Opis:
Crises and disasters pose significant obstacles to the socio-economic progress of any destination, especially in the tourism sector. Although travel and tourism are among the world’s most prominent economic sectors, they are susceptible to various hindrances, such as natural disasters, political instability and unpredictable terrorist attacks, which can harm the destination’s reputation and decrease tourist arrivals. While humans cannot control these incidents, they can implement measures, strategies and activities to mitigate their impact. This research aims to create and validate a scale for crisis management strategies in tourism using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). A 58-item questionnaire was developed based on literature reviews and interviews with destination marketing organizations (DMO’s), which was then reduced to 47 items after content validation by experts and the target population. EFA was conducted on data from 346 tourism stakeholders, resulting in six discrete factors: media, promotional measures, partnering, security and awareness, innovative marketing, and finance. Finally, AMOS 21 was used to perform confirmatory factor analysis, and the crisis management strategies scale developed retained 38 items.

One of the causes of the financial crisis of 2008 can be found in neglecting the norms of business ethics, many of which were broken by bank officers. This claim leads to the global assessment of the new shape of global capitalism, commonly called turbocapitalism. Its financial products are marked by high risk. Hence ethical rules should be recalled as they help to judge actions which bring about many side effects as well as to assess liberal freedom, responsibility and professional integrity. Their application may prevent disastrous decisions made by individuals and financial institutions.

Opis:
This question raised emotions in Poland in 2010-2012. They began with the statement by the Prime Minister in March 2010 that Poland was ready to participate in a program of assistance to Greece. It evoked very strong reactions – not only in debates in conferences halls and in professional journals, but also in the tabloids and on TV and the radio. It was not only politicians and academic experts in economics who took part in those debates, but also the editors of the popular newspapers. The arguments “for” and “against” of different character were raised. Those “for” advocated on the grounds of the principle of solidarity, but also on the grounds of the principle of subsidiarity – arguing that the burden of the problem is beyond the possibilities of Greece to solve herself. They also raised the necessity to defend the endangered common good – the European Union, and argued that prudence advises earning reciprocation in case Poland meets problems in the future. Those “against” pointed out that it was immoral to expect that a much poorer society was expected to assist one that was better off. Another point raised in the debate was that it was the Greeks themselves, both the political elites and the society as such, who were guilty of creating Greece’s problems. The main problem was the institutions of the welfare state, developed beyond the capacities of the country. But there were also some more shocking reasons of the Greek economic problems – and among them massive tax-avoidance, unauthorized social benefits payments, and transfers of incomes to foreign bank accounts. There was also the manipulation of statistical data or even their falsification, by (or with the approval of) the government. Some participants in the debate raised the problem Greek frauds and social dysfunctions being very well known to the EU authorities, the partners of Greece in EMU and by the German and French commercial banks. So – following from the above – Poland should not participate in any programs of assistance to Greece, and the burden of the problem should rest on those who had been responsible for it or who had tolerated its growth because of expected profits. In other words: Greek society, its political elites and the banks and those countries that had tolerated the developments. The debate ended in Poland when the member-states of the EMU decided that they would take decisions concerning Greece within their own group. And it was decided that “troika” – representatives of the European Commission, ECB and IMF – would decide on the size of the assistance and of the conditions. Poland, as a member of the IMF, does in fact participate in the costs of the assistance programs, but this fact does not evoke great emotions.

Opis:
For the last few months the financial crisis is being widely discussed. However, it was foreseen some time ago by at least two people who named its deep causes. A philosopher of culture, Zygmunt Bauman, claims that a postmodern utopia of “morality without ethical code” makes it impossible to solve problems created by our era of “liquid modernity”. George Soros, an American currency speculator, stock investor, businessman, philanthropist, political activist, and a pupil of Karl Popper, maintains that the crisis is a result of a victory of “transaction morality” over “morality of the open society”. The two diagnosis of the present crisis show that the process of deregulation of the economy should not lead to the point where ethics loses its normative functions. This is the lesson of the crisis. Capitalism must be ethical or none.

Opis:
The model of “crisis” is a culturally shared and widespread idea of human reactions to misfortunes such as accidents, diagnosis of disease, divorces, becoming a parent of a disabled child, and so on. The crisis model conveys the idea of coming to terms with unwanted experiences while advancing through various phases, for example, of denial, processing, and acceptance. The language of crises is integrated into Western emotional culture, particularly in the language used by caring professionals (e.g., social workers, psychologists, counselors, and health staff). Crisis talk is also frequent in the media, popular science books, and in everyday conversations when individual experiences are reported, debated, or discussed. Investigating the specific local culture of the Swedish world of the Deaf, to which families whose children have been diagnosed deaf belong, we aimed to extend the current understanding of crisis. How do parents and professionals make use of the crisis model when speaking about their own experiences, as well as the experiences of others? We observed that the crisis model served as a prop in such talk; it was used to compare, defend, criticize, and explain the behavior of others, but also to account for one’s own emotions and behavior. In the process, locally relevant identities and categorizations of others were constructed. The crisis model was originally a way of “diagnosing” parents’ emotional experiences when they learned about their children being deaf, but it has proven useful for other purposes in a context with abundant ideological differences.

Facing the economic crisis (began in 2007) managers and political leaders pay more attention to the postulate of socially responsible business. The axiological turn gives new possibilities to implement ethical standards in the sphere of economy. Alas, at the same time, this task evokes the following problems. Firstly, as social researchers, we need to know how to compose heterogeneous axiological systems (to join rules of ethics with the imperative of economic efficiency). Secondly, as market participants, we have to find the formula of mutual understanding (being seen as precondition of our ethical claims).

In the context of globalization processes, the social market economy (SME) is in the crisis. Reflection on the features of that model is closely related with the scientific dispute over its designation. It could be perceived as a theory, political program, sort of economic order, structure, model or system of economic and social development. Sometimes it is seemed as an idealistic vision or even political utopia (Niklas Luhmann). Others (eg. Peter Koslowski) argue that this system has come to an end. In favor of this thesis they refer to various arguments: lack of consensus on redistribution, demographic crisis, depletion of solidarity resources, intergenerational imbalance that threatens the retirement systems and many others. Despite the range of these arguments, it appears that the SME still has a specific potential that could be freed. Combating difficulties associated with globalization processes such as: dominance of the economy over politics, ‘tax starvation’ of the welfare state, marginalization of trade unions, dispersion of ownership and its detachment from responsibility, ‘financialization’ of economy, dominance of ‘casino capitalism’, could help to heal SME. The crisis on financial markets might be paradoxically an opportunity to return to the ethical foundations of the SME.

Using a set of standard financial statements, you can designate a large number of economic and financial indicators that show the condition of the company. A large number of indicators gives a lot of opportunities to assess the health of the company. However, there is a risk of introduction of information chaos, which instead help in the assessment of the economic and social situation of the firm may make it harder for making analyses. Comes with the help of LDA, which is becoming more and more popular method to synthetic evaluation of the financial health of enterprises on the basis of the available financial statements. It not only allows for the simultaneous and consistent use, at least a couple of economic and financial information, but also takes into account the ability of certain indicators of financial and economic bankruptcy predictor. The essence of this method involves applying a discriminatory function linear, often called discriminatory model. The calculated value to the total health assessment by subject classification of it to one of two groups, businesses operating without any visible signs of problems in the economic sphere or at risk of bankruptcy. The main objective of the article was reached to Alma Market S.A. not threatened bankruptcy in the test for years to come. The article has been following the research hypothesis: An Alma Market S.A. does not run the risk of bankruptcy in all the years of the period considered. This hypothesis is confirmed, because throughout the period, the level of this indicator was higher than Altmanʼs equation, and therefore we can bankruptcy 2,60 except in accordance with the theory of Altman.

The author analyzes the successful strategy of overcoming financial breakdown in the case study of Iceland. The aim of the article is to verify a hypothesis that the Icelandic model could become a panacea for future crises? A document analysis method is applied to present essential indicators such as GDP and trade balance. With the use of a source analysis method, the collapse of the financial sector is determined as the main cause of the slump. The systematization of crisis events is introduced and deepened by the social and political situation. Changes in the state’s condition after the crash are provided and future forecasts about economic development are discussed. As a summing up, the author disapproves of the hypothesis that the Icelandic model of overcoming the financial breakdown as a panacea for future crises, pointing out that it is only applicable for specific cases and cannot be seen as a magical remedy for every kind of crisis.

The paper revisits two theories from the cultural anthropology. The first theory is by Bronisław Malinowski, and the second one by Karl Homann. Malinowski criticizes economism and moralism. I present further stages of this criticism, with special importance placed on the concept of homo oeconomicus. Malinowski demonstrates how moral norms are implemented in primitive cultures by means of magic, cults, customs and rituals and rites. Malinowski also argues for the significance of cultural institutions in stabilizing the functioning of primitive communities. These institutions sheltered the communities from the kind of crises that are also experienced in the present times, thus, giving the older schools of thought in cultural anthropology their deserving place within the contemporary thought.

The global economic crisis has brought about the need for States’ involvement to rescue many business entities from bankruptcy, initially in the financial sector, and at a later stage of the crisis in the real economy. In the countries of the European Union, these measures take the form of state aid, which is specifically regulated as it bestows benefits on its beneficiaries and therefore violates the rules of market competition. Thus, the provision of state aid is controversial, since it potentially adversely affects the competition policy pursued in the EU. This paper aims to analyse and evaluate the volume of state aid granted in the EU countries during the economic crisis and its potential impact on the health of the economy and the public finance sector.
Globalny kryzys gospodarczy spowodował konieczność zaangażowania państwa w ratowanie przed bankructwem wielu podmiotów gospodarczych, początkowo w sektorze finansowym, a następnie, w późniejszej fazie kryzysu, także w realnej sferze gospodarki.
