floating autonomous desalination
Opis:
Water scarcity in small Aegean islands is considered a major problem for their development. On the other hand high potential renewable energy sources are available. Therefore a floating desalination unit was developed in order to treat the problem in an ecological manner. The floating unit has been operating for four years at sea close to a small island. Marine environment and autonomous remote operation led to a more complex design with several sensors and safety mechanisms. This paper illustrates and applies Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) modeling to Floating Ecological Desalination Unit. FMEA is based on monitoring data and also taking into account failure dependencies between components during the assessment of desalination system reliability. Then two systems, one with safety mechanisms and one without are analyzed by Reliability Block Diagrams (RBD) and the reliability of each system is computed. The comparison between a simple system and the remote autonomous system illustrates the implications of the additional monitoring mechanisms and the impact of these mechanisms to reliability and risk assessment on the floating wind powered offshore desalination unit.

Opis:
The analysis and assessment of the protection of technical system was performed using the FMEA method (Failure Mode and Effect Analysis). The FMEA method allows the product or process to be analysed, to identify weak points, and then introduce corrections and new solutions to eliminate sources of undesirable events. The developed methodology was presented on the example.

Opis:
Existing method of performing FMEA for electronic diagrams is time consuming task. For complex systems analysis of every single component failure mode and its effect deeply involves design team and blocks resources availability for long time. Method presented in this paper allows effective analysis of design failure modes using FMEA approach carrying so called Time to Acceptable Analysis (TTAA) constraint.

offshore operational reliability
Opis:
A framework for decision analysis, which has been applied on an operational offshore system and is based on a multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) process, is presented in this paper. This provides a generic methodology for the evaluation of alternatives and implementation of operational and design improvements based on the experience gained from past failures. The Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) method is modified and used as a significant criterion together with Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) in order to enhance the decision making process. The mathematical model of AHP identifies and combines the weight of changes, as well as the results of modified FMEA. This combination takes into account possible interactions among the causes of failure by integrating several elements, enhancing the FMEA method. Next, the paper describes a decision model that incorporates also decision maker’s subjective assessments and is suitably applied to an autonomously operating floating structure. This decision making technique, enables the manipulation of both qualitative assessments and quantitative metrics in order to improve final judgments and, in general, advance the operation of the complex floating system.

Opis:
It is state-of-the-art that a Level 1 PSA also includes a fire PSA for all plant operational states. In performing Fire PSA not only the malfunction of the components has to be assessed but also all supply systems and cables have to be traced for a given component. In the past it was assumed in the case of a fire in a compartment that all components and cables in that compartment are not functional anymore. However, this is in many cases a too conservative approach and could lead to overestimated fire induced core damage frequencies. Therefore, a method is necessary to assess in a more realistic manner the effects of cables failures caused by fire. Such a procedure requires a sound data base on equipment, list of cables and their properties as well as cable routing. Two methods are described which are currently developed. One of them is a cable failure mode and effect analysis which is easier to apply in practice.

Opis:
In the analysis of the operation of critical infrastructure systems it is important to perform the analysis of the safety of the operation. The daily operation of such systems is inherently associated with the occurrence of various types of random undesirable events. Therefore, in the paper the matrix and logical trees methods used in the analysis of the risk of threats in critical infrastructure systems within the Baltic Sea, were presented. The analysis and assessment of the protection of technical system was performed using the FMEA method (Failure Mode and Effect Analysis). As to analyse the cause and effect of undesirable events the method of Bayes' theorem and Java Bayes program were implemented, which allows to identify the probability of the event occurrence.
