Opis:
During 2013, the University of Cambridge Museums (UCM) introduced an innovative research internship initiative aimed at early career academic researchers. The Connecting with Collections (CwC) scheme offered six interns from British universities the opportunity to gain hands-on museum experience, while working independently on individual research projects within the collections of the UCM consortium. This paper presents: 1. An Overview of Connecting with Connections Scheme: programme rationale, aims and funding, recruitment and project choice. 2. Training and Opportunities: group training sessions, as well as snapshots of individual experiences within the museums and 3. Internship Outputs: including an end-of-internship Symposium and other outcomes for interns. It briefly surveys the six internship projects before drawing some conclusions about the CwC programme and highlighting some of the debates around the future direction of the internship scheme for UCM.

Opis:
The paper discusses the preparation of an exhibition devoted to paediatric surgery at the Medical University. It is relatively young medical specialisation, practiced by a rather limited group of medical professionals. The knowledge on this subject is also limited, even among health care specialists. The paper provides the most important information on paediatric surgery and attempts at identifying target visitor groups and issues which may be of interest for them. The various expectations and areas of particular interest have been indicated, depending on age, education and reasons for visiting the museum. The paper is an introduction to further discussion on the development and on how to display of the collection at the museum of the Medical University.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to introduce the activities of museums and collections located in the structure of Polish higher education institutions. The analysis is based on concrete examples of academic units operating today. The authors distinguish several categories of museums according to their location, among them university and departmental museums. The second criterion is the organisational formula, in which the authors indicate, apart from museums, also centres and history interpretation units. Using archaeological, medical and natural history collections as examples, they describe similarities and differences in the way they work with resources. The article is also an attempt to start a discourse aimed at drawing attention to the potential lying in such units, the mission and duty of which is to preserve, secure, develop and make available for scientific and didactic purposes the heritage of the university and the history of science. The authors also refer to the legal situation of the university museum units and regulations, which the organisers may use when creating and conducting activities related to the collection and processing of tangible and intangible academic heritage, which is part of the world’s scientific heritage.

Opis:
The State Zoological Museum, established in 1928, inherited and developed the legacy of the Zoological Cabinet of the University of Warsaw (existing since 1818). The Cabinet’s collection had been gathered for decades and belonged to eminent personages not only in Poland but also in Europe. The Museum and its collections were threatened many times: first by a great fire in 1935, then by the German attack on Warsaw in 1939 and subsequent occupation, as well as by the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising and the destruction of the city. After the post-war reconstruction of the Museum, it was time to function in a new political reality, in which the most significant change for this institution was the establishment of the Polish Academy of Sciences. A planned inclusion of the State Zoological Museum in the structures of the newly-founded Polish Academy of Sciences meant that the scientists had to face a dilemma: in exchange for research funds and career development opportunities, they were expected to show favour to the communists and readiness to implement the idea of socialism. In the background of this process, numerous scientific conferences took place, where controversial visions of the future of biological sciences clashed. This process resulted in the transformation of the State Zoological Museum into the Institute of Zoology of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Opis:
During the Second World War, the State Zoological Museum in Warsaw (PMZ) suffered severe losses. Many workers were killed, and parts of the zoological and book collections were stolen by the Germans as early as 1939. The Museum became an important centre of the resistance movement, as it became a storage for weapons, explosives, and chemicals used for sabotage. Despite the repressions, the Museum employees tried to continue their work under the occupation and developed a modern model for the functioning of this institution to be implemented after the war. In the archives of the Museum and Institute of Zoology, a folder was found containing the documentation of the surveys conducted in 1941-1942 on the organisation of work and the future structure of the PMZ. This article presents the first analysis of these documents, which turned out to be a valuable source of information on the functioning of scientific institutions during the occupation, as well as on the history of the PMZ itself.
