    The present essay aims to contribute to the contemporary debate on what the most appropriate approach for political historiography is. In it, three approaches are outlined as the most influential and widespread today: philosophico-methodological historicism, contextualism, and the paradigmatic approach. The paradigmatic approach is investigated with respect to its nature, contents and heuristic parameters, and the legitimacy of its application is explained. The defining feature of this approach is that it presents the development of political thought as a progressive three-stage dialectical and logical process of “overcoming” the “outdated” and establishing new paradigms. The implementation of the paradigmatic approach in political historiography allows the coming of new political doctrines to be seen as the expression of the requirements set by the existing political paradigm in a given historical period and not as the effect of chance or divine inspiration.

    Opis:
    The subject of this article is the demonstration of the changes that occurred in modern times in the perception of the goal of the state and politics and desirable attitudes of the ruler. The article presents a comparison of the medieval political thought and the thought developed by later political writers: N. Machiavelli, J. Bodin, H. Grotius, and T. Hobbes. The conclusion that follows from the considerations is that, in the Renaissance and Baroque times, the deprivation of the political thought of the sacral themes became evident. What is interesting is that the causes of transformations were at the same time found in the contradictions existing in the Middle Ages. The reception of Aristotelianism, undermining the authority of the papacy and the creation of sovereign states thoroughly and permanently changed the perception of politics and the functioning of the state.
    Przedmiotem artykułu jest ukazanie zmian, jakie nastąpiły w czasach nowożytnych, w postrzeganiu celu państwa, polityki i pożądanych postaw władcy. W pracy przedstawiono porównanie myśli politycznej średniowiecza z tą, która była autorstwem późniejszych pisarzy politycznych: N. Machiavellego, J. Bodina, H. Grotiusa i T. Hobbesa. Nasuwającym się wnioskiem z rozważań jest konstatacja, że w czasach renesansu i baroku uwidoczniło się pozbawienie dotychczasowej myśli politycznej wątków sakralnych. Interesującym zagadnieniem jest to, że przyczyny przeobrażeń tkwiły również w samych sprzecznościach istniejących w średniowieczu. Recepcja arystotelizmu, podkopanie autorytetu papiestwa i powstanie suwerennych państw dogłębnie i trwale zmieniły postrzeganie polityki i funkcjonowania państwa.

    This article analyses the main assumptions of Russian political thinkers of the XVI century. The large body of scholarship that explores themes related to political philosophy, history of ideas, and history of the Tsardom of Russia (in context of political and social change across the sixteen century Russian state) demonstrates the importance of the historical evaluation of changes in political conceptions. There is, however, minimal science investigating the relationship between dominant social values and tsarist autocracy from the basis of then political philosophy. For this reason, the main focus of the text was to highlight the perception by the thinkers of the ideal ruler and his relationship with subjects. This article illuminates previously unexplored connections between conceptions of the ‘Law and Truth’, ‘State and Tsar’ in 16th century Russia. The main subject of research is the works of Andrey Kurbsky, Fedor Karpov and Ivan Peresvetov. Based on the study of written historical sources and historical criticism of sources, a model of their perception of the ideal state was created.
    Celem niniejszego artykułu było ukazanie głównych założeń myśli politycznej XVI-wiecznej Rosji. Przedmiotem analizy stały się materiały publicystyczne, które powstały w tymże wieku. Rozważania zawarte w artykule ujawniają główne koncepcje, autorami których są: Fiodor Karpow, Iwan Pereswietow i Andriej Kurbski.
