Danger of Social Exclusion among Secondary School Students from the Lublin VoivodeshipTh e author presents the results of the survey conducted among nearly 900 secondaryschool students in the spring of 2011. Respondents were randomly selected fromschools located in the Lublin voivodeship. Th e diagnosis of threat of social exclusionhas been made using original questionnaire. To assess the range of danger of socialexclusion, there were used the shares of respondents characterized by values of individualindicators that point to the unfavorable situation in each of the dimensions(structural, fi nancial, social, emotional, educational). Moreover, author checked theintensity of danger (shaped by the coexistence of positive values of exclusion indicators)and explored whether gender and type of residence are important determinants.Analysis of the collected data showed that in some areas of social exclusion,there are threats to life chances of young people.

Emotional Autonomy, Understanding and Experiencing Closeness during AdolescenceThe article presents the results of research on the development of emotional autonomy and on understanding and experiencing closeness during adolescence. The research was based on theories concerning processes of individuation (Blos) and works on closeness defined as “inclusion of other in the self” (Kelley). In the course of the study two scales: Emotional Autonomy Scale (EAS) and Inclusion of Other in the Self Scale (IOS) were used. The results allow to formulate three general conclusions: (1) emotional autonomy increases with age; (2) some aspects of emotional autonomy seem to be “change-proof” (e.g. perceiving parents as people); (3) understanding and experiencing closeness don’t seem to correspond with age. Two scales used in the research are recommended as valuable measurements. It refers especially to IOS, which is simple in use and allows making comparisons across different populations and situations.

This paper presents some findings of a crosscultural research project on everyday family interactions with teenagers in Estonia, Finland, and Sweden – North European cultures that have all been traditionally characterized as relatively silent and reserved in comparison with other European nations. The three monocultural groups consisted of 17 Estonian, 19 Swedish, and 18 Finnish families living in their country of origin; the two bicultural and bilingual groups consisted of 18 Estonian and 18 Finnish families residing in Sweden. The results revealed that little talk characterizes all Estonian and Finnish families, whereas the Swedish mothers living in Sweden talked a lot. The Estonian mothers living in Estonia tended to be more concerned with controlling their children’s behavior, and elicited conversation from teenagers more frequently. At the same time, the Swedish mono-cultural teenagers were more talkative and more active in controlling their mothers’ behavior than their counterparts, exhibiting a higher degree of symmetrical mother-child interaction than their Estonian and Finnish counterparts. Finally, the discussion focuses on possible reasons and consequences of cultural variability in teenagers’ and their mothers’ conversational style.

The relationship with parents and identity styles in early and mid-adolescence.The resolution of identity crisis is the main developmental task for adolescents. Identity is formed in social contexts. Family is the of the earliest and most important social groups in the development of a child. There are several theoretical perspectives on the links between parent-adolescent relations and identity. They suggest that warm, close family relationship characterised by control and acceptance of adolescents’ autonomy promotes exploration of identity alternatives. The main purpose of the present study was to describe the connection between adolescents’ relationship with their parents and their identity styles. The 469 adolescents (145 from colleges, 324 from high schools) participated in this study. They completed the Identity Style Inventory ISI (M. Berzonsky) and Parents-Adolescents Relations Inventory (E. Gurba). Positive links between good relations with parents, low number of confl icts and normative and informational style of early and mid-adolescents’ identity were found. The high frequency and number of conflicts between mother and mid-adolescents were connected with diffuse-avoidant style of identity. The adolescents’ identity styles were more often correlated with the characteristics of relations with their mother than with their father.

The study focused on social support role as a protective factor (against depression) in 12–17 years old adolescents’ life. Strategies of coping with stress were also studied. It was found that the adolescents’ social network consisted of many subjects, mainly mothers, fathers, friends, siblings and important adults. Sources of social support changed with adolescents’ age and gender. Satisfaction with received help buffered the depression in adolescents though the relation was weak. Strategies of coping: reformulation, worry, ignore the problem, hard work and achieve, social action and concentrate on leisure activities were predicting the depression in adolescents. Further studies should focus on the relation between the type of support provided to adolescents and depression.

In recent years, the situation of child and adolescent psychiatry in Poland has dramatically deteriorated. 24-hour psychiatric wards dedicated to minors are overcrowded and it is almost exclusively patients who are a direct threat to their own health or life that are hospitalised. About 20% of children and adolescents have symptoms of various mental disorders, of which 10% (about 400,000) require specialist care. Depression is one of the most common health problems among children and adolescents and its prevalence increases with age and puberty. Depression can be chronic, with constant severity, or recurrent, when symptoms return in the form of mild, moderate or severe episodes. The mood disorders occurring in the developmental period carry many negative consequences in the emotional, social and educational functioning of the patient. They increase the risk of self-destructive behaviours, suicide, abuse of psychoactive substances, as well as later difficulties in many areas of life during adulthood.

Only recently the development and positive changes after trauma experiences, especially in children and adolescents, have become a subject of research, although the trauma itself and its negative impact on the human condition have been known and explored for a long time. The aim of this study was to determine associations between perceived parental attitudes and positive changes after a traumatic experience. The research group consisted of 72 young people (36 boys and 36 girls) aged 10–17 years who were victims of road accidents. The research tools were the Personal Growth Questionnaire – KOW-27 developed by N. Ogińska-Bulik and Parental Attitudes Scale – SPR, version for young people, by M. Plopa. The respondents have experienced positive changes as a result of a negative life situation. The results showed a signifi cant, though varying, role of parental attitudes, especially attitudes of mothers, that were correlated with personal growth. Their meaning is associated not so much with the general index of posttraumatic growth than with each of its dimensions.

Previous research based on Jan Strelaus (2006) Regulative Theory of Temperament (RTT) shows that energetic traits of temperament and non-harmonization of its structure are of particular signifi cance to the risk of development of problems with alcohol drinking in late adolescents and young adults. The purpose of this study was to verify the results of previous research. The degree of alcohol use involvement constituted the variable explained, whereas temperament traits and their structure constituted the predictor variables. The degree of alcohol use involvement was measured with the use of Ryszard Poprawa’s (2013) Alcohol Use Scale (AUS). Temperament traits according to RTT were measured with the use of Bogdan Zawadzki and Jan Strelau’s (1997) Formal Characteristics of Behaviour – Temperament Inventory (FCB-TI). A sample of 208 adolescents and young adults at the age of 16 to 20 years old were interviewed. As a result of a multiple regression analysis, two sex-dependent models of the AUS temperamental predictor were selected. The temperamental variables determine the AUS results to a greater degree when it comes to young men rather than women. Together with the lower sensory sensitivity, emotional reactivity and endurance, and higher activity in men comes their deeper alcohol use involvement. Together with the higher activity and emotional reactivity, and lower sensory sensitivity in women comes their deeper alcohol use involvement. Based on the cluster analysis, there were selected groups of young men and women whose structure of temperament traits on the one hand predispose them to deep alcohol use involvement and on the other hand might protect them against risky involvement . In contrast to previous research, it was proved that low sensory sensitivity is of crucial importance to the degree of alcohol use involvement. It has not been fully proved that the lack of temperament structure harmonization has any particular significance to the risk of addiction in young women.

Injury is the leading cause of death and disability in children and adolescents in Poland. In 2009, 1220 children age 0-19 years died as a result of injury. If the rate of injury deaths in Poland could be reduced to the level of the Netherlands, it is estimated that 703 (58%) of these lives could have been saved. The aim of this study was to assess child and adolescent unintentional injury prevention in Poland through national law and policy. The study was based on an examination of law and policies existing and implemented or enforced in Poland which support child safety, including specific injury areas such as road safety, water safety, fall prevention, poisoning prevention, burn and scalds prevention, choking and strangulation prevention. The review of law and policy documents, as well as interviews by phone or e-mail with representatives of government departments was conducted. The questionnaire developed in the frame of the European Project TACTICS (Tools to Address Childhood Trauma, Injury and Children’s Safety) was applied. Each policy and law as a marker for specific injury areas was assessed on 3-points scale. The following scores were obtained for each of the areas of child and adolescent injury prevention in Poland (out of possible 100%): 89% in moped and motor scooter safety, 86% in poisoning prevention, 75% in pedestrian safety, 75% in cycling safety, 75% in water safety and drowning prevention, 64% in burn and scalds prevention, 59% in passenger and driver safety, 59% in choking and strangulation prevention, 50% in fall safety. Child home safety related to prevention of falls, burns and scalds, choking and strangulation has not received the adequate attention. The greatest gains in injury prevention have been made in road safety and poisoning prevention. It is important to both continue these efforts and give equal attention to injuries occurring in and around the home, sport and leisure environments. There is a need to support and fund good practices injury prevention measures based on community level targeting families with low socio-economic status.

Hearing impairment is regarded to be a barrier to the psychological development and language skills of deaf students. In understanding and establishing what comprises the value priorities amongst adolescents, certain deviations can be expected amongst teenagers who are deaf or who have hearing impairment. The article describes and compares the value priorities of 246 adolescents who are deaf or with hearing impairment from Poland and the Czech Republic with hearing peers. The Schwartz Portrait Values Questionnaire is used to measure the value priorities of the respective groups of participants. In comparison to peers responses the results indicate that hearing status impacts upon an individuals’ values of conformity, tradition as well as achievement, however, other value priorities are shown to be infl uenced by gender and country of domicile
