Opis:
It is a special challenge for an individual to be the hero of his/her own life in the social conditions of reflexive modernisation. Autobiographies are not only descriptions of what happened during the life course, but they also reflect individual capacity to construct cultural identities in reflexive and reflective ways. To reflect on one’s own success, personal gains and losses have to be compared with the competitive capacities of other community members of the hierarchically structured society. Reflexive capacity is the demand to become a conscious self and culturally identified member of a social group. Selfidentity is reconstructed and coped with in light of meaningful others during certain transition periods in the life course. Life-political meaningfulness is checked by overcoming personal difficulties in order to manage life-challenges further. Self-respect gives the resources needed for overcoming alienating experiences, for controlling the risk of social exclusion and for mastering one's own life successfully. Narrative identification of self tends to produce life-heroes. But the problem considered relevant here starts from reflecting altruism with reflexive monitoring of the self. The question is whether heroic episodes of life can be narrated so that heroic everyday deeds are emphasised in autobiographies. Or is everyday heroism present only in precarious moments which escape ego-centrism because this kind of heroism can be placed only at the social margin, where surviving a difficult situation obliges one to turn unselfishly toward another?

Self-Identification
Opis:
This paper is based on the first analysis of the 25 narrative interviews collected from March to November 2018 in small local communities in the Lower Silesia Region. All narrators belong to the families that were transferred from the former Yugoslavia in 1946 to the western lands which were incorporated to Poland. The socio-cultural conditions are significant for local development, so I present some features of localism after 1989 when the state transformation processes started. Next, I discuss the narrators’ self-identity dilemmas and make an attempt to conceptualize “migrating biography” as one of the features of living in a postmodern world. The aim of the whole project, but not described in this article, is to reveal the intergenerational adult learning processes seen from the insider’s perspective, as well as to describe such lives in a psychosocial and cultural context.

Opis:
The article diagnoses prevalent tendencies in game design and styles of play, positioning players as strong, active, rational, and extraordinary characters able to change the world around them; embodying the logic of inevitable linear progress both in story and game mechanics; encouraging players to optimize their actions to achieve measurable gameplay effects. Foucault’s notion of technologies of the self is used to highlight personal identification with the playable character as a predominant style of play in narrative-based videogames. The article then examines the examples of games that challenge these established tendencies – where the playable character’s intent is made impossible to achieve, rationality of playable character is questioned, the player gets deprived of control of their character in key moments of the game or the identification with the character becomes problematized. The phenomenon is exemplified by the games Spec Ops: The Line, Heavy Rain, Actual Sunlight and The Witcher series.
