    The article discusses the production of costume jewellery in the first half of the 20th century. During this period, the jewellery made of less expensive materials has undergone a revolution in terms of its function. In the 20th century, the adornments ceased to be only imitations of precious gems and gradually gained their own identity. Promoted by Coco Chanel and, later on, by other French fashion designers, costume jewellery has become an independent genre of body ornament. Due to its lower production costs, designers could experiment with various materials, giving free rein to artistic imagination. Costume jewellery was often designed by artists previously professionally associated with leading jewellery houses offering traditional jewellery. At the same time, the artists who later on worked in well-known jewellery companies, had been collecting their first experiences by designing costume jewellery. The two jewellery worlds constantly influenced each other, provoking themselves to develop. This trend was particularly noticeable in the USA where the production of costume jewellery has been a very important industry since the beginning of the 20th century.

    Opis:
    The hereby text is a short study on the relationship between architecture and jewellery. In the first part, it presents the history of occurrence of architectural forms in jewellery from antiquity to present day in the European culture. The second part delivers the examples of contemporary artefacts, particularly rings with microarchitecture. The analysis of the collected examples proves that architecture – its form, construction and detail − is a motive of decoration willingly used in jewellery design, often of a symbolic meaning related to the household or the temple (wedding rings, ritual rings). Nowadays, especially in the 21st century, microarchitecture in jewellery often emerges with reference to the place of origin, i.e. the famous building being, most frequently, the commemoration of a journey, able to bring back the memory of a visited city. The architectural jewellery, whose meanings and functions are the subject of the hereby study, has undergone many transformations throughout history. Even though it has transitioned from simple to complicated and decorative forms, from precious and rare to cheap and popular objects of mass production presenting the miniature replicas of buildings, the jewellery nearly always symbolises the city. Much less often the jewellery design occurs with reference to the metaphorical meanings of buildings as a representation of permanency (the tower in Alessandro Dari’s jewellery) or marital union (the house and the temple in Jewish rings).

    Zainteresowanie sztuką ludową Podhala wśród polskich artystów i badaczy sięga lat osiemdziesiątych XIX wieku. Wynikało ono z dostrzeżenia artystycznej wartości tworzonych tam dzieł oraz poszukiwań tzw. sztuki narodowej i rodzimej, tak bardzo ważnych dla polskiej kultury i tożsamości. Inspiracje kulturą materialną i artystyczną Podhala przyczyniły się m.in. do wielkiego sukcesu polskiej ekspozycji na Wystawie Sztuki Dekoracyjnej w Paryżu w 1925 roku. Zainteresowanie to nie zmniejszyło się po 1945 r., ale przybrało inne formy. W tym czasie powstawały w Polsce liczne spółdzielnie, których zadaniem było tworzenie przedmiotów codziennego użytku i dzieł sztuki ludowej, zgodnie z lokalną tradycją rękodzielniczą, ikonograficzną, zdobniczą itp. Pewną część produkcji stanowiła tzw. metaloplastyka – sprzączki do pasków, spinki do koszul, zatrzaski do torebek, noże, okucia fajek i in., których forma była inspiracją dla artystów tworzących dzieła biżuterii – bransoletki, broszki, wisiory itp. Asortyment ten uzupełniony został także o inne elementy – wykonywane z blachy, kości bydlęcej, galalitu i drewna broszki, wisiorki i breloki, które były przede wszystkim pamiątkami przywożonymi z tego bardzo popularnego regionu turystycznego.
    The interest in the folk art of the Podhale region among Polish artists and researchers dates back to the 1880s. It resulted from the perception of the artistic value of the works created here, as well as the search for the so-called national and native art, very important for Polish culture and national identity. Inspiration with the material culture of Podhale came from, among others a great effect in the form of the success of Polish art at the Exhibition of Decorative Art in Paris in 1925. This interest did not diminish after 1945, but took other forms. At that time, numerous cooperatives were established in Poland, whose task was to create everyday objects and works of folk art, in line with the local tradition in terms of technology, iconography, ornaments, etc. In Podhale, among many produced works, a certain part was the so-called metalwork – belt buckles, shirt clips, purse fasteners, knives, etc., the shape of which was an inspiration for artists creating bracelets, brooches, pendants, etc. This assortment was supplemented with other items – made of sheet metal, bovine bone, galalite and wood, brooches, pendants, and key rings, which were primarily souvenirs brought from this very popular tourist region.

    Opis:
    W 1884 i 1885 roku Muzeum Techniczno-Przemysłowe w Krakowie kupiło cztery komplety szklanych modeli kamieni jubilerskich. Były to modele najsłynniejszych diamentów, modele szlifów kamieni szlachetnych, modele wagi (masy) kamieni szlachetnych (karaty), modele kolorów i układów krystalograficznych kamieni szlachetnych. Zakup ten był spowodowany zapewne tym, że muzeum prowadziło od 1868 roku bardzo ożywioną działalność edukacyjną i jego rolą było m.in. podnoszenie poziomu wykształcenia tutejszych rzemieślników, przedsiębiorców i handlowców. Zbiór czterech kompletów trafił następnie – po likwidacji Muzeum Techniczno-Przemysłowego w roku 1950 – do kolekcji Muzeum Narodowego w Krakowie. Zachowane w muzeum dokumenty, karty inwentarzowe, nalepki handlowe pozwalają bezsprzecznie stwierdzić, że te wykonane z wielką precyzją komplety modeli kamieni zakupione zostały w sklepie Vaclava Friča w Pradze. Ich twórcą mógł być jeden z dwóch niezwykle utalentowanych szklarzy – Leopold lub Rudolph Blaschka z Drezna, z którymi Frič intensywnie kooperował. Szklarze są znani przede wszystkim jako twórcy modeli zoologicznych i botanicznych, odznaczających się wielką precyzją wykonania. Ich dzieła stanowią obecnie ozdobę wielu kolekcji uniwersyteckich, muzealnych i prywatnych.
    In 1884 and 1885, the Technical and Industrial Museum in Kraków bought four sets of glass models of jewellery stones. They were models of the most famous diamonds, diamond cut models, models of weight of precious stones (carats), models of colors and crystallographic systems of precious stones. The purchase was likely caused by the fact that the Museum conducted educational activity from 1868 and its role was, among others, to raise the level of education of local craftsmen, entrepreneurs and traders.After the liquidation of the Technical and Industrial Museum in 1950, the aforementioned four sets were transferred to the collection of the National Museum in Kraków. Based on the documents, inventory cards and trade stickers preserved in the Museum, it can be indisputably concluded that these sets of stones, made with great precision, were purchased at the Vaclav Frič store in Prague. Their creator could have been one of the two extremely talented glassmakers, Leopold or Rudolph Blaschka of Dresden, with whom Frič cooperated intensively. The two glassmakers are known primarily as creators of zoological and botanical models, characterized by great precision. Their works nowadays adorn many university, museum and private collections.
