Opis:
The article attempts to summarize more than two decades of the development of local commercial television in Poland. The initial spontaneous flowering of local earth station during the ‘piracy period’ (1990–1994), when 19 stations operated (including 12 within the network Polonia 1) was hampered by the regulator (KRRiT – the National Broadcasting Council) after the first licensing process (1994) when Polonia 1 was eliminated and 12 licences were granted. After two decades of changes, the market of ground stations consolidated (especially stations operating in western Poland known as TV Oder). Today there are only four broadcasters (however, TV Odra broadcasts in fi ve regional variants), the programs of local interest take only about 2 hours per day, and the remaining air time is used for retransmissions of programs of nationwide stations – TV4 or TVN. The future of the station after switch off (July 2013) is unclear, because none of these stations has a licence for digital broadcasting. Of the three competing satellite stations in 2008–2010 only one survived (Silesian TVS), but at the cost of reducing regional materials in favour of the universal content, especially entertainment. There are few examples of successful local programs in their own cable television (one of the glorious exception is Poznań WTK). The so-called local Internet TV is only the beginning of real television: such stations produce video content occasionally or once a week (which is short). However, in view of popularising the offer of twenty nationwide channels within the framework of digital terrestrial television in the near future (and plans to transform the public channel TVP Info into the one detached from its regional roots) the Internet will probably be the only enclave to continue the activities of local commercial television.

Opis:
In the Netherlands a two-hour spiritual television show called Astro TV is broadcast daily on a commercial channel. I analyse the power and gender relations in and underlying this programme on the basis of my anthropological observations with reference to the theories of Bourdieu, Wood, Woodhead and others. In the show clients can call in and have a short consultation with a “spiritual specialist”, usually a psychic. On the surface such shows are very much like the presentations that psychics held at paranormal fairs in the 1990s. Both in the television show and in real consultations the psychics do dominate somewhat because of their claim to channel special signs or messages from “beyond” – they act like magicians. However, clients can reject the message or debate its meaning. Backstage a large and obscure pool of psychics, alternative healers and counsellors, publishers and businesspeople use divination programmes and other mass media presentations to supply a large public with holistic spirituality. On this second level real power is exerted more or less anonymously and commercially. Nevertheless, the divination practice appears to offer psychological support to the mainly working-class women who participate in it. Besides, both clients and psychics enjoy such practices, for instance as entertainment. Although religious symbolism is frequently used in such divinations, they should not be seen as a form of religion (because they lack worship), but as secular spirituality.

Opis:
We live in very strange times. Dynamic changes are taking place in front of our eyes. Every day, new, innovative devices, programs and software are created. The world has sped up and people have to adapt to it in the best way possible. Being able to filter so much information is not easy for adults, and even harder for children that are just learning everything. Therefore, it is worth asking yourself whether everything that the world gives us is good, and if not, can we see it? If so, can we protect children from the negative effects of new media and modern technology and teach them to use wisely the benefits of today? The article describes the media, their importance in the modern world and their split. Social media, which are currently considered one of the greatest achievements of mankind, as well as the Internet, where its functions, advantages, but also the dangers it brings are presented in more detailed way. Television, which plays an important role in family life, is also described in this work. The next chapter presents the results of the own research. During the interviews, the students answered questions about what electronic devices they use most often, what websites they use most often, what time they spend in front of the screen/on the Internet and if they know the dangers of using the Internet. In addition, during the study, students’ knowledge of the advantages of using the Internet was tested, why they use internet and how people using internet are controlled. The conclusions of this study are varied. What is the most importantly, we still don’t know exactly how to keep children protected from modern media. Among parents and teachers there is a lot of missing knowledge. It is important to educate teachers, parents but as well children about that. All this can help us to ensure that young people, as well as adults, will only the benefits from what the modern world offer them.
