Opis:
Man is a relational being. His development, both in the personal and social aspects, assumes a relation to truth. In such communal building the classical concept of truth as the congruence of intellect and the perceived reality is not enough. It is also necessary to refer to the world of persons (subjects of perception), as a person is the place of learning and communicating the truth, and its witness, for only on personal level can truth give rise to obligation. For it to happen, however, there must be an attitude of trust created between persons. The truth perceived by a subject is a partial one. Thus communicating it must assume its limited and incomplete nature. What is more, a subject communicates by means of words and images. And they acquire certain autonomy, eluding the subject. Therefore there is a need of trust which assumes that the subject communicates only a part of the truth, but it is accompanied by a willingness to get to know the whole truth. Truth requires a particular communicational horizon, which is love. Only by love and a willingness to be open to the full truth the learning subjects can get closer to it. The unity of seeking must be based on full trust in a person, and in such a sense trust is a condition of getting to know the Truth which is a Person.

The University is constantly subject to a process of intense transformations. The diversity of social needs and expectations towards university education requires that the academic community analyze its current status, future challenges and consider initiatives that address these challenges. Thus, emphasizing the significance of universitas, as a community of teaching and learning (universitas studiorum et studentium), it is worth investigating how to build this community without losing fundamental values in massive studies. The university fulfills its own purpose when in a specific community that employs scientific creativity and research, it leads a person to development of their versatile spiritual potential of mind, will, heart, and a formation of the whole person.

In this paper, I discuss the interpretation of the method of deconstruction in David J. Gunkel’s Deconstruction (MIT Press 2021). I focus on the relationship between deconstruction and truth. I hold that the concept of truth is indispensable for deconstruction since truth introduces correctness conditions for the deconstructive method. However, I claim that truth, being essential and primitive for deconstruction, is fundamentally inaccessible for being analyzed by the latter.

Human plays a crucial role in the creation of science and the process of its development. The accepted idea of science determines, in turn, the position of humans in nature. Both modernity and contemporaneity suggest certain general concepts of science, as well as substantially and specifically influence the vision of mutual relations between humans and nature. The simple relationship between science and truth, which stemmed from positivism and which justified any form of the exploitation of nature, has been seriously questioned in the new idea of science. Consequently, the scheme, in which nature was treated as an object of unlimited use disappeared. Approaching the truth became a process showing various relationships and connections between humans and nature. Being still a subject in relation to nature, humans appeared one of its definitely determined components.

By way of examining the shift in the development of philosophy as a system-building enterprise to a rhetorical practice, this essay investigates Martin Heidegger’s contribution to communication and rhetorical theory as pertains to the relationship between rhetoric and truth. Traditional correspondence theories of truth, wherein truth is the mere agreement of an assertion to its object, eclipse a more primordial truth, namely that of aletheia or uncovering. As a result, language and our rhetorical practices become but a mere tool for the establishment of correspondence. The essay suggests that Heidegger’s articulation of truth as uncovering offers an accomplished way of understanding possibility, pathos, and shared world-disclosure as they are implicated in both truth and our ethical and rhetorical practices.

For Joseph Ratzinger, Romano Guardini was a valued lecturer and an author of inspiring books. Ratzinger finds attractive Guardini’s ardent quest for truth, the courage to ask big and important questions, boldness to confront the Christian faith with the challenges of contemporary culture, the conviction of the significant cognitive possibilities of human reason, and the emphasis on the primacy of truth in theology. Both authors point to the reasonableness of the Christian faith, based ultimately on the fact that God Himself is Truth. Faith and reason are not mutually exclusive, but they can support each other through solid cognition. Of course, human reason, when trying to know God, struggles with its own limitations in the face of the mystery which exceeds the capacities of the creation.

This article deals with the issue of truth in literature by considering Roman Ingarden’s account. He denies that literary work as a work of art can be true in a logical sense. As a purely intentional object, a literary work of art decides nothing about a transcendent world. The truth in a literary work, however, can be understood as its revelation.

This paper focuses on a Christian philosophy grounded in the experience of truth. To better understand this, it will explore: (1) the kind of philosophical approach that provides a space for people to preoccupy themselves with truth and draws them to further probe into the fundamental questions; (2) a return to the basics: philosophy as love of wisdom and for love of wisdom is personal, an experiential journey; (3) finally, a vision of Christian philosophy that is not purely theoretical but teaches one how to incarnate every truth and virtue. Christian philosophy provides us with an experience in, with, and of the truth in terms of understanding and developing certain traits and virtues such as prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. The shaping and molding of these good habits within each person are important in maintaining a Christian worldview to keep one grounded while being immersed in the world and its realities, allowing the Christian to become a reality within oneself and for others.

Opis:
The title of the article is obviously provocative. The author does not think that truth can indeed work or express itself though violence. And yet, those who refer to timeless, natural truths concerning mankind, life and moral issues are often accused of violence and demagogy. Indeed, connections between truth and violence can be detected, however they concern particular attempts at unprecedented manipulations aimed at the truth. Obedience to the truth requires courage and effort and is not an easy matter. Therefore, today truth about the human condition, moral values or civilian obligations is commonly questioned. Violence can play a substantial role in the processes of creation or cognition; it also influences the transformations of knowledge and its meanings in social circulation as Andrzej Zybertowicz points out in his writings. Nowadays people think that, instead of truth, we should focus on the multitudes of individual narrations and of radically subjective interpretations, of which all are equally genuine. Truth itself is reduced to an arbitrarily determined product of authority – also the one held by mass media. The counterbalance to this kind of thinking is the teaching of John Paul II, who in a calm and balanced way reminds us of the relationship between truth and freedom and about the responsibility that truth generates. It is in fact a precisely ethical matter – which attitude mankind takes in its relationship to the truth and if it is ready to serve it. It is amazing that for many people truth is associated with enslavement. The author makes an attempt at explaining what the causes for this unsettling phenomenon are and also in which way the teachings of Pope John Paul II can help us to see the right perspective of the meaning of truth in the life of each individual, both in the aspect of individual consciousness and a collective experience of a nation or the whole of humanity. The article refers to the views of the Pope, expressed both in the encyclical "Veritatis Splendor" and in the context of other texts by John Paul II.

In this paper I reply to the four critical articles that were provided in response to my book Deconstruction (MIT Press 2021). It proceeds in four steps: (1) I begin with a reply to Stanisław Chankowski’s use of the psychoanalytic term “fetishistic denial” to describe the formal character of the text. (2) I then engage with the criticism supplied by Piotr Kozak, who questions deconstruction’s theory of truth (or its lack thereof). (3) From this, I take-up and respond to Przemysław Nowakowski’s proposal that deconstruction might provide a way to reimagine the interdisciplinarity of cognitive science. And (4) I conclude with a response to Michał Piekarski’s mashup of Ludwig Wittgenstein and Jacques Derrida, which supplies a reading of these two thinkers that is arguably greater than the sum of the parts. The objective of the reply is not to offer a defense of myself or my text but to engage with these interesting and insightful reviews in a way that opens the space for productive dialogue.

When creators were closer to the present day, they tried to separate liberty from metaphysics and morality with reference to the ideals of democracy. However, they confused the cult of equality with the liberty to show that the truth always must be at liberty’s service. But the liberty should be understood like a competence to realize person’s rights. Not till then, liberalism will conceal the historic and present–time demons.

Opis:
This article is an attempt to present one of the vital features of modernculture, namely indifference to truth. In the context of proclaiming the expression “post-truth” the Word of the Year 2016, the author shows how thismodern indifference should be understood. It is explained by recalling theessay of Harry G. Frankfurt entitled On Bullshit. This short text presentsa certain characteristic trait of modern times, that is, a certain attitudeto truth typical of the contemporary man. What is interesting is that it isconvergent with the meaning of the very expression that has recently madesuch a spectacular career and became the Word of the Year.In the first part of the article the author presents the history of the term“post-truth”, its basic meaning and the context in which it was created andis now used. The term “bullshit” is then treated in a similar way. In the thirdpart of the article the main thoughts of Frankfurt’s essay are referred to. It ispointed out that this short essay, written already in the 1980s, proves to bestill valid up until today. For in his essay Frankfurt does not describe anypolitical reality, social or medial one, saturated with dishonesty, disinformation, lies and manipulation. He does not attempt to present various types of examples of “bullshit”. Instead, as befits a philosopher, he goes deeper and attempts to reach the essence of this phenomenon. In this way he draws an unusually accurate image of the modern man for whom truth has lost its significance, for whom there has grown between truth and lies – contrary to any logic – a whole sphere of bullshit, or otherwise post-truth. In the fourth part of the article the author points out the sources of such a situation. He talks about the rejection of the realistic, classical way of understanding truth and, in relation to it, about turning away from reality, that is from facts. In the last part the author explains that in modern times in place ofreality (as an important point of reference) the criterion of coherence anddemocratic consensus has been introduced, or – what fits well into theculture of “bullshit” – the criterion of practicality and usefulness. Insteadof thinking in terms of objective order, it is therefore proposed that oneshould think and act in terms of subjectively perceived advantages. At thispoint the author refers to Richard Rorty’s philosophical conception andshows that Rorty’s end of philosophy, the abandonment of the search forthe ultimate foundations of cognition, for the discovery of truth, for thedominant idea of „contingency” and usefulness, and his „language games”are all excellent illustrations of what a man of the era of post-truth, the eraof indifference to truth, nourishes.

The article poses a study on pedagogical, philosophical and journalistic papers and books by Professor Wojciech Chudy (d. 2007), the Polish personalist affiliated with the Catholic University of Lublin. From his works author retrieved the most significant values, which this outstanding philosopher and educator had referred to the as educational process. The “axiological triad” consists of truth, dignity and freedom crystallized – as “axiological salt” – especially in the experience of hardship and dying, whereas the transmission of the ‘triad’ takes place mainly by the witness of a teacher’s life.
