    The goal of the article is to present the scope of interventions by the Regional Offices for the Control of Publications and Performances in the Catholic press during the decline of the People’s Republic of Poland (PRL) and the first months of the Republic of Poland, i.e. between January 1989 and April 1990. Initial censorship was a period which preceded the Round Table talks while final censorship ended with the abolition of censorship, i.e. the passing of the act (11 April 1990) on the liquidation of the institutions for the control of publications and performances. The source material for the article were the files of the Main Office of Control of Press, Publications and Shows stored in the Archives of New Records.

    Opis:
    The subject of this article is combating adult illiteracy in the People’s Republic of Poland. The existing knowledge concerning the topic has been supplemented with the analysis of the archival documents, currently being in possession of the Central Archives of Modern Records in Warsaw. It describes how illiterates were recognised in the society, in what way they were encouraged to train new skills and how attending the courses was made possible for them. The analysed documents include censors’ reviews of manuals, press articles, letters wrote by former illiterates and other valuable records. The communists were combating illiteracy not only in the name of the social progress, but mostly motivated by their quest to broaden the possibilities of ideological indoctrination – during the courses organised for illiterates and later on. This is why the selection of manuals and other publications addressed to former illiterates was propagandist. The strategic importance of the matter was expressed by Vladimir Lenin himself: “Socialism cannot be built by illiterates” (W. Ozga, Education in the six-year-plan and the revolutionary changes of the society and economics in the People’s Republic of Poland, Warsaw 1951, p. 124).

    Tekst poświęcono polskim artystkom uprawiającym w okresie PRL-u plakat – dziedzinę grafiki użytkowej uważaną jeszcze pod koniec XX wieku za męską domenę. Zawiera krótki zarys aktywności kobiet w tej dyscyplinie – od sytuacji pierwszych polskich artystek tworzących plakaty w ramach duetów projektowych lub spółek reklamowych w latach 30. XX wieku poprzez kształcenie artystyczne i dokonania projektantek w dziedzinie plakatu w okresie PRL-u aż do przełomu XX i XXI wieku, kiedy nastąpiła zasadnicza zmiana w statusie i postrzeganiu pracy polskich projektantek. W tekście podjęto próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie, dlaczego dorobek polskich plakacistek jest bardzo słabo reprezentowany w licznych opracowaniach poświęconych polskiemu plakatowi XX wieku i dlaczego w przypadku małżeńskich par artystów zajmujących się (indywidualnie) tworzeniem plakatów rozpoznawalność i prestiż stawały się zazwyczaj udziałem mężczyzny. Pomijanie roli kobiet na tym polu widoczne jest także we współczesnym dyskursie dotyczącym polskiego plakatu, szczególnie w badaniach skoncentrowanych na Polskiej Szkole Plakatu (dostrzeganie niemal wyłącznie męskiej reprezentacji tego zjawiska).
    The paper is dedicated to Polish women artists involved in poster design during the People’s Republic of Poland, an area of graphic design still considered a male domain at the end of the 20th century. The text provides a brief overview of women’s activity in this discipline – from the situation of the first Polish female poster artists creating posters as design duos or advertising companies in the 1930s, through the artistic education and achievements of female poster designers during the communist era, to the turn of the 20th and 21st century, when a fundamental change in the status and perception of the work of Polish female designers occurred. The paper attempts to answer the question why the output of Polish female poster artists is very poorly represented in numerous studies devoted to the Polish poster of the 20th century and why in the case of married couples of artists involved (individually) in poster creation, recognition and prestige usually went to the man. Overlooking the role of women in this field is also evident in the contemporary discourse on the Polish poster art, notably in studies focused on the Polish Poster School which, almost exclusively, recognize the male representation in this phenomenon.

    The article raises the topic of good manners and upbringing in the People’s Republic of Poland using the example of children’s and young adult press from the period. The author analysed 24 issues of Płomyczek from 1968 considering literature in education, upbringing strategies, and etiquette. Leaving aside the issues of propaganda and ideology, she enriched the analysis by considering the political history of Poland during the period of the “minor stabilisation”.
    Artykuł podejmuje tematykę dobrych manier i wychowania w okresie PRL na przykładzie ówczesnej prasy dziecięcej i młodzieżowej. Autorka przeanalizowała 24 numery pisma Płomyczek z 1968 r. przy użyciu literatury z zakresu dydaktyki, strategii wychowawczych, a także etykiety i savoir-vivre. Abstrahując od zagadnień propagandy i ideologii, wzbogaciła swą analizę o historię polityczną Polski z okresu „małej stabilizacji”.

It also indicates the influence of independent information and cultural hubs on those media that were organised in a central doctrine according to marksist-leninist rules.

    The author of this paper focuses his interest on the State-Church relations during the period of the People’s Republic of Poland. Considering the threefold tasks of the Church in the world i.e. the ministry of governance, teaching and sanctifying, the author has made an attempt to specify the fundamental problems of a political, social, legal and administrative character encountered by the Catholic Church in the process of implementation of the above mentioned mission in Poland in the years 1945–1989.
    Przedmiotem zainteresowania autora opracowania są relacje państwo – Kościół w Polsce Rzeczpospolitej Ludowej. Mając na uwadze trojakie zadania Kościoła w świecie, a mianowicie posługę rządzenia, nauczania i uświęcania, podjął on próbę określenia fundamentalnych problemów natury politycznej, społecznej, prawnej i administracyjnej, na jakie natrafił Kościół katolicki w zakresie realizacji wspomnianej misji w Polsce w latach 1945–1989.
