Opis:
The paper is devoted to the first and at the same time the most famous novel by Wacław Gąsiorowski – Huragan (Hurricane, 1901), which began the “Napoleonic Trilogy”. In the introduction, its origins and the history of reception have been presented, followed by: a literary image of the Napoleonic era and the world of heroes, with a particular emphasis on the figure of Joanna Żubrowa – a sergeant in the army of the Duchy of Warsaw, the first woman to be decorated with the Virtuti Militari Order. The patron and master of Gąsiorowski, who often referred to the model of a “cloak and sword novel”, was Henryk Sienkiewicz. However, Huragan, which can be situated between Trylogia and Popioły, also demonstrates Young Poland origins.

Opis:
The purpose of the essay is to introduce the figure of a contemporary Spanish author, Vicente Luis Mora, and his novel Centroeuropa to the Polish literary researchers, as well as to analyze the special character of this novel in terms of reading agreement and the most adequate terminology concerning the literary genre, to which it belongs, based on the form of typological characteristics of a novel that includes ten essential points: paratext, plot, narration, time structure, poetics, the question of mimesis, the loyalty of history towards History, metatextuality, ideological character and the strategies used by the author. On the basis of these reflections it can be concluded that Centroeuropa by Vicente Luis Mora is a metanovel about a man who is looking for his way in a breakthrough moment in the history of Europe, between the 18th and 19th century, in the declining feudal‑absolutist Prussia and the emerging liberal‑capitalist Prussia, in the embryonic society, where economic and political norms haven’t been fully constructed yet and women are not full‑fledged members of society. Centroeuropa is a multi‑dimensional novel inspired by the past of Central Europe, but – above all – a metanovel about writing and its servitude.

Opis:
In this paper, the Ukrainian trilogy by Józef Łobodowski has been interpreted as a historical novel, in which the described events took place in the Kuban region in the period between 1918 and 1922. The history of the Bolshevik revolution and the Civil War in the Caucasus area of Russia has been presented in a vivid story, which was inspired by the author’s personal experiences. The protagonist of the trilogy is the author’s own alter ego. The author’s participation in the discussed events significantly influenced the artistic form of the novel. The work possesses the features of a reportage novel, with its inherent verism, a trend towards a faithful depiction of life during the Russian Civil War, as well as elements of journalism that correspond to the writer’s journalistic activity. The reportage characteristics of the trilogy did not hinder the author from complying in his narration with the pattern of Sienkiewicz’s novel W pustyni i w puszczy (In Desert and Wilderness). In this way, the Ukrainian trilogy became a work with an original structure, in which the author also objectified his own emigrational experiences.

Opis:
A historical novel Złota wolność by Zofia Kossak‑Szczucka, connects the beginning ofthe 17th century with modern times. It was written right after the May Coup and became an argument in political‑ideological polemics. However, it did not lose the character of a proper historical novel, but when it is read against the background of the journalism of those days, it acquires the characteristics of a great comparison of the two eras. The author of the article conducted a comparative analysis of a novel and journalism of a conservative journal „Czas”, in which Zofia Kossak published her novel. Historical politics practiced in the journal by distinguished journalists, references to historical School of Krakow and its generalizations, make it possible to recreate the ideological concept of a novel: respect for the rule of “the strong hand”, opposition to anarchy and the spirit of “rebellion”, reluctance towards “sejmocracy” and “party favouritism”. The author emphasizes the role of great leaders: Stanisław Zółkiewski and Karol Chodkiewicz, as well as an “ideologist” of changes, a Jesuit Piotr Skarga. The choice of this person enhances the meaning of Catholic axiology. As for the two hetmans, one can notice allusive references to Józef Piłsudski. A separate part in the novel is dedicated to the history of the Arian movement, shown at the moment of its disintegration and internal quarrels. Zofia Kossak presents the history of the Arians as an analogy to party fights in the 1920s. The main characters of the novel, i.e. “Christians”– the Pielszów Brothers – are located in the middle of the most important historical events of the era: in the Zebrzydowski’s rebellion and wars – the Livonian War and the Moscow War – under the leadership of both hetmans. Kossak’s novel can be interpreted in a broad context as a historically motivated warning against the disintegration of an independent country, involved in political fights between parties. According to the author, in order to rescue both the past and the present, authority should be strengthened and social reforms ought to be introduced. The shape of rules can be determined by a strong and authoritarian individual, but supported by national, religiously motivated unity.

Opis:
Jan Ziółkowski’s historical novel entitled Kawaler złotej ostrogi (1967), which was preceded by the trilogy Homo novi (1955), is about the events of the first half of the 16th century. By means of historical narration, the author conducts a debate with Sienkiewicz’s vision of the Polish history, created “to comfort the hearts”. This allows the writer to reconcile with the idealized image of the Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth, preserved in social mentality, deconstruct its image and create an alternative to Sienkiewicz’s narration. Difficult, painful, humiliating and embarrassing issues, such as social and national differences, submission (race differentiation, dominance, subordination, inequality, oppressiveness), as well as national vices, come to the fore in the novel. The plot is about the life of three characters: Marek Jakimowski – a Catholic nobleman, Stefan Satanowski – an Arian nobleman, and Jan Stołczyn – a liberated peasant. Each of the characters experiences oppression because of an unjust system based on the principles of “golden freedom”. Ziółkowski used a traditional model of a historical novel, creatively transformed the sources that were accessible to him, and built his own historical reconciliation narrative. This is an example of engaged writing.

Opis:
Zofia Kossak introduced Maryna Mniszchówna as one of the historical characters in her novel Złota wolność. By doing that she took the challenge of facing the tradition of writing about the empress (present for example in Józef Szujski’s dramas). The article includes an analysis of the method in which Kossak turns Maryna into a literary character, using available sources thoroughly, but creating a different, new story. The writer emphasizes the difference by introducing into the novel the character of Jadwiszka Paryshazówna as an alter ego of the empress, personifying all the vices attributed to her in stereotypes. Kossak used her own social experience (including the traditional role of a woman) to show a famous historical figure in a different way, thanks to which she was able to satisfy her female readers, who did not find a fully developed heroine in previous historical novels. Researchers who deal with Kossak’s work have not paid attention to Maryna Mniszech before. In the analyses that investigate the presence of the empress in cultural texts, the novel Złota wolność has been neglected or mentioned briefly. The article fills this gap.

Opis:
The main idea of the article is the description of selected works which belong to the latest Hungarian historical novels. They are surprising for readers and at the same time constitute a polemic with the genre classics. The best‑known historical novelists ate the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in Hungary are: Géza Gárdonyi and Maurycy Jókai. One of the reasons for their popularity is the fact that in their works they mentioned well‑known and at the same time painful events from the history of Hungary. It was the era of Turkish rule and the period of the Hungarian Spring of Nations. Other events included the Trianon case, which wasn’t discussed between 1945–1989, the Second World War, and the Hungarian October. The mythic image of national struggle and the fighting Hungarian, which was shaped by Romantic writers, was preserved for a long time in the collective memory of Hungarians. It seemed to have become an indispensable element of national mythology. However, new authors appeared in contemporary Hungarian culture, who made an attempt at the demythification of events that were important for the Hungarian people. Such an attempt seems very interesting and controversial. It is a litmus test for the current state of the collective historical awareness of the nation. New literary works take a different approach to those events which are well‑known to several generations of Hungarians from classical literature. They ask questions about the borders concerning rooted axiological categories and the flexibility of historical thinking. They are also an attempt at a timeless reflection connecting different periods. In Béla Fehér’s book, which was written in the spirit of magical realism, the most popular leader of the Hungarian Spring of Nations – Lajos Kossuth (1802–1894) – quotes the words of Prime Minister Imre Nagy (1896–1958) from the days of the Hungarian October. As for the works which deal with the topic of the two World Wars, they pose questions about the moral value of struggles run on the wrong side in the interest of foreign powers.

The paper also includes the interpretation of the novel, using the category of culture as an ideology of social groups, bearing in mind the fact that culture, including literature, is a tool of ideological impact on society by means of Althusser’s ideological state apparatuses. It examines the cognitive capabilities of various literary methodologies towards analyzed works. It describes the profile of the author of Przyłbice i kaptury and refers to the ongoing discussion about his works.

The topic of the article is the image of Polish kings and nobility in Roman Iwanyczuk’s historical prose. The analysis was conducted on the basis of three works written at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s. They are only a fragment of the rich literary heritage ofthe famous Ukrainian novelist. Ciemnoczerwone wino (Черлене вино) takes the reader to the 15th century, to Galicia‑Volhynia, which was threatened with polonization. Manuskrypt z ulicy Ruskiej (Манускрипт з вулиці Руської) shows the origin of the idea of the liberation war, the future Chmielnicki Uprising, in Lviv at the turn of the 16th and 18th century. The novel Woda z kamienia (Вода з каменю) presents the beginnings of the Ukrainian national revival in Galicia and the history of the Ruthenian Trinity, with its leader Markian Szaszkewicz. The cyclicality and connections between novels, gives Iwanyczuk’s work spatiotemporal continuity, which encompasses, above all, historical events and figures. The analyzed works present a clearly negative image of the representatives of Polish society, which results from the stereotypical approach to the perception of a Pole in the 20th century Ukrainian literature. Polish rulers and nobility are portrayed through the prism of Polish‑Ukrainian relations at socio‑political, religious and ideological level.

Opis:
The article is a description of an extensive novel by a Galician writer, Maria Pomezańska née Chłędowska, entitled Gertruda Komorowska and published in 1853 in Lviv. The analysis is based on a few issues. Firstly, the sources determining a particular variant of the story of the marriage between Szczęsny Potocki and Gertruda Komorowska and the crime committed against a young woman. Secondly, the way the heroes were created and their mutual emotional and psychological relationships. Thirdly, the motivations that prompted the writer to deal with the topic which was already known and described in literature at that time. The article leads to the conclusion that Pomezańska’s work refers to women’s historical anecdotes of the 18th and 19th centuries, but its goals are essentially feminist, also because the past is used to build a kind of female supplement to official history. Its widely known canvas was filled with the voice of women, overlooked or marginalized by male writers.
