Opis:
Richard III was very rarely staged in Russian theatre in tsarist and Stalin’s times, because the story of inhuman tyranny provoked associations with Russian political reality. In the period of the so-called “Thaw” (1954ß1964) the play became very popular in the USSR and several scenic productions of it were real events in Russian (and Soviet) theatrical life. In the essay three most original and successful performances (in Kujbyshev, Gorkij and Erevan) are discussed and compared.

Opis:
Czesław Miłosz’s The Issa Valley [Dolina Issy] was published in the Paris Literary Institute in 1955 and soon after started paving its way to readers in the author’s native country, in spite of the censorship. This article traces back the novel’s reception in the so-called Thaw (post-Stalin) period (1955–1957) in the light of official domestic publications and the documents of the Censorship Office. Those years saw publication of several argumentative and favourable essays on the novel (by e.g. I. Sławińska, J. Błoński, J. Zawieyski). The censors banned just one extensive discussion text on The Issa Valley, by Jarosław-Marek Rymkiewicz, and this owing to where it was published. A ban on publishing the poet’s works in a nonserial form was maintained. In that transitional period, new directives were coming from the communist-party headquarters, and the censors would often consult the heads of departments they reported to, or the Central Censorship Office directly. The situation grew severer by 1958, with the poet’s name being consistently removed from most publications.

Opis:
Systematic saturating the book offer by the radically ideological (socrealistic) literature and elimination of the traditional popular literature from liberaries and bookshops took place after seizing the entire power by Polish United Workers’ Party (Polska Zjednoczona Partia Robotnicza). Publishing and diffusing a hunge number of books unattractive for readers caused an obstruction of the system of book circulation: individual purchasers and library users ignored publishers’ offer. Flagrant dzsfunctionality of the book circulation extorted from its disposers modification of attitude towards romance, thriller and detective story despised so far and a change of tactics of publishing of the literature on service to socialism. The sign of this change was publication of Polish translation of The Thaw by Ilya Erenburg and a number of home novels attracting readers by thilling or erotic plots. Therefore, a socrealistic popular literature, especially militia-novel that shortly will acquire a great pupularity was arising.

Parables of Un-freedom: Novels about the Spanish Inquisition in post-1956 People’s Poland

Opis:
The article examines three post-1956 novels ostensibly about the Spanish Inquisition’s activities in Spain at the end of the fifteenth century: Jerzy Andrzejewski’s Ciemności kryją ziemię (The Inquisitors, 1957), Julian Stryjkowski’s Przybysz z Narbony (1978), and Jozef Cepik’s Torquemada (1986). These works are placed in a number of broader contexts: the uses of the historical novel in Poland; post-war Polish censorship discourse about the use of historical analogy to address current social and political problems, a practice which the political authorities sought to restrict; the contemporary critical reception where reviews of each novel are seen as articulating the novels’ fundamental concerns albeit subject to the same censorship restrictions; and ultimately the longestablished tradition of Aesopian writing within Polish literature. The analysis demonstrates the expansion of the space for critical public expression particularly in the Thaw years of 1956-57, and its contraction over time up to the mid-1970s. The rise of an independent publishing network at that point paradoxically both facilitates a more open discussion of the potential meanings of literary texts but equally has to observe censorship proprieties to avoid exposing officially published authors to political sanctions. With the growth of underground publishing, the Spanish Inquisition theme gradually declines in relevance, reflected by the critical marginalisation of Cepik’s novel. Ultimately, the article positions the trend within Macherey’s theory of significant silences within literary works, which permits a refinement of the historically contingent screen and marker that have typically defined Aesopian works. The article presents, with their English translations, hitherto unpublished documents from the Polish Party and Censorship archives, including examples of work confiscated by the censors.

Opis:
In the aftermath of the de-Stalinization processes (“political thaw”) the domestic peasant movement became markedly revived. The United People's Party (ZSL) was joined by genuine people’s activists who had been previously removed from active politics and accused for being in opposition to the communists. The district of Sieradz was also affected by the revival of the peasant movement. The ZSL activity was undergoing changes. The district management of the party fell into the hands of the activists who had been previously engaged in the structures of the opposition party of PSL, Polish People’s Party. The function of the district chairman of ZSL was at long last entrusted to Jan Plewiński in 1956, a dedicated people’s activist, a member of the people’s resistance movement during the Nazi occupation, and the leader of people’s party members in Sieradz. In the wake of the “October of 1956”, the members of the people’s party in Sieradz made an attempt of strengthening ZSL’s position in social and political life and increasing their independence of the governing PZPR (Polish United Workers Party). To achieve this goal they used political campaigns to the Seym and National Councils, among others. However, their endeavors remained ineffective as the PZPR policy, implemented with the aid of security agencies, put paid to the hopes of more profound political changes.

Opis:
The article presents political interpretations of Hamlet in Poland in the turbulent period of politcal changes between the mid-1950s and mid-1960s. The author discusses the relationships between Shakespeare’s tragedy and Polish political context as well as the influence of audience expectations in the specific interpretations. The selected performances are: Hamlet by Roman Zawistowski (at the Old Theatre in Cracow 1956) and Hamlet Study by Jerzy Grotowski (at the Laboratory Theatre of 13 Rows in Opole 1964). They both were hugely influenced by major commentators of Hamlet, i.e. Stanisław Wyspiański and Jan Kott. The author argues that up-to-date readings of Hamlet, which started with Wyspiański’s study in 1905, flourished in the mid-1950s and mid-1960s when concerning specific political events: the Polish Thaw of 1956 and March 1968, when the Jews were expelled from Poland. Thus Hamlet of that time was updated and must be seen through the prism of political events.
