Opis:
During the years immediately after Poland regained its independence in 1918 the country could boast few literary periodicals. One of them was Wiadomości Literackie (Literary News), which appeared for the first time on 6th January 1924 in Warsaw. Wiadomości Literackie serialized several translations of Conrad’s work, including: “Dusza przeciwnika” (“The Character of the Foe” [collected in The Mirror of the Sea]), “Conrad w Krakowie w r. 1914” (“First News”) and “Książę Roman” (“Prince Roman”). The present article focuses on one translation of “The Character of the Foe” by Józef Brodzki. It explores the strategies used by the translator to domesticate Conrad’s text. These comprised explication, addition, substitution and omission – none of which, however, should be perceived as a limitation. On the contrary, these modifications served the purpose of introducing Conrad’s maritime fiction to the Polish reading public and were a necessary procedure during the early stages of his reception in Poland. They are in line with the Retranslation Hypothesis formulated by Antoine Berman. On the whole, Brodzki’s translation is very effective and conveys the major features of Conrad’s prose by using simpler sentences, paraphrases and neutral language.

The research has covered the major evening news ("Wydarzenia" Polsat, "Fakty" TVN, "Panorama" TVP2, "Wiadomości" TVP1,  "Informacje" TV Trwam) on the day preceding the event, then on the day when the event occurred place, and on the day after the event (28-30 September 2012), and live coverage of the event, presented in the news TV programs. The material was analyzed in six established categories: truthfulness, diligence, morality, reason of state, discrimination, and quality. In the analysis of the live coverage the researchers has used six quantitative operational criteria: (1) the number of pro et contra statements, (2) the number of affiliated and anonymous statements, (3) the diversity of contesting statements, (4) pro et contra affiliations of experts, (5) the sum of statements, (6) the number of reporters involved in the coverage. Qualitative analysis of individual evening news has included an examination of the interpretative frames used to explain the events from the point of view of various interest groups involved. This article presents the detailed methodology of the survey and its part dedicated to live coverage. The second part of the study, concerning only the evening news, will be presented in the next issue of "Zeszyty Prasoznawcze". Both texts should be considered complementary – for this reason, the discussion will be placed in the second text.

The Jewish question
Opis:
Being one of the leading cultural and literary periodicals, Wiadomości Literackie [“Literary News”] played an important role in shaping the literary tastes of members of the Polish intelligentsia, and was a peculiar institution in literary life itself. The primary goal assumed by the journal was to elevate the level of Polish culture and literature and to present the most recent phenomena of European culture to its readers. Starting from the first issue published on January 6, 1924, the weekly declared war on any phenomena that its editors considered parochial. It would have certain, significant consequences in the future, especially in relation to the Jewish issues presented by the periodical. The publisher’s brochure announcing the first issue of the periodical was published in December 1923, and contained an outline of Wiadomości Literackie. The weekly was addressed to a wide readership, which was meant to trigger free discussion on matters of Polish literary life, lead to its growth and stimulate the newborn movements in art. The periodical was meant to present reliable information and objective evaluation of various phenomena.
