Opis:
The question of the origin of life interested people for centuries. All existing views on this subject can be classified into different areas of our knowledge of the world: natural sciences, philosophy, and theology. Some theories (perhaps the majority) contain more or less explicit elements from all of these areas. Thus, it is helpful to take a closer look at them and to classify all the typical groups of theories about the origins of life. We can in this way stress their mutual connections and clarify their own nature. Nowadays, driving forces of pre-biological chemical evolution and the explanation of the transition from “non-life into life” present a great variety of solutions. The differences between the theories, however, as well as the current controversies in the scientific community (e.g., what was “in the beginning”?; where did prebiotic evolution take place? etc.), will be shown to be of secondary importance in comparison with several much more profound philosophical assumptions underlying the origin-of-life-studies. The attempt to organize and classify different types of theories on the genesis of life allows to take into account different kinds of perspectives (theistic, philosophical and scientific), and to compare them to each other. The most general division between theories is based on a distinction between metaphysical conceptions and scientific ones. Some theories answer the question of the emergence of life in general, whereas others tackle the question of the origin of life on Earth only. Interestingly, two traditional ideas concerning the problem of the origin of life (i.e., spontaneous generation and panspermia) are still at play in contemporary scientific research, albeit in a modified form. In the perspective of contemporary scientific research on the origin of life it seems interesting that two main ideas concerning the problem of the origin of life, spontaneous generation and panspermia, are still present as presuppositions of certain theories but have been modified. Moreover, it is evident that the theistic view of the origin of life (creation) does not have to fall into conflict with contemporary scientific theories. Rather, they are complementary. This article is an extension, explanation and refinement of the proposed scheme of the main types of theories on the origin of life. An attempt to classify various biogenesis theories is also proposed. One of the most important questions that will be addressed concerns the philosophical presumptions of biogenetics still informing current research as well as scientific explanations of the origin of life.

The aim of the article above is an attempt of the natural approach of based categories of bioethics, namely quality of life, the value of human life, and the sanctity of life (the quality of life makes its sanctity). By thorough analysis, in the biological aspect of goodness and evil and by study the emerging of rational and free (human) Being in the evolutional perspective the effort of showing of uniqueness, specificity, and immunity of a human person is undertaken. The analysis tends toward creating a basis for bioethical valuation. Bioethics as interdisciplinary science has to be based on interdisciplinary anthropology taking into account the ontic-existential structure of human beings.

Opis:
The gloss is inspired by the Małgorzata Jankowska’s monography Vitality of the Canon. Semiotics of Modern Apocrypha and aims at presenting the complex relations between life and text – understood not only metaphorically, but also literally. Starting with the Yuri Lotman’s expression ‘the life of the text’ the author focuses on the one of the basic features of the semiosphere, i.e. dynamics and remaining unfinished. Referring to the so-called late Lotman, the author discusses such issues as explosion, unpredictability and motion in the relation to the text. The next part of the paper contains certain remarks on the convergences of Lotmanian and Mikhail Bakhtin’s view on the cultural dynamics and vitality of the text. The issue of the life of the text in the view of hermeneutics is being discussed in the next part of the article. The author refers to Gianni Vattimo’s concept of the transparency and ‘opaqueness’ as its opposite and juxtaposes it with the hermeneutic notion of the understanding which should not be fully performed. Apparently the lack of transparency and being not fully understood is what provides the desirable dynamics of text and culture. As Lotman writes, the text which is fully understood can only be displayed in a museum - it does not have a semiotic life any more. To interpret means to live – a text requires multiple interpretations and contexts to be alive.

The stages of human life and the corresponding physiological changes have been described in many ways since ancient times. Although old age was characterized by physical and mental weakening (senility), it was portrayed as an age of wisdom which contrasted youth dominated by passions. Vincent of Beauvais devoted a few extensive chapters of Speculum naturale to the last stage of life and cited works of Cicero, Aristotle, Horace, Virgil, St. Jerome, St. Ambrose, Avicenna, Isidore of Seville, which gave him a place in the intellectual tradition of his era. According to him, the advantages of old age were moderation in pleasures, lower libido, wisdom, maturity of advice, common sense and reconciliation to death. The negative aspects of senility were diseases, discouragement and drowsiness. The physical weakness of the body affected the stability of mind. Vincent recognized old age as a natural period in human life and characterized it from the philosophical and medical points of view. He chose those pieces of writings which he considered important and representing different aspects of old age. He advised on nutrition, strengthening of the body and mental energy. Vincent emphasized that old age should be considered as fate. Therefore, there is no reason to fall in despair and wallow in hopelessness, but prepare for death through a wise life.

Nowadays more often people are asking about the meaning of life. It is a fundamental question that every human being faces. Man is asking whether life is worth living, what to do to make our life meaningful?A human being, among many needs, has the need for discovering the sense of life, the need comes from the very core of human existence as placed in time and connected with the phenomenon of passing away. Discovering the sense of life leads to the experience of happiness, joy, and to inner life lived much more to the full. Showing the meaning of life and helping to find that meaning are very important functions of religion. Due to it, a man is able to live one’s life, ambitions, goals, joyful moments as well as his or her suffering in the light of deeper understanding. Religion is the one that can often bring the richest and deepest answers to the question of the two meanings: the meaning of life and the world.

The traditional family model is becoming blurred and for this reason it is no longer valid. The family has always been and will be the central category of social life, around which processes, social phenomena or religious norms are cumulated, but the changing conditions of life of families are generating a necessity to monitor the quality of life of families and look at them as a whole and individually.

Public Pro-life Protests in Canadian Case Law Summary The article deals with the legal standards applied in public anti-abortion protests in Canada. On the basis of an examination of Canadian case law, the author argues that the restrictions on pro-life protests are disproportionate with respect to the objective of ensuring safe access to women’s reproductive rights. The Access to Abortion Services Act and court injunctions are preventing pro-lifers from demonstrating in the vicinity of abortion clinics in defence of the right to life of unborn children. The degree to which pro-lifers’ constitutional freedom of speech is being infringed is in breach of the principles of the liberal state. The right to express opposition to abortion is also limited, although to a lesser extent, in other public places, such as street pavements and squares, university campuses and airport terminals. In the author’s view, imprisonment as the penalty for peaceful protest against the Canadian abortion law – for example, Linda Gibbons spent a total of over 10 years in prison for her pro-life activities! – is inherently incompatible with the essence of a “free and democratic society” as defined in Article 1 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Opis:
Although there is a relatively long tradition of research into the mechanisms underlying conflicts (both internal and interpersonal ones), the existential perspective of conflict has not as yet been the subject of extensive psychological studies. From the standpoint of existential psychology, conflict is primarily an expression of an individual’s confrontation with objective existential facts: freedom and the responsibility for oneself that freedom entails, the finitude of human life, existential loneliness and fate in its broadest sense. Although conflict, so defined, is essentially an immanent feature of human existence, it becomes a problem when a strong sense of helplessness and anxiety starts to accompany it, as a person loses their purpose in life and fails to realize their personal values. This research aimed to answer the question of whether there is a relationship between an individual’s behavior in response to (internal and interpersonal) conflict and his/her sense of meaning in life and preferred values. The study covered a group of 153 students aged from 19 to 26 years. Purpose-of-life was measured using the test developed by Crumbaugh and Maholick (1964). The Schwartz Portrait Values questionnaire was used to assess the respondents’ preferences for fundamental values. The behavior of the subjects in response to conflict was examined using linguistic (frequency) analysis of the verbs used in their open-ended answers.

Eucharist
life of unborn
Opis:
Our commitment to defend our pre -born brothers and sisters receives its form and sustenance from the Eucharist as a Sacrament of faith, unity, life, worship, and love. The Eucharist is a Sacrament of faith. The Consecrated Hoste looks no different after the consecration than before. It looks, smells, feels, and tastes like bread. Only one of the five senses gets to the truth. As St. Thomas' „Adoro Te Devote” expresses, „Seeing, touching, tasting are in Thee deceived. What says trusty hearing, that shall be believed?” The ears hear His words, „This is My Body; this is My Blood,” and faith takes us beyond the veil of appearances. The Eucharist is also a Sacrament of Unity. „When I am lifted up from the earth,” the Lord said, „I will draw all people to myself” (Jn. 12:32). He fulfills this promise in the Eucharist, which builds up the Church. The Church is the sign and cause of the unity of the human family. The Eucharist is the Sacrament of Life. „I am the Bread of Life. He who eats this bread will live forever. I will raise Him upon the last day.” (See Jn. 6:47-58). The Eucharistie sacrifice is the very action of Christ by which He destroyed our death and restored our life. Whenever we gather for this sacrifice we are celebrating the victory of life over death, and therefore over abortion. The pro-life movement is not simply working „for” victory; we are working „from” victory. The Eucharist is the Supreme act of Worship of God. Two lessons each person needs to learn are, „1. There is a God. 2. It isn't me.” The Eucharist, as the perfect sacrfice, acknowledges that God is God, and that „it is (His) right to receive the obedience of all creation” (Sacramentary, Preface for Weekdays III). The Eucharist is, finally, The Sacrament of Love. St. John explains, „This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us” (1 Jn. 3:16). Christ teaches, „Greater love than this no one has, than to lay down his life for his friends” ( Jn. 15:13). The best symbol of love is not the heart, but rather the crucifix. Abortion is the exact opposite of love. Love says, „I sacrifice myself for the good of the other person.” Abortion says, „I sacrifice the other person for the good of myself.” In the Eucharist we see the meaning of love and receive the power to live it. The very same words, further more, that the Lord uses to teach us the meaning of love are also used by those who promote abortion:„This is my body.” There four little words are spoken from opposite ends of the universe, with totally opposite results. Christ gives His body away so others might live; abortion supporters cling to their own bodies so others might die. Christ says „This is My Body given up for you; This is My Blood shed for you.” These are the words of sacrifice; these are the words of love. Everyone who wants to fight abortion needs to say the same. We need to exercise the same generosity we ask the mothers to exercise. We need to imitate the mysteries we celebrate. „Do this in memory of me ” applies to all of us in the sense that we are to lovingly suffer with Christ so others may live. We are to be like lightning rods in the midst of this terrible storm of violence and destruction, and say, „Yes, Lord, I am willing to absorb some of this violence and transform it by love into personal suffering, so that others may live.” Indeed, the Eucharist gives the pro-life movement its marching orders. It also provides the source of its energy, which is love. Indeed, if the pro-life movement is not a movement of love, then it is nothing at all. But if it is a movement of love, then nothing will stop it, for „Love is stronger than death, more powerful even than hell” (Song o f Songs 8:6).

Opis:
The article analyzes the phenomenon of work–life balance (WLB) through the lens of StuartShanker’s concept of self-reg. WLB is the individual human ability to accomplish everydaynegotiations between the roles one plays. The key to successful WLB is optimal and smoothself-regulation of stress in accordance with the self-reg method, which this article is anattempt to introduce the readers to. The self-reg method consists in skillfully switchingbetween arousal, when it is needed, and inhibition or regeneration. In this perspective, self-regulation consists of five steps: read and reframe the behavior, recognize the stressors, reduce the stress, reflect (enhance stress awareness), and respond (develop personalstrategies to promote restoration and resilience). Self-regulation ability enables fluidparticipation in all systems, integrated fulfillment of roles, smoothly switching attentionbetween “I” (self-knowledge and the fulfillment of one’s needs) and “we” (acting for thebenefit of the group, family, or humanity). It thus allows not only for reducing stress but alsofor achieving balance and harmony.
