Aim: To determine the problems that midwifery and nursing students face in a neonatal care unit. Materials and methods: The study was carried out with 179 third-year students, out of 204 in a Health Sciences Faculty, Department of Midwifery and Nursing, who agreed to participate in this study. The data were collected by using a sociodemographic information form and a questionnaire form. These forms included questions on the feelings that student nurses experienced in a neonatal care for the first time and the reasons behind them. Percentage, mean, median, and chi-square tests were used to evaluate the data. Results: In this study, 88.8% of the participants were female and 45.8% of them had chosen their departments at their own will. Among them, 73.7% were excited and 38.5% were frightened to provide care to a neonate for the first time. In addition, 66.5% of nursing students were afraid of causing harm to the neonate. Moreover, 54.7% of student nurses felt that a neonate was too small to handle. Furthermore, 43.6% of the participants had the fear of dropping the neonate, while 39.7% of them had never given care to a neonate before. A statistically significant number of participants did not feel like touching while giving care to the neonate (p < 0.05). These feelings were reported by following types of participants: male midwifery and student nurses, who had chosen their departments at their own will, and student nurses who were not willing to work in neonatal care units after graduation (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that midwifery and nursing students have difficulties in handling and giving care a neonate for the first time. This is because they got excited and frightened during their neonatal practice.

Nursing Care
Opis:
Purpose: To investigate satisfaction of cancer patients, who have undergone cancer surgery, with nursing care and the association of patient satisfaction with demographic and clinical characteristics. Materials and methods: The study population consisted of 181 patients with cancer who have undergone surgery and were hospitalized in clinics of University General Hospital of Greece. The instrument used in the study was the «Measurement of patient satisfaction scale» (MPSS). The model of multiple linear regression was used with the method of backward stepwise linear regression. Results: The results of the study showed that patients were overall satisfied with nursing care. The areas they were less satisfied were «Resting time», «Information», «Education», «Personal preferences» and «opportunities for participation in care». The patient satisfaction had a statistically significant association with the following characteristics of the patients: (a) patient education, less educated patients showed higher levels of satisfaction (p<0.001) and (b) the hospitalization at the chemotherapy clinic, patients hospitalized at chemotherapy clinic showed higher levels of satisfaction than patients hospitalized in the other two clinics (p=0.002). Also, there was a statistically significant association between the patients education level and the item «I wish nurses have knowledge about alternative methods of dealing with some disease symptoms» (r=-0.22, p=0.003). Conclusions: The training of the nursing staff that work in clinics where patients with cancer are hospitalized, is necessary not only at a scientific level but also at a communication level. The satisfaction of surgical patients with cancer should be continually evaluated in order to assess patients’ needs, to improve poor or problematic aspects of care and to manage patients’ personalized and expressed needs.

Purpose: The study was directed towards examination of nursing students’ attitudes towards environmental problems. Materials and methods: This descriptive study was performed from June to August 2014 with 296 first-fourth year nursing students from one nursing faculty located in Izmir. The data of the study were collected through conducting face-to-face interviews by using Socio-Demographic Characteristics Form and Environmental Problems Attitude Scale. Descriptive statistics, chi-square test, Cronbach alpha, t-test and Mann Whitney U test were used in the data analysis. Results: Mean age of the students was 21.16±2.28 years. The fourth year students had higher scores for their attitudes to environmental problems. Female students, students taking a course about the environment before university, students becoming a member of environmental organizations had significantly higher scores for their attitudes to environmental issues. Conclusions: This study suggests that attitudes of students towards environmental problems can improve only after they are offered an effective education. Therefore, Syllabi should be designed to include environmental problems to increase knowledge and awareness of students and to acquire a positive attitude.

Death
Opis:
Introduction: Dialysis patient had experienced the fear of pain and suffering, loneliness and fear of death. The high mortality rate in these patients indicates that about one-fourth of them are in their last year of life, suggesting the presence of death and dying in the haemodialysis unit. Nephrology nurses play an important role in these patients and their families in dealing with the fear of death and accepting the reality of death. Purpose: To determine the opinions of nephrology nurses about death concept.Materials and methods: This was a descriptive study conducted among nurses. A total of 68 nurses working on the hemodialysis units of public hospitals in Turkey completed the questionnaire. The tool used in the study was the Scale of Thorson-Powell Death Anxiety, the Scale of Death Related Depression and the Scale of Attitude Towards Death and Dying Patient. The results were analyzed statistically and p<0.05 was accepted as statistically significant. Results: Nephrology nurses had a medium-level avoidant attitude towards dying patient and their emotional state was depressive. They experienced medium-level death anxiety, the death related anxiety and depression and avoidant attitude towards the patient were found more in female nurses compared to male nurses. The nurses who worked for 1-10 years have less DRDS scores than nurses who worked for 20 years or above. İn addition nurses had an avoidant attitude towards dying patients as their DRDS and TPDAS scores increased. Conclusions: It can be suggested that nephrology nurses should be given training on how to take care of dying patients, and the continuity of this in-service training should be ensured.
