    Opis:
    Tourism has become a common phenomenon, very important for various reasons, especially for developing regions and countries, and which in consequence has been perceived as positive. However, increasingly commonly works have cast a slightly different look. Tourism leads to a temporarily increased number of people in a relatively small area, and contributes to the introduction of ‘strangers’ to local communities which can lead to problems such as crime. On the other hand, a higher risk of being a victim may lead to the reduced attractiveness of a given destination. A small number of studies in this field draw attention to this, concentrating on a general outline of their interdependence but specific urban tourist areas are rarely the subject of research. This review covers various works on the relationship between tourism and crime.

    Opis:
    The article has a character of the review and concerns Polish publications on human security in the city. It begins with distinction of research directions in crime geography and the review of definitions of the sense of security. Next, selected Polish publications on the human security in the city and their results are presented. The following issues are discussed in the paper: 1) good and bad neighborhoods as a spatial stereotypes, 2) a sense of security vs. the type of building area, 3) a sense of security in the public places, 4) a sense of security in the neighborhood, 5) a sense of security vs. time of day, and 6) a sense of security vs. socio-demographic characteristics.
    Praca ma charakter przeglądowy i dotyczy polskich publikacji podejmujących problematykę poczucia bezpieczeństwa człowieka w przestrzeni miasta. Analizowano następujące zagadnienia: 1) dobre i złe dzielnice jako stereotypy przestrzenne, 2) poczucie bezpieczeństwa a typ zabudowy, 3) poczucie bezpieczeństwa w miejscach publicznych, 4) poczucie bezpieczeństwa w sąsiedztwie, 5) poczucie bezpieczeństwa a pora dnia oraz 6) poczucie bezpieczeństwa a cechy demograficzno-społeczne.

    Zakłada się, że zachowania obronne mieszkańców w przestrzeni miasta są reakcją na realne bądź percypowane zagrożenia tam występujące. Zagrożenia te mogą mieć charakter społeczny, materialny i socjalny, zdrowotny, związany ze stanem środowiska czy wreszcie charakter związany z bezpieczeństwem międzynarodowym. Zasadniczym celem artykułu jest opis i analiza różnych aspektów zachowań obronnych mieszkańców, które powstały wskutek różnorodnych i zróżnicowanych przestrzennie zagrożeń występujących w Łodzi.
    The issues of safety and security in modern cities are complicated and economic, social, cultural, political and spatial dimensions become very important. In this paper the socio-spatial factors affecting residents’ sense of threat and behaviour were studying. The question of “what are the most important socio-spatial factors that can affect the sense of security in cities?” was answered. The research population consisted of the residents of five different areas of the city of Łódź who were 18 years old and above of which a sample of 900 individuals were chosen. These findings showed that perceived socio-spatial threats could strongly affect the residents’ defensive behaviours.

    Opis:
    In this paper the diversity of defensive behavior of people aged over 60 years was confirmed. The author analyzes the research results with regard to two main aspects of defensive behavior: perception of the socio-spatial threats and subjective risk of victimization. In the study there was observed a significant and positive relationship between the level of insecurity, perceived risk of victimization and the number of taken defensive strategies by residents in the age 60+. There were also concluded that a sense of security and risk of victimization are a consequence of the problems identified in the socio-spatial environment of the elderly, which in turn affects their behavior.
    Przestrzeń miasta może być źródłem różnych zagrożeń, które oddziałują na poziom poczucia bezpieczeństwa jego mieszkańców. W artykule dokonano analizy różnych aspektów zachowań obronnych mieszkańców, które podejmowane są jako skutek percepcji różnorodnych i zróżnicowanych przestrzennie zagrożeń występujących w Łodzi oraz subiektywnego ryzyka wiktymizacji odczuwanego przez osoby w wieku senioralnym. Zachowania obronne mieszkańców w przestrzeni miasta, są bowiem reakcją na realne bądź percypowane zagrożenia tam występujące.

    The article adresses the problem of increasing cultural diversity of Wroclaw’s inhabitants which is a result of intensive migration of citizens of other countries to the city. For the majority of Wroclaw inhabitants experiencing cultural diversity is a new experience started in 1990’s . Based on the empirical data we try to present opinion of foreigners about their relationships with Polish inhabitants of Wroclaw as well as the attitude of Polish inhabitants of Wroclaw towards foreingers who in the growing numbers live in Wroclaw. In the light of the research data, secondary data and the review of literature one can pose a thesis about transformation of relatively ethnically and culturally homogenous Wroclaw community into multicultural community that is characterized by a positive and negative effects of thereof.
    Artykuł podnosi problem zwiększonej różnorodności kulturowej mieszkańców Wrocławia, która jest rezultatem intensywnej migracji do miasta obywateli innych państw. Dla większości mieszkańców Wrocławia doświadczanie kulturowej i etnicznej różnorodności jest nowym doświadczeniem, zapoczątkowanym w latach 90. XX wieku. Na podstawie danych empirycznych staramy się zaprezentować opinie obcokrajowców o ich relacjach z polskimi mieszkańcami Wrocławia, jak również stosunek polskich mieszkańców Wrocławia do obcokrajowców, którzy coraz liczniej zamieszkują Wrocław. W świetle danych empirycznych, danych wtórnych i przeglądu literatury można postawić tezę o transformacji względnie jednorodnej etnicznie i kulturalnie społeczności Wrocławia w wielokulturową społeczność charakteryzującą się zarówno pozytywnymi, jak i negatywnymi konsekwencjami owej wielokulturowości.

    Opis:
    This paper aims to present the main contours of Burns’s literary output which, interestingly enough, grows into a personal understanding of the collective mindset of (post)-Troubles Northern Ireland. It is legitimate, I argue, to construe her fiction (No Bones, 2001; Little Constructions, 2007; Milkman, 2018) as a body of work shedding light on certain underlying mechanisms of (post-)sectarian violence. Notwithstanding the lapse of time between 1998 and 2020, the Troubles’ toxic legacy has indeed woven an unbroken thread in the social fabric of the region. My reading of the novelist’s selected works intends to show how the local public have been fed by (or have fed themselves upon) an unjustified—maybe even false—sense of security. Burns, in that regard, has positioned herself amongst the aggregate of writers who feel anxious rather than placated, hence their persistence in returning to the roots of Northern Irish societal divisions. Burns’s writing, in the above context, though immersed in the world of the Troubles, paradoxically communicates “an idiosyncratic spatiotemporality” (Maureen Ruprecht Fadem’s phrase), namely an experience beyond the self-imposing, historical time limits. As such, it gains the ability to provide insightful commentaries on conflict-prone relations, the patterns of which can be repeatedly observed in Northern Ireland’s socio-political milieu. Overall, the main idea here is to discuss and present the narrative realm proposed by Burns as (in)determinate, liminal in terms of time and space, positioning readers between “then” and “now” of the region.
