The purpose of this dissertation is to present the significant achievements and activities of this chaplain in many areas of his life. He is not a person well known and has not gained a rightful place in the Polish historiography. The author of this dissertation attempted to analyze the role of chaplain in the functioning of the Polish Legions, the battle for Przemyśl and pastoral work in the Polish Army. Also considered the impact of the priest chaplain on the activities of the peasant movement, attempted to determine the degree of the impact of journalism Socio-political face of ideological and programmatic opposition government. The author did not omit the question of the position of chaplain in the structures of conspiracy Lvov under Soviet occupation.

The recent book by Agnieszka Dziuba will be appreciated by both the ancient historians and the classical scholars in Poland for, as a monograph of a Roman woman, it has no antecedent. The study concerns Clodia’s background (“Clodia in historiography”), her portrayal by Cicero in the speech In Defense of M. Caelius Rufus, and her depiction in Catullus’ poetry. In the latter case, the author had to assume that in some of the poems Lesbia can be identified with Clodia Metelli. Despite some minor misrepresentations and misprints, the book is a sound analysis of the literary texts featuring the eponymous character. In addition, it offers a lively picture of the role women played in the Roman aristocratic society.

Biographical approaches are increasingly being used with people who speak and write a range of languages. Even when an account is originally spoken, the final version usually ends up written in the language used by the majority of the population. Researchers have shown that adopting a language that is not the one an account was given in may change how someone is perceived. Yet little has been written by sociologists using biographical approaches about the implications of moving accounts across languages. Researchers within translation and interpretation studies are increasingly tackling issues of representation across languages and developing concepts that can usefully be applied in biographical research. They question the assumption that accounts can be unproblematically transferred across languages and argue for strategies and concepts that “foreignise” texts and challenge the baseline of the target, usually for these writers, English language. However, these concepts bring issues of their own. In this article I examine these developments and give an example from my own cross language research that show that these concepts can begin to open up debates about meaning and representation.

The paper presents the profile of an outstanding researcher of the country-wide and a deserved activist of the People’s Movement who was closely related to the prominent figure of this movement i.e. Wincenty Witos. So far, information about life and activity of that scholar was scarce and came only from dictionary publishers. This text, however, puts special focus not only on Professors’ scientific achievements, but also on his dramatic fate during the Stalinist period. Similar to many persecuted people at those times, in order to resume his research career he had to conceal his past as a People’s Movement activist, agrarian and supporter of liberal-democratic system.

The author of this paper discusses the prose of Andrzej Brycht, comparing it with the writer’s biography and the collective biography and works of the “Współczesność” generation. The article presents and documents the uniqueness of Brycht’s early short stories in the context of his style and skill in building expressive literary characters. This paper closes with an attempt to give the reasons for the writer’s artistic failure.

Biographical interviewing is used not only in research but also in clinical work such as social work practice. However, as social work settings differ from research settings, the ways of doing, analyzing, and using biographical interviews will differ. The differences arise from the reasons for and the purposes of the interview, the institutional context, the relationship between interviewer and interviewee, interviewees’ capacity for storytelling and reflective work, time limits, the structure of the biographical interview, and follow-up interviewing. In social work, interviewees are in a more vulnerable position than in research, and there is a stronger power imbalance. The service users’ expectations are essential for the work, and it is important that the users articulate their expectations because the purpose of social work is to change and improve the life situation of service users. This asks for ethical considerations that are partly different from those necessary in research. The biographical interview with Natalia is here analyzed using the strengths perspective as the social work theoretical framework. The analysis shows that in her present life Natalia has many strengths and resources, which, in a social work situation, could be mobilized to support her in getting more control over her life. Her perceived strengths are: her capacity for storytelling and reflection; her emotional and cognitive capacities; her willpower; and her capacity for enjoying her present life and planning for her future. Resources identified are: her significant others; her economic situation; her satisfying job situation; her capacity to have dreams for the future; and her religion. Implications for social work, both in the past and in the present, are discussed.

Auto/bio/geo/graphics forms a creative and original interpretive lens of the author of the book, which looks at individual volumes, poems and texts about art by Julia Hartwig. Space assigned to the eponymous center, province and backstreets becomes the compositional frame, allowing for a smooth narration. These spatial references function as the compositional key of the book divided into three segments: France - a nostalgic center, America - the everyday life province and Poland – backstreets of history and memory, in which, in specific examples of works, each time a space and its transformations are accounted for.
Auto/bio/geo/grafia jest twórczą i niebanalną soczewką interpretacyjną autorki książki, która przygląda się poszczególnym tomom, wierszom i tekstom o sztuce autorstwa Julii Hartwig. Ramą kompozycyjną, która pozwala na prowadzenie płynnej narracji, staje się przestrzeń, przypisana do tytułowego centrum, prowincji i zaułka. Wspomniane odniesienia przestrzenne funkcjonują jako klucz kompozycyjny książki podzielonej na trzy segmenty: Francja – nostalgiczne centrum, Ameryka – prowincja codzienności oraz Polska – zaułki historii i pamięci, w ramach których, w konkretnych przykładach utworów, każdorazowo zostaje zauważona spacja i łączące się z nią przemiany.

Kładzie szczególny nacisk na zasługi badaczki w dziedzinie bibliologii.
The article was dedicated to professor Hanna Tadeusiewicz, a scientist from Lodz. Her scientific, didactical and organizational activities are connected with the University of Lodz. Her activities were focused on a particular field which was the workshop of the Dictionary of the Polish Book Labourers where she was a co-organizer and continuator. She also transferred her experience in biographical studies to Kalisz Society of Friends of Sciences. The article discusses the Professor's achievements in the field of biography studies. It puts a particular emphasis on the researcher's merits in the field of book studies.

Niniejszy tekst jest pierwszym opracowaniem biografii twórczyni ludowej Zofii Danielak. Obecnie należy ona do najstarszego pokolenia twórczyń ludowych pochodzących z Krzczonowa. Jej działalność była jak do tej pory dość skąpo opisywana, mimo iż jej aktywność twórcza była znacząca dla życia kulturalnego Krzczonowa oraz zachowania dziedzictwa kulturowego regionu. Najlepiej poznaną częścią działalności artystycznej Z. Danielak jest ta plastyczna i z zakresu tworzenia stroju ludowego. Mniej poznanym aspektem twórczości pozostają natomiast występy sceniczne i muzyczne. Na podstawie wywiadu, literatury przedmiotu i zachowanych obiektów artystycznych ukazany został w artykule portret jednej z nestorek krzczonowskiej sztuki ludowej, która mimo trudów życia, krzewiła edukację z zakresu sztuki ludowej i lokalnych tradycji. Dziś pozostaje natomiast wzorem do naśladowania dla przyszłych pokoleń.
This text is the first study of the biography of the folk artist Zofia Danielak. Currently, she belongs to the oldest generation of folk artists from Krzczonów. So far, her activity has been rather poorly described, despite the fact that her creative activity was significant for the cultural life of Krzczonów and the preservation of the cultural heritage of the region. The best known part of the artistic activity of Z. Danielak is folk costume. On the other hand, stage and musical performances remain a less known aspect of her creation Based on an interview, literature and preserved art objects, the article presents a portrait of doyen of folk art. From Krzczonów, which, despite the hardships of life, promoted education in the field of folk art and local traditions. Today, however, she remains a role model for future generations.
