Opis:
Research concerning children and childhood has been developing on the background of the evolution of different narrations (discourses) about a child. After the Convention on the rights of the child, narrations on the children’s rights and then about child well-being and the quality of children’s life became the very meaningful. As a consequence, a new type of research on childhood has been developing which has some specific foundations as for the object and procedures used. In the paper an attempt to expose main methodological assumptions of the new paradigm is presented, the role of subjective treatment of children in research and some patterns of childhood studies. This paradigm is dedicated to pedagogues, especially social pedagogues, as the way of researching childhoods close to their perception of studies as socially engaged and as interdisciplinary in the spectrum of exploration.

Opis:
The paper presents two faces of the problem of corporal punishment. One is a global tendency or even a movement towards forbidding all forms of violence against children, and also those that have been traditionally presented in upbringing. There are several international legal instruments that undertake the problem of corporal punishment, starting from the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The most important ones are reviewed in the paper as well as some global initiatives that are being undertaken especially in the last decade. The other face of the problem is a practice of the everyday upbringing of children which can still be described as violent, a practice where parents still approve some violent behaviours and still behave violently towards their children. The paper presents a part of the survey carried out among parents of children below 18 years old. The results show that violence in upbringing is visible in Poland, that corporal punishment is still accepted and experienced by Polish children, although in Poland there has been an official ban of corporal punishment since 2010. The survey shows that both knowledge on the law and parents’ attitudes towards some violent behaviours should be corrected.

Opis:
The article addresses the problems of presence and absence of child’s voice in kindergarten and their significance for the development of critically thinking entities/citizens. On the basis of our qualitative studies, two separate ways of perceiving the significance of nonadults’ voice in the early childhood education process have emerged. The first one, relating to the affirmation of free child expression, is typical for personal declarations of young educators. The second way is about practising children’s silence in kindergarten and it characterises the events described by aspiring teachers, witnessed during their professional practice. On this basis, we have identified the mechanism of inclusion and the mechanism of exclusion of child’s voice in kindergarten.

Korczak's literary writing

Opis:
Janusz Korczak’s literary writing can be perceived as an endeavour to change the world, to make the world fair and marked by greater solidarity. The reading of his texts draws attention of the recipient to the ways in which he characterises children and calls for the necessity of treating them rightly by adults. The author of the article focuses on the persuasiveness of narration, understood as a specific game played with the recipient, and the linguistic features used by Korczak in his literary works. The aim of the article is to show the linguistic features employed by Korczak in presenting theses regarding the situation of children and expressing his beliefs about the protection of children’s rights. The author analysed Korczak’s literary work entitled When I am Little Again. Stylistically diverse narration is subordinated to one goal – convincement of the recipient to the narrator’s arguments. Considered as a whole, the article is an attempt to combine a pedagogical perspective with the poetics of reception.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to outline the specifics of places and spaces – refugee camps and centers, where children constitute the majority. Through reference to activities implemented there and oriented towards children, we discuss their problematic character connected with e.g. the absence of participatory, rights-based approach (art. 12 CRC) that serves children’s emancipation and equality. In the second part of the article, we propose the implementation of Janusz Korczak’s methods – solutions for participatory work with children (“underprivileged” groups), which seem both timeless and universal. An ethical and contextual adaptation or inspiration based on Korczak’s methods in work designed for backgrounds connected with children remaining in closed and semi-closed systems, provides a chance for children’s basic participation in decision-making in matters that concern their lives. At the same time, it is an opportunity to learn children’s opinions and an expression of respect for the child as a per-son who functions here and now, in the place and space of his or her temporary stay – a refugee camp, where an international protection system for children and adults is far from effective.
