensuring the resilience within the global supply chains. The results prove that the transition of office workers to remote digitalised working mode allowed the company to continue operating efficiently during the first phase of the pandemic. Actually, this new mode, which was initially meant to be only a temporary solution, has become the dominant form or a combination with the traditional mode of work, creating a kind of hybrid version working model in the company.

Part I is devoted to the main directions of advances in the maritime education and research towards the challenges in a global meaning. In this context, the education and research potential of the Gdynia Maritime University, as one of the world-leading maritime universities, is shortly presented. Part II is dedicated to the Gdynia Maritime University experiencing the 21st century challenges. The GMU’s contribution and good practices concerning the participation in modification of the processes of the IMO STCW 78/2010 convention, adoption of programmes into the international and national qualification frameworks’ standards and procedures, as well as the development of research addressed to a new technological and organizational solution are described and analyzed.

    In the paper, divided into two parts, a problem of advancements in maritime education and research facing the 21st century challenges, based on the case study of the Gdynia Maritime University (GMU) experience is discussed. Part I is devoted to the advances in the maritime education and research towards the challenges in a global meaning. The maritime education challenges are focused on contribution of the University’s representatives in full implementation of the STCW 1978 as amended in 2010 convention, and on the flexible adoption of the academic specializations and programmes to the European and National Qualifications Frameworks, as well as to the needs of a global and local labour market. The research advancements in the maritime universities are basically oriented to marine transport problems, and their main focus is concentrated on the implementation of new technologies, effective and reliable technical and organizational solutions, friendly for users and environment. Part II is dedicated to the Gdynia Maritime University experiencing the 21st century challenges. In this part, firstly the education and research potential of the Gdynia Maritime University, as the one of the world-leading maritime universities, is shortly presented. And next, the GMU’s contribution and good practices concerning the participation in modification of the processes of the IMO STCW 78/2010 convention, adoption of programmes into the international and national qualification frameworks’ standards and procedures, as well as the development of research addressed to a new technological and organizational solution are described and analyzed.
