Opis:
The paper compares performance of Baldwin's fuzzy reasoning based on a fuzzy truth value with the fastest available solutions. The analysis is important in order to locate areas where improvement of the first is the most significant. Potential fast approach based on the fuzzy truth value would be very interesting for many users applying fuzzy systems to solve problems involved with complex knowledge bases. Particularly, all research considering an analysis of genes employing DNA microarrays. Such methods very often generate rules with thousands of atomic premises. The most valuable advantage of Baldwin's reasoning is preserving a fuzzy relation between a fact and a premise in the inference process, where other solutions, especially those commonly used, usually reduce it to only one value. Obtaining the method which, from computation time point of view, is comparable with common approaches but offers more advanced process of fuzzy reasoning, would be a significant achievement. The goal of this analysis is to prepare the future research considering development of Baldwin's method, which computational complexity is comparable to simple, fast and widely used solutions like systems based on the approach of Mamdani and Assilan or Larsen.

Opis:
Uncertain queries are very common in many areas of human activity. The problem can be seen particularly in medicine, where expressions like ”very high”, ”low”, ”normal” are commonly used in order to describe different information. However, the most popular data repositories do not allow to form imprecise queries in order to filter information. Therefore, the paper proposes an extension to the standard SQL language allowing anybody to profit from fuzzy database using any SQL engine. The existing approaches employ different mechanisms in order to allow the user to perform fuzzy queries on a database. The most complex solutions modify the database engine itself. However, such approach is strongly bound to the modified server version and must be updated with any development of the original server. Nevertheless, there is possible to store fuzzy information using for instance columns of regular relational database. Therefore, this approach proposes extensions to the query language allowing to use fuzzy information in a query and provides a parser transforming a fuzzy query into a standard SQL. Thus, the database server version is irrelevant. The solution is provided as a module written in multi-platform Java language using popular JDBC database connection.

Opis:
Fuzzy systems are widely used in research and applications considering complex information like gene recognition and classification. Because of the character of genetic data, the extensive knowledge bases of such systems contain complex rules described by even thousands of atomic premises. This paper presents an analysis of fuzzy reasoning based on a fuzzy truth value, presented by Baldwin. The solution is an interesting, alternative approach to fuzzy inference. Considering the Zadeh’s compositional rule of inference, the idea of Baldwin has an advantage of resolving the whole inference process within the truth space. The approach is especially convenient for systems with large number of premises in rules, like mentioned gene classification systems. Although the solution of Baldwin is characterized by significantly lower computational complexity than the full implementation of the compositional rule of inference, it is not applied in contemporary systems. Over the years different researchers proposed simplified approaches, which are easier to implement and faster. The analysis presented in this paper considers possible simplifications that could be applied to the approach of Baldwin, where facts and fuzzy truth values are described by triangular membership functions. Such assumptions open the possibility of implementation of fast Baldwin’s inference and applications even for complex genetic data. Nevertheless, the solution would preserve one of the biggest advantage, which is the fuzzy relation, in form of the truth function, between a fact and a premise, throughout the whole inference process. Other fast approaches reduce this relation to only one value.

The approximate reasoning based on a fuzzy truth value is based on a different view of linguistic statements and comparing with the compositional rule of inference has some advantages. Benefits of the method are especially important for fuzzy expert systems with large sets of premises. The problem is very common for many applications in medicine, biology and biometry. By a short analysis of the approach and comparing to the compositional rule of inference the paper emphasizes the most important advantages of a possible implementation, which is particularly significant for the mentioned fields.

This paper presents a new hybrid fuzzy clustering method. In the proposed method, cluster prototypes are values that minimize the introduced generalized cost function. The proposed method can be considered as a generalization of fuzzy c–means (FCM) method as well as the fuzzy c–median (FCMed) clustering method. The generalization of the cluster cost function is made by applying the Lp norm. The values that minimize the proposed cost function have been chosen as the group prototypes. The weighted myriad is the special case of the group prototype, when the Lp norm is the L2 (Euclidean) norm. The cluster prototypes are the weighted meridians for the L1 norm. Artificial data set is used to demonstrate the performance of proposed method.

In the paper we discuss the analysis of multidimensional data. We consider the relationship between them using a special fuzzy number form. Calculations are kept on set of actual and historical meteorological data. Our model using to forecast pollution concentrations is important in today because pollutions have very big influence on our life in particular pollutions PM10 (particulate matter less than 10 µm in diameter). The effects of inhaling particulate matter have been widely studied in humans and animals and include asthma, lung cancer, cardiovascular issues, and premature death. Because of the size of the particle, they can penetrate the deepest part of the lungs. In Air Pollution Forecasting Model for the chosen weather forecast we find similar weather forecasts. Next, we find real meteorological situations from the historical data which correspond to them and we create fuzzy numbers, that is, the fuzzy weather forecasts. Then we estimate the validity of the weather forecast on the basis of the historical data and its accuracy. We investigate it with the help of a set of indicators, which corresponds to the parameters of the weather forecast, using the similarities rule of the weather forecast to the meteorological situation, a proper distance and data analysis. This comprehensive analysis allows us to investigate the effectiveness of forecasting pollution concentrations, putting the dependence between particular attributes describing the weather forecast in order and proving the legitimacy of the applicable fuzzy numbers in air pollution forecasting. Models are created for data, which are measured and forecasting in Poland. By reason of this data our models are testing in real sets of data and effects are received in active system.

Opis:
The paper introduces a significant improvement of the signature recognition method based on characteristic preprocessing of an input data. The original approach transforms an input data into a sorted set of points obtained from intersections of a signature with generated lines going through it's center point. For further analysis the discrete Walsh transform was used. The solution presented in this paper divides points obtained in the preprocessing phase into groups. This step allows the method to preserve more unique features, which positively reflects on the results. Preprocessed data is used to build a fuzzy structure called the fuzzy signature. The method considering a natural imprecision makes the verification system flexible.

Opis:
In the presented work two variants of the fuzzy clustering approach dedicated for determining the antecedents of the rules of the fuzzy rule-based classifier were presented. The main idea consists in adding additional prototypes (’prototypes in between’) to the ones previously obtained using the fuzzy c-means method (ordinary prototypes). The ’prototypes in between’ are determined using pairs of the ordinary prototypes, and the algorithm based on distances and densities finding such pairs was proposed. The classification accuracy obtained applying the presented clustering approaches was verified using six benchmark datasets and compared with two reference methods.

The analysis of eye movements is valuable in both clinical work and research. One of the characteristic type of eye movements is saccade. The accurate detection of saccadic eye movements is the base for further processing of saccade parameters such velocity, amplitude and duration. This paper presents an accurate saccade detection method which is supported by the fuzzy clustering. The proposed detection function is computationally efficient and precisely determines the time position of the saccadic eye movement event. The described method is characterized by low sensitivity for any kind of noise and can be applied in the analysis of the congenital nystagmus.

Classification plays very important role in medical diagnosis. This paper presents fuzzy clustering method dedicated to classification algorithms. It focuses on two additional sub-methods modifying obtained clustering prototypes and leading to final prototypes, which are used for creating the classifier fuzzy if-then rules. The main goal of that work was to examine a performance of the classifier which uses such rules. Commonly used including medical benchmark databases were applied. In order to validate the results, each database was represented by 100 pairs of learning and testing subsets. The obtained classification quality was better in relation to the one of the best classifiers - Lagrangian SVM and suggests that presented clustering with additional sub-methods are appropriate to application to classification algorithms.

The paper proposes possible improvements in signature recognition approach based on window method. The analysis focuses on a stage of window preprocessing using fuzzy sets in order to choose significant ranges of each signature. Proposed extension allows the solution to improve in two areas. First of all minimizing a number of processed windows significantly reduces computation time. Secondly, filtered signatures with valuable information about significant ranges allow the system to recognize signatures of a poor or good quality. Developed method of signature quality assessment can be used in any signature recognition system, regardless of used method of analysis. Merging the information about signature quality and choosing only important signature ranges should also improve the overall detection results, however, more examinations are needed to confirm this statement.

Characteristic points detection such as beginnings and ends of P-wave, T-wave or QRS complex is one of primary aims in automated analysis of ECG signal. The paper presents one possible approach based on Bayesian inference to design of kernel based classifier. The classification function is constructed using the probability distribution function of standard normal distribution and independent Gaussian random variables. The parameters of such variables are computed using iterative Expectation-Maximization algorithm. This approach is used to calculate parameters of classification function to modelling Takagi-Sugeno-Kang fuzzy systems. Numerical experiment of characteristic points detection in ECG signal using CTS database is also presented.

Recording and analysis of fetal heart rate (FHR) signal is nowadays the primary method for the biophysical assessment of the fetal state. Since the correct interpretation of crucial FHR characteristics is difficult, methods of automated quantitative signal evaluation are still the subject of the research studies. In the following paper we investigated the possibility of improvement of the fetal state evaluation on the basis of the epsilon-insensitive learning (eIL). We examined two eIL procedures integrated with fuzzy clustering algorithms as well as different methods of logical interpretation of the fuzzy conditional statements. The quality of the FHR signal classification was evaluated using the data collected with the computerized fetal surveillance system. The learning performance was measured with the number of correct classification (CC) and overall quality index (QI) defined as a geometric mean of sensitivity and specificity. The obtained results (CC = 88 % and QI = 87 %) show a high efficiency of the fetal state assessment using the epsilon-insensitive learning based methods.

In this study, we address the problem of medical diagnosis by applying Fuzzy Cognitive Map (FCM). A distinctive feature of the FCM is its ability to simulate the development of the disease in time. By this simulation, it is possible to predict the severity of the disease by having future knowledge on current medical investigations. For the first time in this paper, we construct an FCM-based classifier dedicated solely to perform medical diagnosis. To learn the FCM, we use an evolutionary algorithm explicitly specifying the newly designed fitness function. Real, publicly available medical data are applied for the validation and evaluation of the proposed approach.
