    Today travelling is a global phenomenon. Many journeys involve cross-cultural contacts, often between cultures which are very remote from each other. Some questions arise: does the contemporary traveller expect cross-cultural contacts and how does he/she imagine such interactions? These seemingly simple questions enable us to reflect on the intentionality and complexity of cross-cultural interactions, the main issue discussed in the article. The author draws the reader's attention to the social roles assumed by the modern traveller, as well as the theoretical scenarios of cross-cultural contact, analyzing its symmetric and asymmetric forms.

    Opis:
    The paper depicts demographic situation in Poland and in the European Union countries, proving that it is crucial to consider issues of life and of senior social performance. The aim of the paper is to show diversity of senior social roles in frames of national representative statistical data. The paper evaluates also the concept of senior social roles proposed by Zofia Szarota. On its’ grounds the author’s original concept of senior social roles is proposed. In the first section of the paper, trends and demographic prognoses are depicted. In the second section, by implementation of the author`s concept of senior social roles the analysis of senior social activity in Poland is done.
    Artykuł ukazuje sytuację demograficzną w Polsce i w krajach Unii Europejskiej, dowodząc zasadności zajmowania się zagadnieniem życia i społecznego funkcjonowania seniorów. Celem artykułu było ukazanie różnorodności ról społecznych realizowanych przez polskich seniorów w oparciu o dostępne wyniki ogólnopolskich reprezentatywnych badań oraz dane statystyczne. W artykule przedstawiono także ocenę koncepcji ról seniorów zaproponowanej przez Zofię Szarotę i w oparciu o nią dokonano konstrukcji autorskiej klasyfikacji ról społecznych współczesnych seniorów. W pierwszej części zaprezentowano trendy i prognozy demograficzne, zaś w drugiej, w oparciu o autorską klasyfikację ról społecznych, dokonano ich analizy.

    This paper shows how conducting the ethnographic study of a theater hall and company can help define theater activity. Once the aesthetic of the social organization is set apart from the proper division of labor, theater appears as a collective activity which requires the cooperation of eight groups playing different social roles. The cooperation modes rest on a meshing of direct or indirect services for the actors who carry out the core task of performing. This specific organization of work around a central group is what makes the activity artistic. Simultaneously, the service relation offers the possibility for some categories to bring their relationship with actors closer to a state of symmetry and sometimes reverse asymmetry. As a status enhancing opportunity, service relationship for actors also directly or indirectly provide the grounds for participant commitment and thus guarantee long-lasting operation for the theatrical organization.

    The purpose of the presented paper is to redefine the place and category of elderly people facing the demographic and cultural changes in the contemporary world. It presents the lack of precision to define the topic because of the internal cate- gory differentiation. The paper makes an attempt to discuss the generation gap distance on the basis of Margaret Mead's theory and tries to give an answer to the question of the present and future role of elderly people in the post-modern society.

    Artykuł podejmuje temat funkcjonowania stereotypów w procesie nauczania dorosłego ucznia języka i kultury polskiej jako obcych. Dzięki prezentowanym podczas lektoratów materiałom dydaktycznym, m.in. podręcznikom i zbiorom ćwiczeń, uczący się (re)konstruują stereotypy Polski, Polaka, Polki, polskiej rodziny, stosunków społecznych. Opis został ograniczony do stereotypów płci i związanych z nimi ról społecznych kobiet i mężczyzn, zainteresowań, a także ich wyglądu zewnętrznego i cech charakteru. Analiza materiału pozwala stwierdzić, że obecny w środkach dydaktycznych stereotypowy obraz płci występuje w różnym stopniu. W analizowanych podręcznikach do nauki języka polskiego jako obcego wydanych na początku XXI wieku treści stereotypu kobiety i mężczyzny ulegają modyfikacjom. Młodzi ludzie bez względu na płeć są otwarci na świat, studiują, podróżują po Polsce i Europie, utrzymują kontakty z rówieśnikami z całego świata. Kobiety, które skończyły już studia, jawią się jako osoby wykonujące zawody dotąd uznawane za profesje kobiece i męskie, podobnie w domu odpowiadają za niemal wszystkie czynności, a mężczyźni to osoby, dla których praca zawodowa jest najważniejsza.
    The article discusses the problem of functioning of stereotypes in the process of teaching the Polish language and culture as foreign language to an adult student. Thanks to the didactic materials presented during the course, learners re-construct the stereotypes of, for example, Polish, Poles, Polish woman, Polish family and social relations. The description was limited to gender stereotypes and social roles of women and men, their interests, as well as appearance and character traits. The analysis allows to claim that the stereotypical gender image in the didactic materials is present to a different extent. In the analyzed textbooks for teaching Polish as a foreign language, published at the beginning of the 21st century, the content of the stereotype of a woman and a man undergoes modifications. Young people, regardless of gender, are open to the world, they study, travel around Poland and Europe, and maintain contacts with their peers from all over the world. Women who have already finished their studies appear to be people performing professions previously considered female and male professions, similarly they perform almost all activities at home, and men are people for whom professional work is the most important.

    Niniejszy numer tematyczny skoncentrowany jest wokół dwóch pytań: po pierwsze, jakie miejsce zajmuje sztuka w jakościowych badaniach socjologicznych, a po drugie, jak za pomocą działań artystycznych i badawczych można zmierzyć się z problemem inności i obcości (także w relacji artystów i badaczy). Dotychczasowe doświadczenia wskazują, że najbliższe związki między nauką i sztuką realizowane są w ramach podejść krytycznych i zaangażowanych. Autorka wprowadzenia sugeruje, że kluczem do efektywnego zestawienia socjologii z działaniami artystycznymi w jednym projekcie badawczym jest rozdzielenie ich udziału na różne etapy lub poziomy badania: działania artystyczne najlepiej sprawdzałyby się na poziomie zaprojektowania i przeprowadzenia interwencji oraz zaangażowania uczestników i odbiorców dzieła, a zadaniem socjologów byłoby wspomaganie planowania i organizacji interwencji artystycznej, a następnie zbieranie materiałów dokumentujących jej przebieg, dokonanie ich analizy i interpretacji oraz ewaluacja projektu pod kątem jego wpływu na otoczenie społeczne i rozwój wiedzy o badanym aspekcie życia społecznego. Jest to stanowisko raczej umiarkowane niż radykalne, ale pozwalające zapewnić odrębność i specjalizację obu dziedzin wytwarzania wiedzy i uwzględniające ograniczenia i wymagania pochodzące z kontekstu społecznego. Elementy takiej strategii zastosowali autorzy i autorki artykułów zamieszczonych w tym tomie, koncentrując się na analizie dzieł i sytuacji ich tworzenia, pierwszy ruch pozostawiając artystom.
    This thematic issue focuses on two questions, namely – ‘what place does art occupy in qualitative sociological research?’; and ‘how can joined academic and artistic explorations address the problem of otherness (also within the interaction between artists and social researchers)?’ The foregoing experience indicates that the closest relationship between social sciences and art has been realized within critical approaches. Representing a less radical stance, the author suggests that the key to an effective combination of sociology with artistic activities is to divide the participation of them into different stages or levels of a given research project. While artists would work at the level of designing and conducting interventions as well as encouraging and mobilizing the involvement of the participants and the recipients of the project, the task for sociologists would be to support the planning and organization of the artistic intervention, and, subsequently, to collect materials documenting its course, analyze and interpret its results, and evaluate the whole project in terms of its impact on the social environment and the development of knowledge about the studied aspect of social life. Such an approach makes it possible to ensure the separateness and specialization of both these areas of knowledge production, and takes into account the limitations and requirements that originate from the social context. Signs of making a similar choice have been demonstrated in the contributions within this volume; the authors focus on the analysis of art works and the situation of their creation, leaving the first move to the creativity of artists.

    The paper deals with the impact of the social background for developmental disorders, searching for unfavorable factors in the three most important surroundings – family, school, contemporary group. Hence the analysis was made with signs of improper interpersonal relations and life conditions encroaching on mental balance that can be found in social agencies (school, family), responsible for personal development and behavior. Basing upon selected theoretical works and my diagnostic and therapeutic experience, various negative effects on personal development were illustrated, given the ill-adapted familial and educational systems, as well as informal roles played in contemporary groups. The paper got its material focused on the familial environment where personality traits and parental attitudes, ways of communication and pathological mechanisms permanently generate factors that appear unfavorable for personal social development (toxic messages, enforced loyalty, role delegation,collusion relationships). A particular emphasis was put on the role of social factors in the origins of both primary and secondary disorders, and on the fact that signs of difficulties and disorders a youngster meets may be an indirect reaction to factors infringing on his/her psychological balance or else – actualized belatedly when assuming new social roles.
