Opis:: The city of Lodz is strictly connected with Piotrkowska Street which is the heart and the symbol of the city. We can easily find stories of specific men and their images which are related to Piotrkowska Street. The street is also presented as a space which in a visual way exposes men commonly considered as important ones for the culture of the place. Thanks to clashing tradition with modernity plenty of examples of men characters were created. The researcher restores, with special care, marginal and little-known pictures to social remembrance. The men of Piotrkowska Street are great and insignificant, wellknown and nameless, exceptional and ordinary as well.

Opis:: The article presents the “do it yourself” (DIY) phenomenon which is popular in culture nowadays. It constitutes a distinctly noticeable sign of the return to craftwork based on manual work. The author treats this phenomenon as a modern continuation of old handicraft and craft traditions, while at the same time she notices its new functions and socio-cultural meanings. The author recalls historical contexts of the “do it yourself” philosophy in the culture of the West, as well as in native cultural traditions; she also presents current examples of activities of this kind, taken from websites and internet blogs. In the author’s view, the DIY phenomenon is situated in the circle of current trends of design, it is an expression of the criticism of consumerist society and is an ecological attitude towards the natural environment. It also remains strongly connected with the outlook of the involved people and social groups, as well as constituting evidence of people’s creative involvement in their relations with the material world.

Opis:: Dieser Artikel versucht nachzuzeichnen, wie sich innerhalb der polnischen Germanistik ein auf die Literatur Österreichs spezialisierter eigener Forschungszweig herauskristallisiert hat. Dabei soll es neben der Semantik des dadurch entstandenen Bildes Österreichs und moderner österreichischer Literatur v. a. um die historische Entwicklung dieses Forschungszweiges selbst gehen.
Artykuł podejmuje próbę rekonstrukcji odrębnego kierunku badań w germanistyce polskiej, koncentrującego się na literaturze austriackiej. Oprócz znaczenia stworzonego w ten sposób obrazu Austrii i współczesnej literatury austriackiej chodzi przede wszystkim o historyczny rozwój tego kierunku badawczego.
The article makes an attempt at reconstruction of a distinct research course in the German studies in Poland, focusing on Austrian literature. Apart from the significance of the image of Austria and the contemporary Austrian literature created in this way, the article discusses primarily the historical development of this research direction.
