Opis:
People should be at the centre of attention within knowledge-based economics. The leaders of each enterprise ought to focus on providing the best conditions for their employees’ professional and individual development and treat them with respect in terms of their dignity and needs. In contemporary literature two notions in perceiving people in organisations are noticeable. The first one treats employees as ‘resources’ which have to be properly used or as ‘capital’ that should bring a decent return on investment. The second notion derives a lot from Christian philosophy and sees the human as a person who treats work as a way to realize his calling and thus is able to take responsibility for the decisions made and actions taken. Acting in a constantly changing environment, people have to be flexible and able to take advantage of emerging opportunities and avoid threats. Within this process it is not a matter of being a human ‘being’ but rather becoming, which means that they are incessantly developing their potential. Although it is hard to predict human behaviour, the main task for managers is to lead in a way that will help employees use their full potential for both their own and the company’s benefit.

Opis:
The inherent and inalienable human dignity is treated by the legislator as an inviolable source of human and civil freedoms and rights, the respect and protection of which is the duty of public authorities. However, in the practice of creating and applying the law, human dignity understood in this way does not constitute a uniform category, which to a large extent seems to be caused by problems of a semantic nature. The article presents the issue of the legal category of human dignity in the Polish legal system. It reflects, among other things, on the philosophical foundation of human dignity and its inviolability. The article formulates a proposal to recognize the legal category of human dignity in two ways: as ontic dignity and as dignity recognized in a substantive legal manner.

Through the analysis of theoretical views, the author attempts to establish a connection between the concept of a human nature and the idea of human rights in order to verify belonging to the human species as the main measure for choosing entities that are entitled to human rights and freedoms.

Changes in security environment after the end of Cold War and 9/11 have strongly affected our security concepts and paradigms. In the field of counter-terrorism, a serious conceptual and practical debate on the relationship between security and human rights and freedoms has begun. The goal of this paper is to reflect on this complex relationship at the conceptual level and introduce the empirical debate on this relationship in the field of civil aviation (case of introducing body scanners). The paper’s results show that the concept of human security usefully integrates the care for human rights and security of individuals. The debate on the potential introduction of body scanners on the European airports was actually a debate on the ways of providing individual human security on the airports with simultaneous concern for other human rights. The output of this debate was a compromise: body scanners can be used at the discretion of individual airports and member states, but are not an obligatory measure on all European airports.

Opis:
Ludzkie zoo z założenia przyrównać można do osobliwych zbiorów kolekcjonerskich, stanowiących upokarzające i uwłaczające godności człowieka widowiska. Niniejsza praca ma na celu przybliżenie problematyki tytułowego zagadnienia i postawienie jej jako tematu do szerszej analizy o podłożu etycznym.
The European way of classifying the world, from the Middle Ages, to the nineteenth century, set up his own, universal system by which one should determine what is valuable, and exclude what is unnecessary. In this system, naturally, the highest place in the hierarchy belonged to Europe and Europeans. As a result of such thinking assuming the superiority of one society over another, so-called "human zoos" were created, constituting the missing link in collecting at that time. We are talking about the places where living people played scenes related to life in their indigenous surroundings. This phenomenon for Europeans was a substitute for a journey to the “wild land”. For the first time, the human zoo appeared at the courts of the magnates who financed overseas expeditions to the "New World". His development is a nineteenth-century "living paintings" where for "50 cents you could travel around the world”. In principle, the human zoo can be compared to peculiar collector's collections. Undeniably, they were humiliating and degrading human dignity. This work aims to bring the topic of the problem to the attention and put it as a topic for a broader analysis on the ethical basis.

Opis:
The topic of freedom in Descartes’ philosophy is usually being connected with human freedom. It is understood in the traditional perspective of distinguishing right from wrong and truth from false. This aspect is, in my opinion, sufficiently explained. The same applies to Descartes’ ethics, connections of which with Antiquity were often mentioned. In the paper I bring up quite different issue. It rests on the question what it means that God creates the truth and what consequences it has for human validity (and necessity) of recognizing and receiving it, what is its status and, finally, how it reconfigures the relation between God and the man.

In modern economic theories, human qualities are treated as autonomous production factors, which are called “human capital”. However, in these theories, there is no description of the relationship between human capital and the man who is his “bearer,” nor an explanation of the process of that capital formation. In the thesis, the author tries to justify it as follows: Human qualities, including knowledge and skills, are an integral part of a human being, that is, they are involved in every human act. It is therefore wrong to analyze their economic significance in isolation from the whole structure of human activity. Through his action, man discovers the potential in things and relationships in the form of the possibility of using them for a particular purpose. Capital is thus realized by the human potential of things that form a system for transforming the world. In the first part, a general description of the theory of human capital will be made. In the second part, it will be criticized. In turn an attempt will be made in the third part to show the proper relationship between man and capital from the perspective of personalism.

Opis:
The main focus of this study is on understanding the importance of social dynamics of cities for attracting human capital to urban regions. The principal research question of the article is “if there is a spatial dependency on neighbouring provinces’ social environmental qualities in human capital attraction for Turkey.” It is believed that developmental disparities among regions can be overcome with a balanced distribution of human capital. In this article, first the concept and importance of human capital and its evolution throughout economic history are explained in order to emphasize the relationship between development and human capital for urban regions. The literature review consists of migration models developed and used in previous studies and recent literature that together consider human capital and its flow with spatial analysis. A review of migration models helps structure the quantitative models’ building blocks, or the concepts to be quantified. Literature that discusses human capital and spatial analysis, at the same time, guides the study in implementing the most appropriate analysis technique. The literature discussed in the paper is focused on human capital migration and urban attractiveness. Its similarity with the current study work is the focus on the relationship between urban environment components and human capital. However, the cited studies lack the “spatial/relational” approach to urban regions which means that the effects of developments in settlements neighbouring the region were ignored. The contribution which we intend to make with the current study is to adapt the spatial econometric analysis to the problem of human capital attraction. Literature review is followed by data used in the empirical part of the study, and brief information on spatial econometric analysis. Next, findings of the empirical spatial econometric analysis of Turkey’s 81 urban regions are provided. Overall, the analysis indicated that undergraduate and post-graduate migrants care about the social prosperity of the neighbouring environment of destination province. The last part concludes with an interpretation of empirical study findings and discusses relevant urban and regional policy instruments.

Inter-sectoral cooperation is one the most important elements of contemporary, place-based policy. Deriving from the conditions of the environment, also the global one, local actors should join their forces by investing in the resources determining today’s’ development – knowledge and human capital – in the most effective way. However, internal national or regional conditions, very often do not allow for efficient adaptation of development mechanisms, even when they have been already tested in other places. By narrowing the area of analysis to the relationships between territorial self-government and non-governmental organisations, this paper is an attempt to answer the question on what scale, in the Polish conditions, public-social partnerships are being built and what is their scope. Analysis concerns the institutions involved in the investment in knowledge and human capital, operating in the region of Lodz.

The status of the child in the context of contemporary socio-cultural processes that are reflected in the market is the main issue discussed in this paper. It may be surprising to concentrate on children and the market, while the sphere of economic exchange is the scene of such actions as work, production and consumption which seem to be reserved to adult members of the society. Although there are issues – such as kids advertisement and its consequences, and children’s participation in the process of buying – that are discussed, the range of problems that deserve consideration is far wider. The questions analyzed in this paper concentrate on two aspects. First of them is the influence of the market sphere on the life of children as members of the families and the society. The question that should be asked here is whether a child can and should be regarded as any other consumer, or should be protected – e.g. against controversial marketing practices. The second group of problems is connected with the objective way of treating children which leads to formation of something that can be called the markets of children”. Both these sets of issues are the stimulus to analyze the way of understanding a child and its status in the society. It is also done through taking into consideration such issues as current concepts of socialization, antipedagogy, infantilisation and adultisation that influence and shape market processes. Finally the analysis undertaken in this paper leads to an attempt to answer the question whether in the current context children are seen as persons or resources.

Opis:
This article explores the personal account titled Man meets dog ([1949] 2002) by an outstanding ethologist Konrad Lorenz who is one of the key theoreticians of the social world of pet owners. His lines of argumentation and categories of pet perception within this social world may be reconstructed from his personal recollections. The concepts of the social world and arena are the key notions that integrate the current analysis. The arena is also formed in the course of the inner conversation and is often going together with the outer disputes of a social world . It might seem that Konrad Lorenz as a scientist and ethologist should avoid using anthropomorphic categories. However, as he shares the same space (including private space) and communicates with domestic animals, the author tends to anthropomorphise their behaviour, even though formally he opposes or even despises the idea, applying a disdainful term of “sentimental anthropomorphisation” to people who do so. Additionally, the article addresses the biographic context of the ethologist’s life and his writings together with the activities of the Second World War as well as his collaboration with the Nazi government. Konrad Lorenz represents the socalled “cult of nature” approach which, in the opinion of his opponents, has a lot in common with the Nazi doctrine (Sax 1997).
