Opis:
Piotr Skarga has played an important role in the history of the reception of Bogurodzica editing three times and interpreting this song. He reprinted this poem in Żywoty Świętych (1579), in Kazania o siedmiu sakramentach (1600) and Kazania przygodnych (1610). Besides these editorial actions he has developed a separate sermon about Bogurodzica. As a publisher he tried to reprint the lyrics faithfully but he was not a passive editor, who dispassionately, with a distance stalks to the form of the text. He was an active didactic, who aimed this old artwork written in medieval Polish to make fully understandable to the modern reader. Therefore, he added the informative and instructive comments on the Bogurodzica. Skarga wanted to inform the reader about life, work, and the way to holiness of Bishop Wojciech, the alleged author of the Bogurodzica, and give the editorial explanation to the poem; to popularize and extend its vitality. Skarga’s comment has also Counter-Reformative overtone. Jesuit preacher by spreading the cult of Mary emphasized the ideological Polish religiosity after Trident, unchanged from the baptism of Poland. Bogurodzica was to provide the fact that from the beginning of Christianity, there was half an ancient hymn that proclaims devotions to Maria, a tradition which continued uninterrupted despite the spread of different faith doctrines. Skarga as an interpreter of the Bogurodzica explains this poem in a simple way, fully comprehensible to his contemporary readers, however, do not trivialize the depth of theological interpretation of this monumental poem. He used a simple style, avoiding ornamentation and stylistic tropes. He turned out to be a discerning commentator of this venerable monument of our poetry, excellent didactics who proclaim in a clear and accessible way The Word of God, closed in a difficult to understand medieval text.

Opis:
Peter Koslowski’s project of ‘ethical economy’ can be understood as an effort to search for human face of late capitalism. In his perspective ‘ethical economy’ is not a simple combination and connection between economy and ethics but is a new approach which includes three fields: theory of ethical premises of economy, concept of ethics profiled towards needs of economy and ethical and economical theory of goods and cultural values. Koslowski reinterprets problems of maximization found in classical economy. He criticizes the model of homo oeconomicus as the model of a reactive man not understood as activated. According to Koslowski, economical theory of market balance also requires reinterpretation. Without assuming that teleology belongs internally to social reality and therefore to market as well, so to create environment for development of human subjectivity, there cannot exist any theory of legitimization of individualistic economic institutions which protect freedom. Without that, Koslowski claims, there can only be theory of social process authority in which the strongest reinforce their positions. Taking subjectivity and auto-referential character of a human being into consideration is the ontological basis, which allows to reach ethical dimension of decision-making processes and responsibility. By analogy, the mechanism of ‘invisible hand’ requires referring to common good. In the age of globalization ‘invisible hand’ is a source of evil.

Opis:
In this article the nature of religious violence is discussed with particular reference to the work and deeds of a Polish court preacher, Piotr Skarga. The author tries to place the aforementioned phenomenon in a wider cultural context. Drawing from a wide range of sociological and anthropological studies and proposing to understand violence not merely as an act of physical aggression, but also as a process of dehumanizing the enemy and thus making him/her liable to physical harm. The author argues that violence is intrinsic to the world of divided religious communities and can be considered by its perpetrators as an act of piety and doing God’s work. In the Polish context Piotr Skarga was one of the main representatives of this attitude.

Opis:
The text deals with the fragmentary issue of Piotr Skarga’s iconography which is the artistic legacy of the anniversaries celebrated in 1912 and 2012. The remembrance of this Jesuit’s death one hundred years ago stirred up many emotions. It was visible in, for instance, mass manifestations, books, theatre performances or the creations of fine arts. In the reality of the beginnings of the 20th century, what was important was the impact of the image created by Jan Matejko as well as its ideological, virtually mystical, background. This jubilee, celebrated one hundred years ago, has left numerous traces in the arts, some of which have not been retained to this day. The medal by Witold Bieliński; the bust sculptured by Władysław Mazur and Jan Tombiński; or the exquisite bas-relief by Luna Drexler on the Lvov Latin Cathedral were characteristic of those times. However, the level of those works is contrasted with the quality and number of creations dedicated to Skarga during the last anniversary. Both the postage stamp issued by the Polish Postal Service as well as the monument unveiled at the Warsaw Catholic School are not really original. In 2012, Skarga was mentioned most frequently on the Internet, in the forms of memes, which were often obscene and inappropriate.

Peter of Sicily, a Byzantine high official from the times of Basil I, intended to warn the Archbishop of Bulgaria against certain heretics, known as the Paulicians, as he learned during his mission to Tefrike about their plans of sending their missionaries there. His writings are regarded as the most competent source of information on the history and doctrine of the Paulicians. He also described some of their leaders, including Sergius himself. According to Peter, it was a woman with whom Sergius had had an affair who made him the devil’s tool. He accepted the name of Tychicos and passed himself off as a disciple of Paul the Apostle. For 34 years he was the leader of the Paulicians. Peter admits that Sergius was successful in winning followers and at the same time, besides making false statements, accuses him of selling Christians into slavery to barbarians and of collaboration with the Muslims. In the end, however, he was supposed to have an argument with another heresiarch, Baanes, which would lead to a break among the Paulicians. Sergius is colourfully described as an enemy of the Cross, a voice of impiety, a lover of darkness and a wolf in sheep’s clothing, who skilfully pretends to be a man of virtue but has deceived many. Although he himself was murdered in 834/835, his work was continued by disciples of his.

Ethnomethodologists have emphasized the pragmatic and contextual nature of description as a variety of social practice, and have suggested the ramifications of this insight for the methodology and philosophy of the social sciences. However, ethnomethodologists have thereby invited difficult questions about the moral and analytic status of their own descriptions. Drawing on Atkinson’s study of suicide verdicts and Coulter’s writings on schizophrenia, ethnomethodological scholarship is shown to display the possibility and promise of disinterested description, even when the subject matter involves the evaluation of problematic actions and identities. The combination of Wittgensteinian logical grammar and empirical studies of natural language use, suggested by Coulter, is presented as especially relevant and remarkable for purposes of studying social practices including describing, naming, categorizing, classifying, labeling, diagnosing, reaching a verdict, and kindred practices of language use conceived as varieties of practical action.

This paper uncovers new complexity for Shakespearean studies in examining three anecdotes overlooked in related historiography—the first Indian baptism in Britain, that of Peter Pope, in 1616, and its extrapolation in Victorian history as Calibanesque; the tale of Catherine Bengall, an Indian servant baptised in 1745 in London and left to bear an illegitimate child, before vanishing from Company records (like Virginia Woolf’s invention Judith Shakespeare vanishing in Shakespeare’s London); and the forgotten John Talbot Shakespear, a Company official in early nineteenth-century Bengal and descendant of William Shakespeare. I argue that the anecdotal links between Peter, Caliban, Catherine, Judith, Shakespear and Shakespeare should be seen as Jungian effects of non-causal “synchronic” reality or on lines of Benoit Mandelbrot’s conception of fractals (rough and self-regulating geometries of natural microforms). Although anecdotes and historemes get incorporated into historical establishmentarianism, seeing history in a framework of fractals fundamentally resists such appropriations. This poses new challenges for Shakespearean historiography, while underscoring distinctions between Shakespeareanism (sociological epiphenomena) and Shakespeare (the man himself).

The language of the Moldavian books and chancery documents written during the reign of Peter Rareş (1527–1538, 1541–1546) shows an unneglectable variability depending on the purpose, addressee and format of the texts. Using all kinds of preserved texts from this period, we have tried to describe this variability focusing on the texts written in the Cyrillic script. These texts are evaluated according to three criteria: spelling, morphosyntax and vocabulary. The most prestigious variety was the Trinovitan (Tărnovo) variety of Middle Church Slavonic. Its shape in the texts, belonging to the common Church Slavonic legacy, shows the lowest impact of the Moldavian linguistic environment. The original Church Slavonic bookish texts composed in Moldavia (Macarie’s Chronicle, Enkomion to St John the New, colophons and inscriptions) show a variable proportion of Moldavian spelling and morphosyntactic markers. The chancery documents can be characterised by blending of Church Slavonic and Ruthenian (Ukrainian-based) elements. Except the Ruthenian-based documents addressed to Poland, the chancery documents are basically Church Slavonic shaped with Ruthenian infiltrations on the level of some fixed formulas, function words and few lexical items. Moreover, Slavonic letters sent to Transylvania show tiny Wallachian Slavonic influence, manifested by forms of Serbian chancery origin. Monastery charters combine CS-shaped Ruthenian formulas with Trinovitan Church Slavonic formulas, partly shared with colophons and inscriptions. Thus, the Moldavian written legacy shares common elements both with the Wallachian milieu (e.g. Romanian Cyrillic spelling of proper names, Romanian impact on morphosyntax, specific terminology etc.) as well as with a broader Ruthenian area (mainly the eastern part of the Polish-Lithuanian Union).

The article analyses the image of the first Russian Emperor created in Gavrila Derzhavin’s poetry, from the early poems of the 1770s to the late works written during the Patriotic War of 1812. Only some of the poems directly address Peter and his epoch. Mostly, the image of Peter I is auxiliary and in terms of the correlation of image and idea – usually emblematic. References to the tsar often correlate with reconstructing the stylistic context of Mikhail Lomonosov’s poetry, with continuing the formation of a special literary mythology, which presents Peter as a demiurge who created New Russia, and Catherine II as a continuator of his work, sometimes even surpassing her great predecessor in her achievements. In terms of genre, Derzhavin’s works which feature the image of Peter or include stylistically significant references to him, in some cases tend towards the synthesis of arts: musicality (hymn, ode) or ekphrasis. In creating the image of Peter I, the poet relies on the Western European context but also on generic and stylistic achievements of Old Russian literature. Special attention is paid to the poem “On the Prophecy of Simeon of Polotsk and Dmitry of Rostov at the Birth of Peter the Great”, which has not attracted the attention of literary scholars so far.

The Theater Is always Dying traces the resilience of live theatrical performance in the face of competing performative forms like cinema, television and contemporary streaming services on personal, hand-held devices and focuses on theater’s ability to continue as a significant cultural, community and intellectual force in the face of such competition. To echo Beckett, we might suggest, then, that theater may be at its best at its dying since its extended demise seems self-regenerating. Whether or not you “go out of the theatre more human than when you went in”, as Ariane Mnouchkin suggests, or whether you’ve had a sense that you’ve been part of, participated in a community ritual, a Dionysia, or whether or not you’ve felt that you’ve been affected by a performative, an embodied intellectual and emotional human experience may determine how you judge the state of contemporary theater. You may not always know the answer to those questions immediately after the theatrical encounter, or ever deliberately or consciously, but something, nonetheless, may have been taking its course. You may emerge “more human than when you went in”.
