Opis:
Storytelling is one of the most common activities used in teaching English proficiency to language students. It is widely accepted as a teaching technique by many educators because it engages students in learning. This study seeks to examine students’ readiness in using technology-aided applications in telling their stories. It also investigates how cybernated storytelling could encourage them to communicate more in groups. This qualitative study involved 35 secondary school students, selected based on purposive sampling technique, from a multi-ethnic secondary school in Malaysia. After having initial exposure to cybernated storytelling video production, the students were divided into small groups and required to engage in developing a cybernated storytelling video for a period of 90 days using the English language. While engaging in the activity, students were expected to communicate orally in face-to-face meetings and in writing using WhatsApp (WA) and Facebook (FB) platforms. Their WA and FB entries were compiled and analysed thematically besides interview responses which were collected during the group interview. The findings point to how technology aided language learning could be a strong support in enhancing students’ English communication skills.

Opis:
This study examines the effect of storytelling through the use of Telegram on oral language of English foreign language (EFL) students. To this end, thirty English students aged 18 to 21 took part in the research. Before the treatment, they were interviewed by two instructors and were graded as low-proficient speakers of English. The selected participants were assigned randomly into two homogeneous groups of control (n=15) and experimental (n=15). The instructor taught four stories to both groups through the online class. The participants of the experimental group were supposed to summarize the retold stories while the participants of the control group answered the comprehension questions of the stories. All the participants were to record their voices and share them in their groups and their peers were supposed to listen to the speaker and post their comments. After the treatment, two instructors interviewed all the participants. The results of the comparison of the first and the second interview confirmed the positive effect of storytelling and answering the questions on the Telegram. The findings of this study may help the learners to enhance their English speaking skills.

Opis:
Societal changes have, throughout history, pushed the long-established boundaries of education across all grade levels. Technology and media merge with education in a continuous complex social process with human consequences and effects. We, teachers, can aspire to understand and interpret this volatile context that is being redesigned at the same time society itself is being reshaped as a result of the technological evolution. The language-learning classroom is not impenetrable to these transformations. Rather, it can perhaps be seen as a playground where teachers and students gather to combine the past and the present in an integrated approach. We draw on the results from a previous study and argue that Digital Storytelling as a Process is capable of aggregating and fostering positive student development in general, as well as enhancing interpersonal relationships and self-knowledge while improving digital literacy. Additionally, we establish a link between the four basic language-learning skills and the Digital Storytelling process and demonstrate how these converge into what can be labeled as an integrated language learning approach.

Opis:
Learning vocabulary is one of the problems faced by English language learners. The inability to use vocabulary poses difficulties to learn the language effectively. One of the ways to attract to and interest learners in learning vocabulary is through the integration of technology, such as the use of digital storytelling as its interactivity can create interest in learning. This study examined the effects of digital storytelling in vocabulary learning among young Malaysian English as a Second Language (ESL) learners. Qualitative case study was employed as the research design of this study. Findings revealed that there were several impacts of digital storytelling on vocabulary learning and all of these effects are positive. Some implications of digital storytelling on education are also discussed in this paper.
