    This study examines an intensity of demographic processes in rural areas of Poland focusing on its characteristic strong regional variation. A diagnostic approach is used to investigate selected aspects of spatial variations in rural areas of Poland such as: 1) the problem of spatial isolation of rural localities, 2) the aging of the rural population, 3) the problem of unused labor resources in rural areas.

    Przedmiotem opracowania jest zagadnienie kurczenia się miast, a jego celem identyfikacja towarzyszących temu zjawisk ludnościowych. Identyfikacji tej dokonano na przykładzie jednego z miast polskich, jakim jest Łódź. Wybór tego właśnie miasta miał charakter celowy, albowiem tam właśnie proces kurczenia się ma tak duże nasilenie, iż zagraża dalszemu jego istnieniu. W opracowaniu przedstawiono znaczenie zmian bazy gospodarczej dla analizowanego procesu oraz dokonano analizy wybranych aspektów sytuacji demograficznej i gospodarczej Łodzi na tle innych wielkich miast polskich. W zakończeniu wskazano na potrzebę tworzenia nowej bazy gospodarczej miast.
    The main issue in the paper is the shrinking of the city and the purpose of the analysis was to identify the population phenomena that accompany the process. The identification was based on an example of one of Polish cities – Lodz. The choice of this particular city was not accidental. The shrinking process there is of such an intensity that it becomes a threat to its existence in the future. The paper presents the importance of changes to the economic basis for the analysed process. Additionally an analysis of selected aspects of demographical and economic situation of Lodz was performed in comparison to other Polish cities. Conclusions point at the need for the creation of a new economic basis for the city.

    W opracowaniu przedstawiono zmiany w stanie liczebnym oraz strukturze demograficznej ludności województwa śląskiego ogółem, jak i w poszczególnych jego podregionach w latach 2013-2050. W perspektywie 2050 r. demograficzny regres w województwie śląskim będzie się pogłębiał, o czym świadczy ujemny przyrost naturalny łącznie z ubytkiem migracyjnym ludności. Zmianie ulegnie typ zaludnienia w podregionach bielskim i tyskim, w którym ujemny przyrost naturalny nie będzie rekompensowany przez dodatnie saldo migracji. Malejąca liczba ludności, malejąca liczba osób w wieku produkcyjnym oraz rosnąca liczba osób w wieku poprodukcyjnym oznacza dla całego województwa śląskiego znaczne osłabienie potencjału ludzkiego.
    The paper describes changes in the number of people and in demographic structure of the population in the entire silesian voivodeship, and also in its particular subregions in the years 2013-2050. In the perspective of 2050 demographic decline in silesian voivodeship is going to progress, which is proved by negative population growth and migration loss. The settlement type, in which negative population growth will not be compensated for by positive migration balance, will change in Bielskie and Tyskie subregions. Declining number of people, as well as decreasing working age population and growing number of post working age population indicate significant decrease in human potential in the entire silesian voivodeship.

    From two decades we have observed changing of demographic processes (and these processes were not similar by voivodships) which have lead to changed of structure of the population by age. Purpose of the article is a description of it, extract the similar regions and assessment of the regions structures of the population to the progressive pyramid of age. This approach will allow to assessment of the spatial dynamics of the process of ageing of the population.

    The society aging process is inescapable in Poland, similarly as in other European countries. This is proved by the demographic data and clear increasing trends of life expectancy. The consequence is the escalation of the phenomenon of multiple morbidity in elderly people and their limited possibilities to live on their own. Those issues, coupled with the financial shortages of the health care system, pose a new challenge for the public payer, i.e. the National Health Fund (NFZ). In this paper, the author identifies and subsequently analyses and evaluates the necessary actions related to the process of elderly care in Poland. She seeks an answer to the question whether the Polish health care system is prepared, or is duly preparing, for this intensified obligation.

    Celem badania jest analiza tendencji rozwojowych wybranych charakterystyk demograficznych w krajach Europy Centralnej i Wschodniej, które mają istotny wpływ na proces reprodukcji ludności i rozwój demograficzny. Badanie przeprowadzono z wykorzystaniem danych Eurostatu za okres 2000-2013 dla dziesięciu krajów, tj. Bułgarii, Czech, Estonii, Litwy, Łotwy, Polski, Rumunii, Słowacji, Słowenii i Węgier. Na podstawie wykresu W. Webba prześledzono także proces przemian typologicznych w zakresie kształtowania się relacji między przyrostem naturalnym ludności a saldem migracji.
    The goal of the study is to analyse development trends in selected demographic characteristics in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe that have significant impact on the process of reproduction of population and demographic development. The study was performed on the basis of Eurostat data for the period between 2000 and 2013 for ten countries including Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Hungary. Based on Webb’s diagram the process of typological changes in the sphere of shaping the relationships between population growth and migration balance was also monitored.
