Opis:
Denticles are pulp degenerations in the form of calcified deposits of mineral salts, usually found in molars and lower incisors, as well as in impacted teeth and deciduous molars. Denticles may come in various sizes, from microscopic particles to larger mass that almost obliterate the pulp chamber and are visible only on X-ray images. Denticles form as a result of chronic inflammatory lesions, but may also be caused by injuries and conservative treatment. They are most frequently found in necrotic foci. Denticles may cause problems for root canal treatment, as their presence might make it difficult to obtain proper access to the pulp chamber bottom and the canal orifices. There is also the increased risk of bending or breaking the endodontic instruments. Sometimes, denticles fill the entire space of the tooth chamber and pushing the pulp to the edges of the chamber. Denticles can cause pain due to the pressure on the nerves and blood vessels supplying the internal tissue of the tooth. The presence of large denticles might eventually lead to necrosis of the pulp. Denticles accompany certain diseases, such as dentin dysplasia, odontodysplasia or Albright hereditary dystrophy.

Opis:
Purpose: To understand the concept of empathy by nurses, get to know the importance of empathy in performance the work of a nurse and to determine the ability of empathy among nurses. Materials and methods: The study group consisted of 100 nurses (females and males) working in hospitals and clinics in Mazovia province. The control group consisted of 100 persons engaged in office work. A diagnostic survey method was used in the research. The research tools were: Davis’ Interpersonal Reactivity Index, Emotional Control Scale and a questionnaire prepared by the team concerning the concept of empathy in the opinion of nurses and presenting their opinion on the importance of empathy in personal contact with the patient. Results: The level of knowledge on empathy among nurses is on the average level. The average score on this scale was 17.35 (SD=3.40). Almost 85% of the respondents claimed that empathy is equal with compassion shown to the other person - the patient. Empathy was often confused with the show of compassion. There are significant differences between the level of empathy of nurses and the control group. The differences relate to the results in the scale of perspective-taking and the scale of empathic concern. Nurses often are able to feel the experience of others, and appear to concern the other (p<0.05). Understanding empathy is associated with more frequent displaying the feeling of anger. This is a positive feature, because those people had a better self-awareness and their experiences, including anger. They could express it on the outside, usually in the socially acceptable way. It was similar with those who were convinced of the positive impact of experiencing emotions during the healing process. Conclusions: Empathy is a positive factor influencing the quality of conducted nursing work. Steps should be taken to introduce workshops of interpersonal skills as a module in the nurses’ training course

Opis:
On the basis of the available literature on the subject, the causes and possible treatment options of irreversible pulpitis are discussed. The justifiability of the available treatment methods is also verified. The advantages and disadvantages of the available pulpitis treatment methods are discussed. The issue of toxicity of materials used in mortal endodontic treatment is highlighted. The causal relationship between endodontic treatment and focal diseases is explored.

Opis:
Introduction: Proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) are a class of drugs which decrease gastric acid production, their overuse is becoming increasingly common. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate medical indications for PPIs in a cohort of prevalent hemodialysis (HD) patients and their awareness about the medical effects of these drugs. Materials and methods: The study was performed in 78 HD patients enrolled in a chronic dialysis program in a single academic dialysis unit. The study was based on medical history obtained from the patients (survey about drugs they take with intention of revealing PPIs, indications for the treatment, their awareness of the mechanism of action of these drugs). Results: 46 patients (59%) took or have been taking PPIs. Almost half (49%; n=22) had no clear medical indications for the drugs. Prescription of PPIs without medical indications was more common among nephrologists (27%), when compared with gastroenterologists (5%; p<0.05). Only 29% (n=13) of patients taking PPIs were aware of the mechanism of action of the drugs. Conclusions: Results of this study reveal the problem of PPI overuse among HD patients. Gastroenterologists usually prescribed PPIs according to medical indications. Lack of patients’ knowledge about the indications for PPI therapy is overwhelming.
