    In this paper we propose a more explicit framework for definition and evaluation of objectivity and (inter)subjectivity in the modality domain. In the proposed operational framework, we make a basic distinction between the modality notions that serve an ideational function (i.e., dynamic modal notions) and those with an interpersonal function (i.e., deontic and epistemic evaluations). The modality notions with ideational and interpersonal functions are content and person-oriented, respectively. While all dynamic modal notions are characterized by objectivity, deontic and epistemic modal notions may display a degree of (inter)subjectivity depending on their embedding context. Our main claim is that (inter)subjectivity can hardly be argued to be the inherent property of certain modality forms and types, but rather it is essentially a contextual effect. We functionally-operationally define (inter)subjectivity as the degree of sharedness an evaluator attributes to an epistemic/deontic evaluation and its related evidence/deontic source. (Inter)subjectivity is realized by (at least) one or a combination of three contextual factors, viz. the embedding syntactic pattern, the linguistic context and the extralinguistic context of a modality marker. Since both descriptive and performative modal evaluations involve a degree of (inter)subjectivity, performativity, which refers to speaker’s current commitment to his evaluation, is viewed as an independent dimension within modal evaluations and plays no part in the expression of (inter)subjectivity.

    Objectivity is a principle widely acknowledged and honoured in contemporary society. Rather than treating objectivity as an a priori defined category to be tested empirically, I refer to the construction of objectivity as it is accomplished in practice as “objectivity work” and consider how Swedish prosecutors in interviews make and communicatively realize (i.e. “make real”) its claims. In analyzing two facets of objectivity work – maintaining objectivity and responses to objectivity violations – seven mechanisms are identified: appeals to (1) regulation, (2) duty, and (3) professionalism; responses to violations by (4) incantations of objectivity, (5) corrections, (6) proclamation by contrast, and (7) appeals to human fallibility. Directions for future research emphasize cross-cultural and crossoccupational comparisons, not only within the judiciary as objectivity is of a general concern in any area where disinterested truths are claimed. The concept of objectivity work allows one to study how various actors bring principle into everyday life.

    The mediatisation of political communication indicates two main functions of the mass media: they report on events from the world of politics and create the images of political actors in the eyes of the public. I attempt to answer the question: can one talk about respecting the basic principles of journalistic ethics (the truth and the objectivity principles) in the times of the mediatisation of the public sphere? The theme of the article applies to terrorism, which is a form of political communication, having its own special expression. The activities of terrorist organisations influence the actions of the leaders of political life, citizens and the mass media. The research material consisted of Polish opinion-making weeklies Newsweek Polska and Polityka and national dailies in their printed versions: Gazeta Wyborcza and Rzeczpospolita. The time frame covered a period from 1 November 2015 to 11 December 2015. The topic of the article was treated as a case study.

    For the New Objectivity art, both literature and paintings, urban reality played a significant role. The aesthetics of the New Objectivity, movement that bloomed in the 20s and 30s, was defined through urban issues. This tendency can be observed primarily in the so-called Zeitroman that became a topic of interest for German literary studies earlier. In contrast to the prose, the New Objectivity poetry was rarely an object of studies. In the article, selected urban verses are analysed and connected with the New Objectivity paintings on a modernist background.

    The paper summarizes the author’s experience of conducting economic scientific research. Economic scientific research is understood as both an analysis of economic phenomena and research purchased on the market of research services. The former are not subject to ethical dilemmas. It is a professional approach backed by sound economic theory that is important. The latter, regardless of who purchases research services, pose a risk of ethical dilemmas and conflicts of interest. The area of potential risk is connected to expectations of organizations purchasing research services. In most cases organizations are interested to receive objective assessments or recommendation necessary to take decisions. Ethical conflict appears when the destination of research is lobbing or a company’s image creation. The results of research may be used as an instrument of competition. It is thus vital that a research organization should judge the ethical dimension of undertaken research tasks. Research projects being socially beneficial should be definitely undertaken. In controversial cases, the conviction of the rightfulness in the ethical dimension ought to be decisive. In all cases the principal rule should be aiming at achieving scientifically objective assessments and opinions.

    Several cases have surfaced in the past two decades where the photojournalists associated with some of the most respected and trusted news organizations have been accused of altering the news photos. During the same time, the developments in the digital cameras and editing software have put the image altering technology into the hands of all practicing journalists and journalism students. This paper explores two, somewhat connected, issues: objectivity in photojournalism and ethics of altering photographic images. The paper discusses objectivity in journalism in general and photojournalism to address the question: Can a photojournalist use a camera to record reality in an objective manner? Since the photographers have altered (retouched) images from the very beginning of photography, where are the ethical boundaries of image alteration for the photojournalists?

    Artykuł przedstawia Deborę Vogel (1900–1942) jako jedną z najważniejszych krytyczek i teoretyczek sztuki lat trzydziestych XX wieku. Po polsku oraz w jidysz stworzyła ona system, w którym sztuka jawi się jako poetycko-programowa reakcja na rzeczywistość. Jest ona elitarna, ale też ściśle związana z codziennością. Jest niezbędna dla życia, ale też jest „samym życiem”, w sensie banalnej i wiecznej ballady. Za tą konstrukcją myślową kryje się malarstwo Marca Chagalla. To na przykładzie jego obrazów Vogel dowodzi głównej tezy awangardy o jedności formy i treści. Na tożsamość życia i sztuki Vogel spogląda przez pryzmat aktualności rozumianej nie jako manifestowanie poglądów politycznych, lecz jako konstruowanie rzeczywistości w dziele sztuki. Punktem wyjścia jest dla lwowskiej intelektualistki estetyka Hegla, od której stopniowo przesuwa się ku dialektyce materialistycznej, rozwijając m. in. tezy Lu Märten, pionierki estetyki marksistowskiej. Poetyka życia oraz koncepcje sztuki były u Vogel szeroko zakorzenione w filozofii, m.in. w teorii subiektywnego postrzegania Jakoba von Uexkülla. W artykule omówiona zostaje jego koncepcja koła funkcjonalnego, jak i mająca duży wpływ na artystów awangardowych teza, iż rzeczywistość stanowi dla indywiduum wyłącznie konstrukcję własnych doznań zmysłowych. Na koniec stawiane są pytania dotyczące znaczenia myśli Bergsona i Simmla dla rozumienia sztuki w ujęciu proponowanym przez Deborę Vogel.
    In this article, Debora Vogel (1900–1942) is depicted as one of the most important art critics and theorists of the 1930s. In Polish as well as in Yiddish she designed a set of ideas both elitist and, at the same time, most tightly related to everyday-life in which art was considered essential to life and „life” itself – in the sense of a banal and eternal ballad. Behind this thought we see, quite substantially, the art of Marc Chagall. His paintings served Vogel as proof of the main thesis of avant-gardism that content equals form. The equal status of life and art is researched by Vogel through the lens of up-to-dateness – something she comprehended as a construction of reality in her work, not as an art manifesto or an expression of political views. Starting from Hegel’s aesthetics, the Lemberg-based intellectual moved on to materialist dialectics and became a follower of Lu Märten, the pioneer of Marxist aesthetics. Vogel’s poetics of life and her conceptions of art were versatile, rooted in philosophy, i.a. in Jakob von Uexküll’s theory of subjective perception. The latter’s conception of a functional circle contributing to a turn in the perception of the avant-garde, is reviewed in the article. Finally, several questions are put forth referring to the relevance of Henri Bergson’s and Georg Simmel’s thoughts for Vogel’s comprehension of art.

    Ducha nauki tworzą takie wartości akademickie, jak bezstronność w myśleniu, reguły logiczne, tolerancja w sprawach naukowych. Śledząc trzy ścieżki etnograficzne – obserwując własne poczynienia badawcze, wskazuję, że o duchu nauki stanowi również tożsamość osoby badacza. Konsekwencją potraktowania tożsamości osoby na równi z wiedzą obiektywną jest zawieszenie bezwarunkowej obiektywności. Analiza własnych ścieżek badawczych stanowi narzędzie służące do ograniczenia niedoskonałości związanych z terenem badawczym i budowania warunkowej obiektywności. Po drugie, ścieżki etnograficzne stanowią ilustrację szczegółowych problemów (analizy setek zdjęć zarchiwizowanych w bazie internetowej projektu badawczego Niewidzialne Miasto; interpretacji subiektywnych przeżyć widzów festiwalu teatralno-muzycznego oraz doświadczenia badacza jednocześnie jako tubylca, jak i obcego), z którymi musiałem się zmierzyć w trakcie badań.
    Such academic values as impartiality of thinking, logical rules, tolerance in scientific matters define the spirit of science. Following the ethnographer’s path and looking at my own research, I point out that a person’s identity is an important part of this spirit. The consequence of treating the identity of a person equally with the objective knowledge is the suspension of unconditional objectivity. In addition, the ethnographer’s path is a tool for reducing the imperfection associated with the field of study, as well as for building conditional objectivity. Secondly, the ethnographer’s path facilitates illustrating particular problems I had to face during my research (e.g., analyses of hundreds of photographs archived in the database of the research project Invisible City; interpretation of subjective experiences of spectators of the Malta Festival Poznan, as well as their participation in culture, and interpretation of experiences of the researcher – both as a native and as a stranger).
