“Traditional” or “Modern”? Methodological Dilemmas of the Contemporary Researchers of Old Polish Literature. Part Two: Queer Theory and Gay and Lesbian StudiesThe second part of the paper deals with the problems of the history of homosexuality and other non-normative sexualities in the framework of the Old Polish writings. It has been based on the practical experience and dilemmas of the authors who have recently published a book Homoseksualność staropolska. Przyczynek do badań (Old Polish Homosexuality. A Contribution, 2012). Numerous controversies, such as the application of queer theory versus gay and lesbian studies approach, have been discussed taking into consideration their methodological usefulness with regard to the historical Old Polish texts. Preference has been given to traditional gay and lesbian studies, not queer criticism, as the later may lead to numerous misunderstandings and misinterpretations owing to the indefinite, secondary, doubtful and oppressive character of most available original texts in question, which has been fully exemplified.

The paper examines genre strategies in a number of children’s books by the well-known Swedish author, Astrid Lindgren. Drawing on the reception theories of Hans Robert Jauss, Aidan Chambers and Reinbert Tabbert, the paper demonstrates that the stormy reception of Pippi Longstocking (1945), prompted by a review by Professor John Landquist, had principally genre-related grounds. The book made readers feel a sense of provocation because it challenged their archetextual horizon of expectations by evoking certain traditional genres and simultaneously twisting them in almost anarchic ways. In later books Astrid Lindgren makes a more elaborate use of classic genre structures. She generally chooses one well-known archetext as the generic dominant and allows it to interact with a set of other genres, thus calling forth the main aesthetic effect of the book from the archetextual dialogue between the dominant and the accompanying genres. The paper specifically investigates this polyphonic method in three of Lindgren’s most popular books. In All about the Bullerby children (1947–52) the generic dominant is idyll and the subordinated archetexts satire, parody, burlesque, farce, fairy tale and ballad. Mio, my son (1954) can be considered as an artistic fairy tale (Kunstmärchen), this dominant genre correlating with some other interwoven archetexts: apocryphal gospel, myth, legend, heroic tale and idyll. Finally, the generic dominant of Ronia, the robber’s daughter (1981) – a novel about the adventures of a band of robbers (Räuberroman) – finds its archetextual counterparts in folktale, popular legend, myth, burlesque, fantasy and Bildungsroman, among others.

Non-stability of comparative literature The paper focuses on the history and current situation of the discipline of comparative literature, particularly on the condition of comparative studies in literature and comparative cultural studies. A general discussion on comparative literature as ‘indiscipline’ (David Ferris’s concept), based on negative definitions (e.g. Hugo von Meltzl), limitations of comparison and comparability (Paul van Tieghem, René Etiemble, Gayatri Ch. Spivak, Jonathan Culler, Kenneth Reinhard), and individual projects (George Steiner, Daniel-Henri Pageaux, Armando Gnisci, Gayatri Ch. Spivak, Emily Apter, Susan Bassnett), leads to the conclusion that the ‘non-stability’ has been a crucial problem for comparative literature in the course of the last two centuries. Three metaphors are used to describe comparative literature: the Eiffel Tower (the idea of modernity), the World Trade Center (comparative literature as translatio) and the Tower of Babel (translation). In this context, the author argues that modern comparative studies can be defined not as a rigorous intellectual discipline, but rather as a discipline in statu nascendi, as a practice of reading and interpretation

The return of life-writing genres, biographical writing in particular, to the heart of present-day literary practices remains one of the most interesting phenomena in contemporary literature written in English. The article discusses a number of narratives (written by biographers, literary critics and novelists) which have emerged in the last decades and which attempt to present and critically analyse the life of Henry James, the master of American fiction at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The author recapitulates on the major trends in contemporary biographical practices which address the life of Henry James – especially the conclusions reached by biographers and critics associated with Marxism, Deconstruction, Feminism and Queer Theory. Moreover, the article investigates the phenomenon of the nearly simultaneous arrival of several biographical novels about Henry James.

This article consists of two parts. The first part presents the main concepts and facts connected with the development of postcolonial studies as a relatively new academic discipline, while the second part discusses Conrad’s two ‘African’ works, which - containing as they do an implicit critique of colonialism and imperialism - are now seen as being one of the very first ‘postcolonial’ books. Over the last thirty years, postcolonial studies have not only gained the status of an academic discipline, but have become one of the main schools of literary criticism. The postcolonial approach is also critical towards those systems of presenting the world that have existed for decades and have thus come to be regarded as being natural; it undermines their position and shows that they are nothing but ideological discourses which have been created by world empires. To a great extent, postcolonial theory has relied on existing theories for its methodology and terminology. On the one hand it relies on Marxism, while on the other it leans towards poststructuralism and postmodernism. Postcolonial theory also participates in discussions concerning the position of the Other (Spivak). As well as outlining the framework of postcolonial theory, it is important that we define such terms as ‘colonial’ and ‘postcolonial’ literature. In her book entitled Colonial and Postcolonial Fiction (1995), Elleke Boehmer suggests limiting the field of research in order to concentrate on the modern colonial empires that have emerged over the last four or five centuries, laying particular emphasis on the British Empire, as it was here that the greatest textualization of the idea of colonial expansion took place. The terms ‘colonial’ and ‘post-colonial’ are understood differently in The Empire Writes Back (1989), whose authors (Bill Ashcroft, Gareth Griffiths and Helen Tiffin) suggest that the the term ‘post-colonial’ should refer to all cultures affected by imperial expansion - from the beginnings of colonization to the present day - arguing that the expansion of colonial empires in previous centuries exerted a considerable influence on historical processes that have lasted down to our own times. Because these definitions of post(-)colonial literature do not encompass such phenomena as the literatures of multicultural metropolies or literatures going beyond the realm of the English language or beyond the literature of British or French colonialism, critics now often prefer to use expressions such as ‘literature in English’, ‘French-language literature’ or ‘literature of the Caribbean’ (which indicate the language or the region where a given type of literature has emerged) instead of the term ‘postcolonial literature’. Most contemporary scholars see Conrad as being one of the first postcolonial writers - someone who criticized the ruthless colonial expansion of European empires and the concept of the “White Man’s Burden”. The works which attract particular attention are, of course, those which relate to Conrad’s African experience: An Outpost of Progress and the excellent, albeit overexploited novella Heart of Darkness, which - despite its having been mentioned and referred to so many times by postcolonial critics - still evokes a great deal of controversy. In 1975 the Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe famously declared Joseph Conrad to be “a bloody racist”. Since the publication of Achebe’s An image of Africa many scholars have defended the position of Conrad as one of the chief opponents of colonialism, stressing the fictitious nature of Heart of Darkness, its experimental narration and its metaphorical and symbolic character. This controversy has by no means been laid to rest.

The article provides a brief comparative study of the reception history of Shakespeare’s Caliban in the early modern period and in the contemporary literary criticism. The analysis aims to delineate a fundamental difference in the reception of the character of Caliban throughout the ages which I attribute to a historical shift in the understanding of the notions of humanity and monstrosity. The first part of the article concentrates on the description of the historical and social circumstances of the Elizabethan discourse of monstrosity and draws a link between them and the literary and political context of the time, while engaging into a close reading of The Tempest that brings to the fore the origin and nature of the “servant-monster”. The second part of the paper focuses on the gradual change in the interpretations of Caliban who ceased to be seen as a monstrosity and with time acquired undeniably human characteristics. That shift has been observable since the 19th century and has found its culmination in the postcolonial strain of Caliban’s contemporary interpretations, in which Prospero’s slave becomes a native trying to find a language for himself in a colonial regime his body and mind are subjugated to. The postcolonial project of the unfinished monstrous humanity of Sycorax’s son is congruous with the postmodern condition that can be dubbed, to use Harold Bloom’s phrase, “the Age of Caliban”. It is exactly that liminal and paradoxical notion of monstrous humanity that resides at the core of the contemporary fascination with “Monsieur Monster”.

Between literary and cultural comparative studies The article constitutes an attempt to present in a synthetic way the main assumptions behind the fundamental trends in the comparative studies of the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as their evolution. Following the predominance of the influential model which had developed since the middle of the 19th century and focused chiefly on the genetic research of literary affiliations, and which had assumed the existence of a national literature as an organic entity, since the sixties of the 20th century, there arises a new perspective in comparative studies, where the fundamental role is played by thematic and structural categories (motif, concept, topic, genre, current etc.). The nineties of the 20th century bring yet another attempt to reformulate the methods of comparative studies and to abandon focusing on literary studies, in favor of cultural research in comparative studies, where the fundamental role is played, among others, by issues such as the concept of power, gender, race and also review and multi-, inter- and transculturalism

Niniejszy artykuł jest próbą opowieści o historii przekładów literatury polskiej w Brazylii od lat dziewięćdziesiątych ubiegłego wieku po moment obecny. Zaprezentowano w nim szczegółowo dokonania translatorskie najważniejszych tłumaczy literatury polskiej na brazylijski portugalski, między innymi Henryka Siewierskiego, Tomasza Barcińskiego, Marcelo Paivy de Souzy, Reginy Przybycień, Piotra Kilanowskiego i Eneidy Favre. Starano się również ukazać powiązania między działalnością przekładową a badaniami naukowymi tych z tłumaczy, którzy zawodowo zajmują się badaniem literatury polskiej. Jednocześnie artykuł próbuje unaocznić ważną rolę polonistyki parańskiej i Polonii w popularyzowaniu literatury polskiej w Brazylii. Słowa kluczowe: tłumaczenia literatury polskiej w Brazylii, recepcja literatury polskiej w Brazylii, translatologia, polonistyka w Brazylii.
This paper is an attempt to narrate the history of translation of Polish literature in Brazil from the 1990s until today. It gives a detailed account of the translational achievements of the preeminent translators of Polish literature into Brazilian Portuguese, among them: Henryk Siewierski, Tomasz Barciński, Marcelo Paiva de Souza, Regina Przybycień, Piotr Kilanowski, and Eneida Favre. It also traces the interrelations between translational activities and scholarly research of the translators who are also academics working in the field of Polish literature. At the same time, the article attempts to highlight the importance of Polish studies in Paraná and of the Polish diaspora in popularizing Polish literature in Brazil.

Artykuł podejmuje kwestię różnic w sposobach rozumienia i interpretowania problematyki „literatura a religia” w humanistyce. Przedmiotem uwagi jest literaturoznawstwo polskie i bułgarskie jako zupełnie odmienne pod względem uwarunkowań społeczno-kulturowych, politycznych i wyznaniowych. Analiza prowadzona jest w perspektywie postsekularnej i służy wskazaniu na możliwe kryptoteologiczne ramy dla założeń i praktyk typowych dla polskiego i bułgarskiego pola naukowego. Celem jest naświetlenie kontekstów kulturowych, warunkujących lokalne specyfiki, a także wskazanie na możliwości wykorzystania tychże na potrzeby ożywczego samozdystansowania dyscyplin(y).
The article addresses the differences in the ways in which the research issue of “literaturę and religion” is understood and interpreted in the humanities. The focus of attention is on Polish and Bulgarian literary studies as two cases which are very different in terms of socio-cultural, political and religious conditions. The analysis is conducted from a postsecular perspective and serves to indicate a possible crypto-theological framework for assumptions and practices typical of the Polish and Bulgarian scholarly fields. The aim of the article is to comment on the cultural contexts that condition local specificities, and to show the possibilities of using those for the purposes of self-distancing and invigorating of the discipline(s).

Artykuł interpretuje twórczość Agnieszki Osieckiej w kontekście estetyki komizmu i teorii feministycznej. Analizie zostały poddane utwory Damą być, Nie ma jak pompa oraz Sztuczny miód. Autor rozpoznaje je jako piosenki mające charakter emancypacyjny. Wprowadza do tekstu narzędzia badawcze skonstruowane przez Bohdana Dziemidoka, łącząc je z tezami wypracowanymi przez Henriego Bergsona, a skoncentrowanymi na wspólnotowym wymiarze śmiechu. Wśród teoretyczek feministycznych szczególnie inspirująca okazała się Hélène Cixous. Z ich pomocą scharakteryzowano techniki użyte podczas budowania tekstu przez poetkę, które wspierają emancypacyjne dążenia kobiet walczących o swoją decyzyjność i niezależność w dobie PRL-u. Uzupełnieniem wywodu jest interpretacja wykonań piosenek Osieckiej i sięgnięcie do teorii z zakresu song studies.
The article interprets the oeuvre of Agnieszka Osiecka in the context of communist aesthetics and the feminist theory. Analyzed were the songs Damą być (To Be a Lady), Nie ma jak pompa (There Is Nothing Like Splendour) oraz Sztuczny miód (Artificial Honey). The author recognises them as songs of emancipatory character. Research tools constructed by Bohdan Dziemidok were introduced and combined with the theses developed by Henri Bergson, while being focused on the communal dimension of laughter. Amongst all the feminist theoreticians, Hélène Cixous proved to be most inspiring. With their help the constructing methods used by the poet that support the emancipatory efforts of women fighting for their decision-making rights and independence during communist times were characterised. The analysis is supplemented by interpreting the performances of Osiecka’s songs as well as alluding to the theory from the area of song studies.
