Opis:
The results of a nationwide research into reading habits do not instill optimism. It has been found that reading books is not a common cultural standard. This paper attempts at presenting the role of books in the life of the young generation. The author seeks to answer the question whether books constitute an inherent part or merely a tolerated, albeit not necessarily desirable element of everyday life. The analysis is based on the results of an empirical study conducted on a group of young adults aged 18–20, i.e. at a point in life where they complete secondary education and change or have changed their reading preferences. An emphasis is put on the pedagogic perspective (and the related socialization processes) as well as on the role of the environment, i.e. people in the closest social circle, in the development of young adults’ reading habits throughout their lives.
Wyniki ogólnopolskich badań poziomu czytelnictwa nie napawają optymizmem. Okazuje się, że czytanie książek nie jest powszechną normą kulturową. W wystąpieniu podjęta zostanie próba pokazania, jaką rolę odgrywa książka w życiu współczesnego młodego pokolenia (czy jest ona postrzegana w kategoriach niezbędnego atrybutu codzienności, czy też tolerowanego, aczkolwiek niekoniecznie pożądanego jej elementu). Ilustracją czynionych analiz będą wyniki badań empirycznych prowadzonych wśród młodzieży w wieku 18–20 lat, a zatem kończącej kolejny etap kształcenia i znajdującej się w takim okresie, kiedy to ulegają (uległy) wyraźnej modyfikacji zainteresowania lekturowe. Akcentując pedagogiczną perspektywę (i związane z nią procesy socjalizacyjne), podkreślona zostanie również kwestia środowiska życia młodych ludzi, czyli osób z bliskiego otoczenia, mających wpływ, w ciągu całej ich dotychczasowej biografii, na aktywność czytelniczą.

Czym jest literatura we współczesnym świecie? Jakie spełnia cele? Czy w ogóle istnieje? To pytania, na które starają się odpowiedzieć uczestnicy debaty o czytaniu i nieczytaniu. Dla wielu autorów literatura oznacza zadawanie pytań o człowieka, świat, cel życia. Jest po prostu sensem istnienia w świecie. Okazuje się jednak, że obserwujemy jej powolne umieranie, ponieważ czytamy jedynie prasę, instrukcje obsługi i billboardy, a czasem nawet jeszcze mniej. Dlaczego tak się dzieje? Winą obarcza się akademizm, ponadto czytanie staje atrybutem elit osób wykształconych lub dysponujących zasobami finansowymi. Pojawiają się opinie, że dostęp do książek utrudnia rozwój techniki.
What is literature in the modern world? What is its purpose? Do you even exist? Such and other questions are raised in the current debate about reading and not reading. For many authors, literature means asking questions about man, the world, or the purpose of life. It is simply the true meaning of being in the world. It turns out, however, it is slowly dying, as we only read newspapers, manuals and billboards, and sometimes not even that. Why is this happening? Many blame academicism, present both in schools and universities. In addition, reading is associated with elites, who are educated or who have significant financial resources at their disposal. Some also believe that access to books is hindered by advances in technology.

The article is an attempt to analyse campaigns to promote reading, including You don’t read? I won’thave sex with you, Read – pick-up, or Naked girl reading, and related concepts aiming to present a book and the very act of reading as a new attribute of attractiveness. The main aim of such initiatives is primarily a presentation of the book as a "sexual attribute" and to demonstrate the relationship between reading and intellectual attractiveness. Campaigns designed in that way, aimed at "sexualisation of literature", provoke a question about the effectiveness of such projects. The process of reading is subject to all kinds of fashions, and analysing such promotional campaigns reveals the modern reader profile and his or her reading needs, as well as the relationship between reading choices and image creation.

Set during the midst of the London Blitz, Elizabeth Bowen’s The Heat of the Day revolves around a narrative of espionage, but unlike many novels from the spy genre, it refuses to disclose all of its secrets. Instead, the novel’s dense and complex language, which so effectively expresses the dislocating effects of a city under attack, resists an easy or uncomplicated reading. This article examines the motif of reading within the novel, which manifests when its protagonist, Stella Rodney, learns her lover Robert is a Nazi spy. In her efforts to locate proof of his defection, Stella becomes caught in a recurrent but indeterminable task of rereading past events, a movement which attempts to remember the past but also foregrounds a fundamental inability to ever wholly resolve its enigmas. When Stella fails to read her past for lost clues, she is prevented from viewing the events of her life as a coherent and meaningful narrative. The novel’s difficult language reflects this lack of resolution, refusing to assimilate the events it depicts into a straightforward account. With its wartime setting as a disorienting backdrop, The Heat of the Day undermines the purpose of reading as the discovery of sense and meaning, producing instead only more questions and mysteries.

Biblioteki są bardzo ważne dla informacji, komunikacji i transformacji. Pomagają wpajać kulturę czytelniczą, tak istotną dla progresywnego rozwoju ludzkiego życia. Redukują ignorancję, a zatem wspierają alfabetyzację, wiedzę oraz nabywanie umiejętności. W celu przeprowadzenia analizy autorzy zastosowali metodologię wyszukiwania literatury. Poniższy artykuł pozwala uzyskać wgląd w kulturę czytelniczą różnych narodów oraz ilustruje rolę bibliotek w promowaniu czytelnictwa oraz środowiska efektywnego czytania w społeczeństwie. Autorzy mają również na celu poprawienie kultury czytelniczej różnych narodów poprzez zaprezentowanie swojego kraju jako studium przypadku. Artykuł wykazuje, że zakładanie klubów czytelniczych, ożywianie edukacji w szkole poprzez biblioteki elektroniczne, promocja czytania i książek w mediach są czynnikami mogącymi poprawić wskaźniki czytelnictwa.
Libraries are very important for information, communication and transformation. They help to inculcate a reading culture for an upward progression of people’s life. They reduce ignorance, thus they are empowering literacy, knowledge and skill acquisition. This paper is an opinion paper. The authors employed literature research methodology to carry out the analysis. It gives an insight into the reading culture of different nations and further portrays the role of libraries in promoting reading and an effective reading environment in the society. The authors also aim at improving the reading culture of different nations by using their own nation as a case study. The paper demonstrates that establishing of reading clubs, reviving of education in the schools through electronic libraries, promotion of books and reading in the media are those factors that could improve the situation of reading.

The purpose of this article is to present the work of Trudi Canavan, one of the currently popular author of fantasy novels. Czytanie jest złożonym procesem, który jest nieodzowny w skutecznym rozwoju kariery naukowej. Podczas czytania tekstów specjalistycznych zachodzi konieczność przejścia przez poziom dosłowny, domyślny oraz twórczo-oceniający. Dla niedoświadczonego czytelnika, który już zapoznał się z podstawową terminologią z danej dziedziny, specjalistyczne teksty mogą stanowić trudność, ponieważ potrzebne jest mu również krytyczne podejście. To oznacza wykorzystanie doświadczenia i wiedzy, które są poza tekstem, oraz umiejętność zadania odpowiednich pytań. Wyjście poza tekst daje czytelnikowi szansę lepszego zrozumienia zagadnienia. Dwa przykłady wykorzystane podczas warsztatów dają przykład, jak nauczyciele mogą przygotować studentów do czytania tekstów specjalistycznych.
Reading is a complex skill which is indispensable in order to be successful in pursuing a scientific career. While reading specialist texts, it is necessary to go through the literal, inferential and creative-evaluative levels of comprehension. For an inexperienced reader, who is already familiar with the basic terminology in a relevant field, specialist texts may pose difficulty since they need critical approach. It means using experience and knowledge beyond the text, and also the ability to ask adequate questions. Moving beyond the text gives the reader an opportunity to have an insight into the problem. Two examples used in the workshop show how teachers may prepare students to read specialist texts.

The subject of the article are new methods of reading promotion that are carried outside of the library, in the urban space, but often by librarians or in cooperation with them. The aim is to make a systematic review of the new forms of promotion, such as: street art, flash mob, performance, field games and more. Special attention is paid to the concept of ambient advertising, citing examples of its use in the promotion of films and video games, and presenting the potential for its promotion of reading. The method of analysis and criticism of literature, as well as analysis of web pages, was made. Papers published in top librarian journals, in Polish and English, between 2010–2015, were taken into account. Supplementary analysis of the network resources was made considering the largest Polish and foreign public libraries websites and librarians blogs. As a result, new methods of reading promotion in public space were discussed and typology was created according to established criteria.
Przedmiot artykułu stanowią nowe metody promocji czytelnictwa realizowane poza biblioteką, w przestrzeni miejskiej, często z inicjatywy bibliotekarzy lub we współpracy z nimi. Celem jest dokonanie systematycznego przeglądu nowych form promocji, takich jak: street art, flash mob, performance, gry terenowe i inne. Zwrócono szczególną uwagę na koncepcję reklamy ambientowej, przywołując przykłady jej stosowania w promocji filmów i gier video oraz prezentując potencjał dla promocji czytelnictwa. Zastosowano metodę analizy i krytyki piśmiennictwa oraz analizę stron WWW. Pod uwagę wzięto prace opublikowane w języku polskim i angielskim w latach 2010–2015 w kluczowych czasopismach bibliotekarskich. Uzupełniająco przeszukano również zasoby sieciowe - strony największych polskich i zagranicznych bibliotek publicznych oraz blogi bibliotekarzy. W rezultacie zaprezentowano nowe metody promocji czytelnictwa wykorzystujące potencjał przestrzeni publicznej oraz dokonano ich typologii według przyjętych kryteriów.

The reading practices of women, mediated by a prison library in Portugal, constituted an interesting case study. In Santa Cruz do Bispo prison, female prisoners were increasingly aged and excluded from social groups, less literate, and educated. Many were first-time library users and some were beginning readers. This research aimed to understand their reading practices and preferences, their self-assigned meanings, and the roles of reading in prison. Having become aware that industrial literature romance novels were the most requested items, a critical comparative analysis of the three most requested titles was contrasted with readers’ favorite passages to foster a deeper understanding of their preferences and sustain an integrated analysis. Furthermore, a consensualized definition of a “good read” is presented. The results from ethnography and interviews to readers and staff are analyzed taking into account class, gender, ethnicity, age, occupation, and education of the detainees. Conclusions address the fact that although the prison’s educational service and imprisonment conditions propitiated an increase in reading generally, the library was oriented by educational targets and irresponsive to certain demands expressed by readers. Secondly, women readers were using the available top-selling romance novels to sustain their introspective and prospective work, while reckoning with their past and planning for their future. In addition to this reflexive stance, escapist entertainment and knowledge building were important reading purposes.

Czytająca wnukom babcia i dziadek opowiadający historie wydają się tradycyjnym obrazkiem, ale we współczesnym świecie takie sytuacje zdarzają się coraz rzadziej. Istnieją pewne projekty zachęcające starsze osoby do czytania dzieciom w przedszkolach i w bibliotekach publicznych, jednocześnie możemy obserwować coraz więcej przykładów, kiedy młodzi ludzie czytają starszym w domach późnej starości. Wszystkie międzypokoleniowe możliwości czytania mogłyby pogłębić radość z interpersonalnego czytania na głos. W artykule przedstawiono jeden ze słoweńskich projektów poświęcony międzypokoleniowemu czytaniu, którego celem jest zbliżenie młodych ludzi i dorosłych, starszych osób poprzez czytanie tej samej literatury młodzieżowej. Coraz większa liczba “międzypokoleniowych” powieści, książek obrazkowych, poezji itp. Poświęcana jest czytelnikom w każdym wieku, a z drugiej strony rośnie starzejąca się populacja obywateli (jak wszędzie w rozwiniętym świecie). Musimy poznać i zrozumieć siebie nawzajem, więc być może książki, czytanie oraz wymiana myśli i poglądów mogą wspierać budowę relacji między oboma grupami.
It is somehow traditional a grandma reads to small children and a grandpa tells stories, but in real life these are rare opportunities nowadays. There are some projects encouraging elder people to read to children in kindergartens and in public libraries. There are more and more examples that young people read to elder people in retirement homes. All intergenerational reading possibilities could deepen the enjoyment of loud interpersonal reading. The paper presents one of the Slovene projects of the intergenerational reading that tends to bring together young people and grown-up, elder people reading the same young adults literature. There is a growing number of «intergenerational» novels, picture-books, poetry etc. Dedicated  to readers of all ages, and on the other hand aging population is increasing (as everywhere in the developed world). We need to know and understand each other, so maybe books, reading and exchanging thoughts and opinions can build one of the bridges among us.

Copies of early-printed books have been of interest to to-day’s collectors and researchers not only for their material aspects (names of publishers and places of printing, fonts and composition, number of known copies etc.), but also because they bear signs of their often erratic history following their publication. The path followed by a particular copy of an early-printed book is reflected in its general state as an object (for instance the state of its binding), but also in its internal aspect. On the pages of a copy of an early-printed book, annotations, drawings doodles or graphics testify to the intimate relationship that its owners entertained with it. To better understand how owners dealt with copies of the books they possessed, this paper examines the annotations found in copies of some books that belong to the Carmelite convent in Cracow. We hope to bring to the attention of scholars, copies of works of Galen housed in this library, and primarily to set a perspective on how books were read by cultured individuals of in the 16th century period. To do so, we analyse copies of the 1507 Venice edition of the Articella and a copy of Latin edition of Galien (Iuntae, Venice, 1531). We attempt to identify the intellectual perspectives from which cultured readers approached such texts in the 16th century.

Opis:
Głównym celem artykułu jest odpowiedź na pytanie, w jaki sposób czasopisma dla dzieci mogą być narzędziem edukacji medialnej, rozumianej jako wychowanie do odbioru środków przekazu, ale również jako budowanie nawyku czytelnictwa prasy i książek. Hipoteza: W literaturze przedmiotu powszechnie przyjmuje się, że prasa dla dzieci może być efektywnym narzędziem budowania nawyku czytelnictwa. Jednak ten segment rynku prasowego, podobnie jak pozostałe, musi zmagać się z tendencjami do spadku czytelnictwa prasy i książki w zderzeniu z ekspansją mediów cyfrowych. Metodologia: Autor analizuje dane zastane (m.in. raporty z badań) oraz opracowania naukowe z zakresu wpływu mediów, pedagogiki, edukacji medialnej oraz psychologii mediów. Artykuł ma charakter teoretyczny. Jest osadzony w dyscyplinie „nauki o komunikacji społecznej i mediach”, ale ma charakter interdyscyplinarny z uwagi na odniesienia do pedagogiki, edukacji i zagadnień technologicznych.
The main aim of the article is to answer the question of how children’s magazines may be used as tools for media education understood as educating children on how to process media, and also as instilling the habit of reading periodicals and books. Hypothesis: It is generally assumed in the scholarly literature that periodicals for children may be an effective tool in encouraging a reading habit. Unfortunately, this segment of the press market, just as all other segments, faces declining readership due to the expansion of the digital media. Methodology: An analysis the existing data (e.g. study reports) and academic analyses in terms of the impact of the media, pedagogy, media education, and media psychology. The article is theoretical in nature. It stems from the discipline of the “science of social communication and the media”, yet it offers an interdisciplinary approach, due to its references to pedagogy, education, and technology.

Opis:
Interwar period meant intensive functioning of independent Polish state authorities, also on the field of education. Legislative works concerned, among many other, matters of development of librarianship, school’s libraries modus operandi as well. Ministerial authorities prepared legal documents aimed, for example, at regulation of teachers–librarians’ work. Local authorities also aspired to form libraries in institutions that were under their supervision. Lodz didn’t belong to the lead of cities with best supplied school libraries. However, the need to collect books at schools was noticed not only by teachers alone, but also by city authorities. The school libraries were recognized as inseparable part of each school, necessary for successful completion of teaching–education processes. Lodz junior secondary schools had quite affluent libraries. During the formation process of Lodz school libraries their teachers played significant role. The Lodz teachers supported all undertakings being aimed at development of school’s libraries and popularizing the reading among secondary school children.
Lata międzywojenne to okres intensywnych działań władz niepodległego Państwa także na polu oświaty i szkolnictwa. Prace legislacyjne dotyczyły również spraw rozwoju bibliotekarstwa, w tym szkolnego. Władze ministerialne przygotowywały akty prawne mające na celu m. in. unormowanie pracy nauczycieli–bibliotekarzy. Także władze samorządowe dążyły, by w podległych im placówkach tworzone były biblioteki. Łódź nie należała do czołówki miast z najlepiej zaopatrzonymi bibliotekami szkolnymi; jednak potrzebę gromadzenia w szkołach księgozbiorów dostrzegali nie tylko nauczyciele, ale także władze miasta. Biblioteki uznane zostały za nierozłączną część szkoły, niezbędną w realizacji procesów dydaktyczno–wychowawczych. Łódzkie gimnazja dysponowały dość zasobnymi księgozbiorami W procesie formowania księgozbiorów szkół znaczną rolę odegrało łódzkie nauczycielstwo, które wspierało wszelkie przedsięwzięcia mające na celu rozwój bibliotek szkolnych i upowszechnianie czytelnictwa wśród młodzieży szkolnej.

Opis:
The aim of the article is a review of selected literature on dyslexia published in Poland described from the historical perspective. The integral part of the review is devoted to the series Jak pomóc dziecku z dysleksją written by A. Radwańska and published by Difin in 2017–2019. This study has identified two scientific perspectives nowadays developed in Poland connected with reading and writing difficulties.
Celem artykułu jest dokonanie przeglądu wybranej literatury dotyczącej dysleksji, opublikowanej w Polsce. Opis ukazuje perspektywę historyczną badań, a jego kulminacyjnym fragmentem jest recenzja serii opublikowanej w Wydawnictwie Difin przez Annę Radwańską w latach 2017–2019 pt. Jak pomóc dziecku z dysleksją. Rozważania podsumowuje wskazanie dwóch perspektyw badawczych problematyki zaburzeń czytania i pisania, jakie rozwijane są obecnie w Polsce.
