    The aim of a refusal letter as an answer to a job application is to communicate negative information to the person who is trying to obtain a job. For the reason of the necessity to save face as well as an inconvenience of the situation, authors of refusal letters apply various strategies aiming at mitigation of the formulated refusal. The objective of the article is to present structural elements of refusal letters containing complimenting phrases, as well as an analysis of language means used in such phrases.

    Opis:
    Tadeusz Zieliński was an outstanding scholar specialising in Greek and Roman literature as well as an accomplished orator, though nowadays he is not always appreciated. The best example of his vast knowledge and oratorical talent is undoubtedly the cycle of eight lectures on the broadly conceived Antiquity. In those lectures, Zieliński discussed the ancient world in terms of scientific research, its influence on modern culture and its role in educating the young generation. In order to ensure the effectiveness of his message, he first had to win favour with the audience. His prestige in the scientific community greatly facilitated it, while the numerous rhetorical and linguistic devices he used guaranteed that his persuasive message brought the expected results. Coherent and logical composition, clear and vivid language, topoi, expressions and phrases aimed at reducing the distance between the sender and the receiver, adjusting the style to the audience, numerous examples, references to authoritative figures, among other things, played a vital role here. Such devices were as important as the contents of the text itself as they ensured the effectiveness of the communication.

    The main aim of this paper is to present the various approaches to politeness research which have been documented by researchers from all over the word in last fifty years. In the first part of the article the author compares the most well-known and influential theories of politeness. Then the critique of these approaches is presented in details. In the next step the author examines new theories that arise after the discussion. These approaches are called postmodern and discursive. Part three of the paper focus on the concepts that presents different idea than postmodern or discursive paradigm. In the last part the author gives examples of the newest approaches to the research that studied linguistic politeness and also presents the impact these may have on Polish language glottodidactics.
    Głównym celem artykułu jest przedstawienie ewolucji teorii grzeczności językowej na przestrzeni ostatnich pięćdziesięciu lat. W pierwszej części zestawiono ze sobą najważniejsze założenia trzech klasycznych teorii grzeczności językowej. W kolejnym kroku dokładnie opisano krytykę tych pierwszych podejść oraz zaprezentowano teorie, które powstały na gruncie tej dyskusji. Nazwano je postmodernistycznymi i dyskursywnymi. Cześć trzecia koncentruje się na przywołaniu nazwisk badaczy, którzy wychodzą poza paradygmat postmodernistyczny i dyskursywny. W czwartej części przywołano najnowsze podejścia do badań nad grzecznością językową i przedstawiono, jaki wpływ mają one na badania w obszarze glottodydaktyki polonistycznej.

    Głównym celem artykułu jest przedstawienie opinii młodych Ukraińców na temat polskiej grzeczności językowej. Do zebrania materiału badawczego wykorzystano dwie techniki badawcze: wywiad swobodny oraz ankietę internetową. Projekt zrealizowano zgodnie z podejściem interkulturowym – to cudzoziemcy mieszkający w Polsce opisywali polską grzeczność. W zebranym materiale udało się odnaleźć większość praw rządzących systemem polskiej grzeczności językowej. Z wypowiedzi Ukraińców wyłania się obraz Polaków, którzy są na co dzień uprzejmi i chętni do pomocy. Największą trudność na początku pobytu w Polsce zwykle sprawiało respondentom poprawne posługiwanie się zwrotami adresatywnymi, dlatego to zagadnienie opatrzono dłuższym komentarzem. Analiza przeprowadzona w tym artykule może ułatwić praktykę dydaktyczną, gdyż zwraca się tu uwagę na elementy trudne dla uczących się.
    The main aim of this article is to present the young Ukrainians’ opinion of Polish linquistic politeness. Two research techniques were used to collect research material: an unstructured in person interview and an online survey. The project was carried out in accordance with an intercultural approach – foreigners living in Poland described Polish politeness. In the collected material, most of the rules governing the system of Polish linguistic politeness were found. The Ukrainians’ statements showed a picture of Poles who are polite and willing to help. The greatest difficulty for respondents at the beginning of their stay in Poland was usually the correct use of addressing expressions and honorifics, which is why this issue was provided with a longer commentary. The analysis carried out in this article may facilitate teaching practice because it draws attention to elements that are difficult for learners.

    The present study investigates the cross-linguistic differences in the use of so-called T/V forms (e.g. French tu and vous, German du and Sie, Russian ty and vy) in ten European languages from different language families and genera. These constraints represent an elusive object of investigation because they depend on a large number of subtle contextual features and social distinctions, which should be cross-linguistically matched. Film subtitles in different languages offer a convenient solution because the situations of communication between film characters can serve as comparative concepts. I selected more than two hundred contexts that contain the pronouns you and yourself in the original English versions, which are then coded for fifteen contextual variables that describe the Speaker and the Hearer, their relationships and different situational properties. The creators of subtitles in the other languages have to choose between T and V when translating from English, where the T/V distinction is not expressed grammatically. On the basis of these situations translated in ten languages, I perform multivariate analyses using the method of conditional inference trees in order to identify the most relevant contextual variables that constrain the T/V variation in each language.

    This editorial to the special issue of RiL dedicated to relevance theory and problems of intercultural communication addresses the general requirements that a theory of communication must meet to be applicable to the analysis of intercultural communication. Then it discusses criticism levelled against Grice’s theory of conversational implicature and Brown and Levinson’s theory of politeness on the grounds that these theories were not universal enough to be applied to all data. Finally, it offers some remarks on the applicability of relevance theory to intercultural pragmatics.

    W artykule omówiono wkład pięciu różnych podejść w ramach analizy dyskursu w interpretację i zrozumienie tego samego materiału empirycznego. Podejścia wybrane do porównania to analiza konwersacyjna, interakcyjna socjolingwistyka, teoria grzeczności, krytyczna analiza dyskursu i psychologia dyskursywna. Dane empiryczne stanowi dziewięciominutowe nagranie dźwiękowe nieformalnej interakcji w miejscu pracy. W artykule zostaną ze sobą zestawione różne sposoby analizy, zostaną również omówione teoretyczne i metodologiczne implikacje używania poszczególnych podejść.
    This article explores the contributions that five different approaches to discourse analysis can make to interpreting and understanding the same piece of data. Conversation analysis, interactional sociolinguistics, politeness theory, critical discourse analysis, and discursive psychology are the approaches chosen for comparison. The data is a nine-minute audio recording of a spontaneous workplace interaction. The analyses are compared, and the theoretical and methodological implications of the different approaches are discussed.

    W artykule przedstawiono, jaki stosunek do norm grzecznościowych prezentują korektorzy i redaktorzy językowi konwersujący ze sobą w zawodowej grupie dyskusyjnej (najbardziej reprezentatywnej spośród grup skupiających redaktorów i korektorów) na portalu społecznościowym Facebook. Badany materiał pochodzi przede wszystkim z kwietnia i maja 2021 r. i obejmuje zwroty adresatywne oraz formuły powitalne — ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem formuły witam. Ponadto omówiono preferencje przedstawicieli tej grupy zawodowej dotyczące wyboru typu relacji (na ty czy na pan/pani). Analiza materiału pozwala wysnuć wniosek, że członkowie samopomocowej społeczności redaktorów i korektorów chętniej niż w innych grupach wybierają relację na pan/pani (choć nadal można obserwować przewagę relacji na ty) i najczęściej rezygnują z tradycyjnych powitań i formuł adresatywnych.
    This article presents how the politeness norms are followed by proofreaders and language editors who are talking to each other in a professional discussion group (the most representative among the groups for editors and proofreaders in Poland) on the Facebook social networking site. The material comes mainly from April and May 2021 and includes addressative forms and greetings formulas — with particular emphasis on the phrase witam. Moreover, there are discussed the preferences of this professional group’s representatives regarding the choice of the type of relationship (per ty ‘you’ or per pan/pani ‘sir/madam’). The analysis of the material allows us to conclude that members of the self-help community are more likely than in other groups to choose the per pan/pani relationship (although still with the advantage of the per ty relationship) and most often give up traditional greetings and addressative formulas.

    W artykule analizuje się konstrukcje referujące (nieadresatywne), w których występują wyrazy pan lub pani jako – teoretycznie rzecz ujmując – analityczne wykładniki honoryfikatywności rzeczownika, typu pan prezes, pan (Zbigniew) Gołąb. Różne warianty strukturalne tych konstrukcji stanowią wyraźną cechę tekstów informacyjnych prasy polskojęzycznej ukazującej się obecnie na Ukrainie, np.: Ambasador RP na Ukrainie pan Jacek Kluczkowski; Pan Mieczysław Maciejak, przewodniczący Stowarzyszenia; Pan Konsul Generalny Wojciech Gałązka; Pan Janik – Konsul Generalny RP w Łucku; Pan Ambasador; Pan Tomasz Janik; Pani Tymoszenko; Pani Julia. W tekstach narracyjnych polszczyzny ogólnej wyrazy pan / pani w podobnych strukturach są zbędne, a czasami bywają wręcz wyzyskiwane w tzw. schematach pozbawienia tytułu wprowadzających deprecjację (np. Nowy minister zdrowia, pan Arłukowicz, wie, jak uzdrowić [...]). Badania wykazują, że w prasowym dyskursie polonijnym – w odróżnieniu od ogólnopolskiego – konstrukcje referujące z wyrazami pan / pani pełnią inne funkcje: potęgowanie grzeczności przejawiające się w zwiększeniu szacunku wobec nazywanej osoby; wprowadzanie do przestrzeni komunikacyjnej osobliwej atmosfery „polskości”; tworzenie iluzji obecności desygnatu w sytuacji komunikacyjnej powodujące swoistą hybrydyzację gatunku prasowego. Jednakże precyzyjne określenie funkcji analizowanych struktur w prasie polonijnej nie zawsze jest możliwe, częste są bowiem niekonsekwencje w wyrażaniu „lokalnej nadgrzeczności”. Stosowność tych swoistych struktur grzecznościowcyh może także być wątpliwa, jeśli w roli odbiorcy komunikatu wystąpi rodzimy użytkownik polszczyzny w kraju. Zatem „zderzenie” dyskursów prasy ogólnopolskiej i mniejszościowej pod względem analizowanego aspektu etykiety językowej może skutkować zakłóceniami komunikacyjnymi, niezamierzonymi ze strony nadawcy reprezentującego środowisko polskie na Ukrainie.
    The author of the article analyses the referential structures (which are not used as forms of address), including words pan or pani as (from the theoretical point of view) analytical forms of noun honorification (as pan prezes, pan [Zbigniew] Gołąb). Different structural variants of these constructions are characteristic of information texts in the Polish language press, which comes out nowadays in Ukraine, for example: Ambasador RP na Ukrainie pan Jacek Kluczkowski; Pan Mieczysław Maciejak, przewodniczący Stowarzyszenia; Pan Konsul Generalny Wojciech Gałązka; Pan Janik – Konsul Generalny RP w Łucku; Pan Ambasador; Pan Tomasz Janik; Pani Tymoszenko; Pani Julia. In the Polish narrative texts words pan / pani in similar structures are unnecessary and sometimes even occur in so-called schemes of title depriving in the meaning of deprecation (for example: Nowy minister zdrowia, pan Arłukowicz, wie, jak uzdrowić [...]). The research shows that in the Polish community press discourse, which is distinct from the Polish nationwide discourse, referential constructions with words pan / pani are used in other functions: heightening of politeness manifested in the increased respect for the mentioned person; introduction of peculiar atmosphere of “polishness” to the communication area; creation of the illusion of the presence of the designatum in the communicative situation causing specific hybridization of the press genre. However, the precise definition of the functions of the structures in the Polish community press is not always possible because of the frequent inconsistencies in the “local overpoliteness” expression. The relevance of these specific polite structures may also be questionable if in the role of the recipient of a message is native Polish language speaker from Poland. Therefore, the “clash” of Polish nationwide and minority press discourses as regards the analyzed aspect of the linguistic etiquette may lead communicative misunderstanding, which are unintended by the sender, who represents the Polish community in Ukraine.

    Opis:
        This article discusses the modes of defining cultural content in teaching Polish as a foreign language. It proposes strategies for introducing cultural knowledge and knowledge about culture in the practice of teaching Polish as a non-native language. It seems appropriate to offer a division into: The cultural semantics of lexemes, set phrases and expressions; The culture (meaning the correct use) of expression and the linguistic norm; and Culture content and areas conveyed to foreigners through the language they are learning. This discussion fits the debate regarding the language which we teach to foreigners. In it, researchers have offered examples of semantic distortions (mostly shifts), and the dangers of private or rather extra-curricular linguistic contact with a language’s native users. It also carries reflections on linguistic regionalisation and its presence in the practice of teaching Polish as a non-native language.  
    Artykuł dotyczy sposobów definiowania treści kulturowych w nauczaniu języka polskiego jako obcego. Są w nim zaproponowane strategie wprowadzania wiedzy kulturowej i wiedzy o kulturze w praktykę glottodydaktyczną. Wskazane jest (istotne zdaniem autora) rozróżnienie na:1. semantykę kulturową leksemów, zwrotów i wyrażeń;2. kulturę wypowiedzi i normę językową;3. treści i obszary kulturowe przekazywane cudzoziemcom za pośrednictwem nauczanego języka. Rozważania wpisują się w nurt dyskusji dotyczącej języka, którego nauczamy cudzoziemców. Przywoływane są w nim przykłady zaburzeń (zwłaszcza przesunięć) semantycznych, niebezpieczeństwa wynikające z prywatnych, a raczej pozalekcyjnych kontaktów językowych z jego naturalnymi użytkownikami. Zawarto również refleksję dotyczącą regionalizacji językowych i ich obecności w praktyce glottodydaktycznej.
