Der deutsche Kolonialismus in Südwestafrika und die Ausrottung der Herero bilden eine wichtige thematische Achse im Werk von Helga M. Novak. Die Analyse der einschlägigen Texte zeigt, dass die Autorin der in der DDR herrschenden Deutung des Kolonialismus stets verpflichtet blieb. Novak teilt die von den DDR-Historikern vertretene Kontinuitätsthese, laut der eine kontinuierliche Entwicklung zwischen dem wilhelminischen Kolonialismus und dem Faschismus bestanden habe. Eine Schlüsselfigur in Novaks Aufarbeitung des deutschen Kolonialismus bildet der General Lettow-Vorbeck, einer der Hauptverantwortlichen der Niederschlagung des Aufstands der Herero; die Verklärung als Held, der er in der Bundesrepublik der 1960er Jahre aufgrund seiner siegreichen Kriegskampagne in Ostafrika unterworfen wurde, belegt nach der Ansicht Novaks das Fortbestehen reaktionärer Kräfte in den Institutionen der BRD.
Helga M. Novak often in her works refers to the German Colonialism in South West Africa and particularly to the genocide of the Herero. The analysis of the texts in which Novak dealt with these themes shows how the author remained lifelong devoted to the interpretation of colonialism which was prevailing in the GRD. Novak subscribed to the so called „continuity theory“, according to which a coherent development dating from the German Colonialism in the Era of Emperor Wilhelm II to Fascism became recognizable; furthemore Novak stigmatizated the glorification for which General LettowVorbeck, one of the main responsibles of the extermination of the Herero, was acclaimed in the Bundesrepublik of the 1960s because of his success in the military campaign in Eastafrica during the First World War. Owing to this example, Novak could give evidence of how reactionary tendencies remained in force within the institutions of the German Federal Republic. - Źródło:
