    Due to the growing popularity of video games, gaming itself has become a shared experience among media audiences worldwide. The phenomenon of avatar-based games has led to the emergence of new storytelling practices. The paper proposes a typology of tropes in these avatar-based narratives focusing on non-game case studies. Suggested tropes are also confronted with the latest research on avatars in the area of game studies and current knowledge of the issues concerning the player-avatar relationship. Some of the most popular misconceptions regarding the gameplay experience and its representation in non-game media are exposed as a result of this analysis. The research confirms that popular culture perceives gaming experience as closely related to the player identity, as the latter inspires new genres of non-game narratives.

    The aim of the article is to analyze the artistic, social project titled My Space. Stories from Inside the Downtown Eastside Vancouver, created by Canadian photographer Rita Leistner. Through her photographs and interviews, the artist presents the everyday life of a group of drug and alcohol addicted residents of Astoria and Balmoral hotels. The article is based on photographs taken by Leistner and the statements of project participants – both acquired from the artist’s Webpage. Bearing in mind Leistner’s intentions, we tend to present her story in the storytelling narrative. We treat that approach as a useful tool for qualitative data analysis as well as insightful framework to represent a story. This approach has worked well so far in the study of culture and art. Thus, we focus on the content and a form of a story while uncovering its threads looking at it from different dimensions interpreted through the prism of individuals to whom the story relates. We look at the way in which the space occupied by the heroes of the story is being photographed by Leistner, who creates a medium allowing the narrative to connect the present with the past and the future. That medium plays an important role in building a community.
    Celem artykułu jest analiza artystyczno-społecznego projektu My Space. Stories from Inside the Downtown Eastside Vancouver kanadyjskiej fotografki Rity Leistner. Artystka poprzez swoje fotografie i wywiady przybliża codzienność grupy uzależnionych od narkotyków i alkoholu mieszkańców hoteli Astoria i Balmoral. Artykuł opiera się na fotografiach z projektu My Space oraz wypowiedziach jego uczestników. Mając na uwadze intencje twórczyni, autorzy artykułu przedstawili go w kontekście storytellingu, który potraktowali jako użyteczne narzędzie jakościowej analizy zjawisk społecznych. Podejście to sprawdza się przede wszystkim w badaniu zjawisk kultury i sztuki, a zwłaszcza różnego rodzaju wytworów artystycznych. W opracowaniu skupiono się na formie opowieści, która łączy w sobie wątki z wielu wymiarów indywidualnego i społecznego życia jednostki. Pokazano, jak fotografie przestrzeni, w której mieszkają bohaterowie opowieści, mogą stać się medium narracji łączącej teraźniejszość z przeszłością i przyszłością, a przede wszystkim służyć budowaniu społecznej wspólnoty.

    This conversation takes place in Warsaw. Carolyn Ellis has come to Poland to accompany Jerry Rawicki, a Warsaw Ghetto survivor, on his first trip back to Poland since the Holocaust. There she arranged to meet Marcin Kafar, a scholar in Poland who has spent time with her at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. During this visit, Marcin assists Carolyn with video recording Jerry’s experiences as they visit Holocaust sites, and Jerry remembers and reflects on his experience. Afterwards, Marcin converses with Carolyn about autoethnography, storytelling, and the importance of life in the context of searching for ethos by academics.

    Jedną z osobliwości warsztatu pisarskiego Harolda Pintera jest bogactwo elementu narracyjnego. Bohaterowie sztuk tego wybitnego brytyjskiego dramatopisarza rzadko porozumiewają się ze sobą w tradycyjny sposób i zamiast oczekiwanej konwersacji słyszymy zaskakujące historie i opowieści. To niezwykłe wtopienie elementów narracji w tworzywo dramatyczne jest oryginalnym i niezwykle efektownym zamierzeniem autora. Celem tego artykułu jest próba ukazania roli historii opowiadanych przez bohaterów najdojrzalszej i najbardziej znanej sztuki Pintera pt. The Homecoming. W poniższej analizie szczególną uwagę poświęcono roli opowieści w rozwoju akcji dramatycznej. Historie opowiadane przez bohaterów demaskują pewne zdarzenia z przeszłości, stosunek opowiadającego do sytuacji obecnej oraz odsłaniają najskrytsze marzenia i dążenia. Subiektywny i emocjonalny charakter opowieści nie pozwala na ich dosłowną interpretację, jednakże dostarcza cennego materiału do analizy psychologicznej narratora. Artykuł podejmuje również zagadnienie roli opowieści jako zwierciadła wzajemnych relacji między bohaterami i narzędzia powodującego zmianę tych stosunków.

    Opis:
    One of the most frequent ways of narrating everyday life in developed countries has been via the printed book. The invention of printing allowed for an ever-increasing mass production of documents of life that systematically established an era of communication and a political economy that had profound implications for the structure of living together. This article departs from the context of my own lifeworld: a lifeworld closely related to printed books. When attempting to explore and understand the overt and covert meanings embedded in the historical development of our social lives and the objects around us, we can turn for assistance to an analysis of the books on our shelves, books that have been constant companions for long periods of our lives. In this article, I propose that any valid interpretation, understanding, and depiction of social reality need to be, in essence, autobiographical. The autobiographical account I present includes how my personal life trajectory led me to the books that surround me. And how, in turn, these books become a reflection of myself and my roots.

    In this paper it is argued that digital technologies will have a transformative effect in the social sciences in general and in the fast developing field of narrative studies in particular. It is argued that the integrative and interdisciplinary nature of narrative approaches are further enhanced by the development of digital technologies and that the collection of digital data will also drive theoretical and methodological developments in narrative studies. Biographical Sociology will also need to take account of lives lived in, and transformed by, the digital domain. How these technologies may influence data collection methods, how they might influence thinking about what constitutes data, and what effects this might have on the remodeling of theoretical approaches are all pressing questions for the development of a Twenty First Century narratology. As Marshall McLuhan once put it “First we shape our tools and then our tools shape us”.

    This paper examines the Megg, Mogg and Owl stories of Simon Hanselmann, an Australian artist whose serialized comics both depict acts of contemporary roguery committed by a group of friends in an inner city sharehouse and test the generic limits of its own storytelling conventions, thereby becoming contemporary instances of “rogue texts.” The paper positions the adventures of Megg, a witch, Mogg, her familiar, Owl, their housemate, and associated characters including Booger and Werewolf Jones as contemporary variations of both the Australian genre of grunge fiction and the broad international tradition of rogue literature. It shows how Megg, Mogg, Owl and their friends use the structure of the sharehouse to make their own rules, undertake illegal behaviour, and respond to the strictures of mainstream society, which alongside legal restrictions include normative restrictions on gender and behaviour. It shows the sharehouse as a response to their economic, as well as cultural and social conditions. The paper then shows how Megg and particularly Owl come up against the limitations of the permissiveness and apparent security of their “rogue” society, and respond by beginning to “go rogue” from the group. Meanwhile, the text itself, rather than advancing through time, goes over the same chronology and reinscribes it from new angles, becoming revisionist and re-creative, perhaps behaving roguishly against the affordances of episodic, vignette form. The paper argues that Simon Hanselmann’s Megg, Mogg and Owl comics can be understood as contemporary rogue texts, showing characters responding to social and generic limits and expressing them through a restless and innovative comics text.

    Głównym celem autorek artykułu jest interdyscyplinarne spojrzenie na turystykę i jej diachroniczne wątki tekstualne w prototurystycznych pismach Pauzaniasza – greckiego autora opowieści o podróżach. Korzystając z periegetycznych tekstów podróżniczych, zaczerpniętych z jego obszernego dzieła Wędrówki po Helladzie (Periegesis tes Hellados; II w. n.e.), będącego punktem wyjścia do rozważań, autorki zamierzają pokazać, że strategie tekstualne Pauzaniasza wciąż stanowią podstawę współczesnej serii przewodników turystycznych, zapoczątkowanej przez K. Baedekera w XIX w. Celem opracowania jest również wykazanie, że po Baedekerze tradycyjne teksty podróżnicze Pauzaniasza nadal mają wpływ na epistemologię współczesnej turystyki: interakcje między tekstami podróżniczymi, zawierającymi informacje turystyczne, a kanałami dystrybucji prowadzą do pojawienia się generycznych hybryd, a starożytni greccy autorzy podróży utorowali drogę do tworzenia cyfrowych opowiadań, sieci i globalnych platform turystycznych.

    The key aim of this article is to provide an interdisciplinary look at tourism and its diachronic textual threads bequeathed by the ‘proto-tourist’ texts of the Greek travel author Pausanias. Using the periegetic, travel texts from his voluminous Description of Greece (2nd century CE) as a springboard for our presentation, we intend to show how the textual strategies employed by Pausanias have been received and still remain at the core of contemporary series of travel guides first authored by Karl Baedeker (in the 19th century). After Baedeker, Pausanias’ textual travel tropes, as we will show, still inform the epistemology of modern-day tourism; the interaction of travel texts with travel information and distribution channels produces generic hybrids, and the ancient Greek travel authors have paved the way for the construction of networks, digital storytelling and global tourist platforms.

    While drawing from the philosophy of Bernard Stiegler throughout the paper, I commence by highlighting Zoltan Istvan’s representation of transhumanism in the light of its role in politics. I continue by elaborating on the notion of the promise of eternal life. After that I differentiate between subjects that are proper for philosophy (such as the mind or whether life is worth living) and science (measurable and replicable). The arguments mostly concern mind-uploading and at the same time I elaborate on a simple critique of mind-body dualism, which is one of the key imagined orders exploitable by technologies in the narratives of transhumanism present in popular culture. This is reframed as a problem of action. The focus of this article is on the claim that certain transhumanisms are dangerous forms of Neo-Darwinism. It comes from a critical assessment of capital and the exploitation of bodies through market forces. Entropy is a process of growing disorder, while neganthropy is an anthropological struggle against exploitation, not only of bodies, but of all ecosystems of the Earth. The arguments of Stiegler from a collection of lectures are recapitulated, and his claims are presented through the prism of transhuman narrative, with a particular focus on Christian Salmon's position in the book Storytelling: Bewitching the Modern Mind.
    Czerpiąc w całym tekście z filozofii Bernarda Stieglera, rozpoczynam od prezentacji transhumanizmu Zoltana Istvana w świetle jego roli w polityce. Kontynuuję rozwijając koncept obietnicy życia wiecznego. Następnie rozróżniam tematy właściwe dla filozofii (takie jak umysł lub to, czy życie jest warte życia) i nauki (to, co mierzalne i powtarzalne). Przedstawiam argumenty dotyczące przede wszystkim transferu umysłu (mind-uploading), a jednocześnie omawiam prostą krytykę dualizmu umysł-ciało, który jest jednym z kluczowych, wykorzystywanych przez technologie wyobrażonych porządków w narracjach transhumanizmu obecnych w kulturze popularnej. Przeformułowuję to jako problem działania. Artykuł skupia się na twierdzeniu, że niektóre transhumanizmy są niebezpiecznymi formami neodarwinizmu. Wynika to z krytycznej oceny kapitału i eksploatacji ciał przez siły rynkowe. Entropia jest procesem narastającej dezorganizacji, podczas gdy negantropia jest antropologiczną walką z eksploatacją nie tylko ciał, ale wszystkich ekosystemów Ziemi. Argumenty Stieglera ze zbioru wykładów zyskują podsumowanie, a jego twierdzenia przedstawiane są przez pryzmat transhumanistycznej narracji, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem stanowiska Christiana Salmona wyłożonym w książce: Storytelling: Bewitching the Modern Mind.

    The article reflects upon Sam Shepard’s playwrighting in the opening decades of the twenty-first century, paying particular attention to his last play, A Particle of Dread (Oedipus Variations), written specifically for the Derry/Londonderry City of Culture celebrations in 2013, and originally produced by the renowned Field Day Theatre Company. The article seeks to offer an insight into Shepard’s mature multilayered text, which, in many respects, looks back upon almost fifty years of his artistic creativity and, at the same time, expands his vision. It also addresses the realisation of Shepard’s play in performance and the significance of his text in an interplay of multiple creative inputs involved in the production process. While revisiting the familiar landscapes and themes, Shepard’s most recent work negotiates the boundaries between the actual and the fictitious, raising debates about the persistence of myths, mortality and the haunting legacies of the past. Richly intertextual and conspicuously metatheatrical, it grapples with questions of authenticity, performativity and storytelling – the narratives that are passed down, and how they form and inform our lives. It also engages with, and further problematises, issues of personal and cultural identity, which constitute Shepard’s most durable thematic threads, revealing both the dramatist’s acute concern with fateful determinism and commitment to self-invention. Significantly, while Shepard’s postmillennial output highlights the author’s ongoing preoccupation with instability and frontiers of various sorts (from those topographic, temporal and sociopolitical to those of language and art), it equally intimates his attentiveness to correspondences between times, lands and cultures.

    Generationserzählungen haben sich in der deutschen Sprache als eine erfolgversprechende, aber auch sehr wandelbare Gattung erwiesen. Der einleitende Beitrag fokussiert auf die Fähigkeit des Narrativs, die deutsche und europäische Geschichte mitzugestalten und auch umzuschreiben. Dabei greifen jüngere Werke Vergessenes und fehlendes Wissen auf und verarbeiten weite Zeiträume imaginativ. Durch ihre vielschichtigen Zugriffe auf die Zeit reflektiert die einschlägige Literatur nicht nur über die Vergangenheit, sondern auch grundsätzlicher über den ästhetischen Umgang mit der Zeit und ihre sprachlichen Darstellungsmöglichkeiten.
    Generational narratives have proven to be a promising but also very uneven genre in the German language. This introductory article focuses on the ability of the narrative to create and recreate German and European history. In recent works, forgotten and missing knowledge is recovered, and distant times are processed imaginatively. Through its multilayered access to time, the relevant literature not only reflects on the past, but also more fundamentally, on the aesthetic representation of time and its linguistic expression.
    Opowieści rodzinne odnoszą w niemieckim obszarze językowym duże sukcesy, ale są też gatunkiem, podlegającym ciągłym ewolucjom. Niniejszy artykuł zakłada, że narracja jest zdolna współkształtować niemiecką i europejską historię a nawet nadawać jej nowe znaczenie. Utwory literackie ostatnich lat odwołują się zarówno do procesu zapominania jak i do braku odpowiedniej wiedzy; stąd całe przestrzenie czasowe są przepracowane przez wyobraźnię twórców. Dzięki wielorakim odniesieniom do pojęcia czasu, literatura sięga nie tylko do przeszłości, ale przygląda się możliwościom estetycznego i językowego oglądu fenomenu czasu.

    Artykuł przedstawia wyniki badań jakościowych facebookowej grupy wsparcia „Porcelanowe Aniołki”. Głównym celem artykułu jest pokazanie roli opowieści o chorobie w kształtowaniu się tożsamości osób zmagających się z problemami psychicznymi oraz tego, jak funkcjonowanie analizowanej grupy wsparcia pozwala wybrzmieć tym historiom. Autorka stawia tezę, że taka społeczność zapewnia przestrzeń na historie, które łatwiej jest opowiedzieć w sieci lub za jej pośrednictwem. Dzięki temu możliwe jest konstruowanie opowieści o subiektywnym przeżywaniu choroby. Podstawę empiryczną artykułu stanowią wywołane dane biograficzne w postaci listów członków grupy. Główny materiał poddany analizie wzbogacony jest internetową obserwacją uczestniczącą, która miała na celu rozpoznanie ogólnych mechanizmów funkcjonowania „Porcelanowych Aniołków”, oraz indywidualnymi wywiadami pogłębionymi z psycholożkami i suicydolożką, które pokazują szerszy kontekst funkcjonowania grupy. Tekst rozpoczyna się od omówienia literatury z zakresu socjologii i antropologii zdrowia, socjologii interakcji, socjologii Internetu oraz od przeglądu dotychczasowych polskich badań internetowych grup wsparcia. Następnie rozważane są kwestie metodologiczne i etyczne. W dalszej części autorka przechodzi do omówienia i analizy zebranego materiału. Rozważania prowadzą ją do wniosku, że w przestrzeni internetowej grupy wsparcia i dzięki niej autorzy listów mogą lepiej zrozumieć własną historię choroby, wykraczającą poza medyczne definicje.
    The article presents the results of a qualitative research on the Facebook group called ‘Porcelanowe Aniołki’ [‘Porcelain Angels’]. The main aim of the article is to present the role of storytelling about a disease in shaping the identity of those struggling with a mental health problem, and how the functioning of the analysed support group allows these tales to resonate. The author argues that such a community provides a space for stories, which are easier to tell on the Internet and through it. Owing to this, it is possible to construct tales about experiencing an illness subjectively. The empirical foundation of the article consists of requested biographical data in the form of letters written by the group members. The main researched material is enriched with Internet-based participant observation – which aimed at recognizing the general mechanisms of the functioning of the ‘Porcelanowe Aniołki’ – as well as with individual in-depth interviews with psychologists and a suicidologist, which reveal the broader context of the group’s functioning. The article begins with a literature review regarding the fields of sociology and anthropology of health, sociology of interaction, and sociology of the Internet, as well as an overview of previous Polish Internet-based studies on support groups. Moreover, the material also contains the analysis of methodological and ethical issues. In the further part of the article, the author proceeds to the discussion and analysis of the collected material. The considerations lead the researcher to the conclusion that in and through the support group, the authors of the letters can better understand the history of their own illness, one beyond medical definitions.

    In NINO HARATISCHWILIS Roman Das achte Leben (Für Brilka) versucht die Erzählerin Niza vergeblich, die sowjetische Geschichte Georgiens und die individuelle Geschichte ihrer Familie zwischen 1900 und 2006 aufeinander bezogen darzustellen. Der Aufsatz argumentiert, dass in den Defiziten des Erzählprogramms Nizas Widersprüche einer für den Generationenroman typischen Erzählpoetik produktiv gemacht werden, der es nicht gelingt, individuelle, familiäre und politische Geschichte zu einem sinnstiftenden Narrativ zu verbinden. Am Ende des Romans steht deshalb ein Medienwechsel von der literarischen Geschichtsdarstellung zu ihrer performativen Verkörperung im Tanz, in dem die theatrale Adaption des Romans, wie sie JETTE STECKEL 2017 am Thalia Theater Hamburg inszenierte, bereits angelegt ist.
    In NINO HARATISCHWILI’S Das achte Leben (Für Brilka) the novel’s narrator, Niza, unsuccessfully attempts to relate Georgia’s Soviet history and her family’s history between 1900 and 2006. The paper argues that the deficits in Niza’s narrative programme are actually productive contradictions, which are typical of the narrative poetics of the generational novel, in that it does not succeed in synthesising the individual, familial and political histories into one meaningful narrative. The end of the novel therefore changes to a new medium: from the literary representation of history, to its performative embodiment in dance. This anticipates the theatrical adaptation of the novel by JETTE STECKEL at the Thalia Theater Hamburg in 2017.
    W powieści NINO HARATISCHWILI Das achte Leben (Für Brilka) (Ósme życie – dla Brilki) narratorka Niza podejmuje nieudane próby przedstawienia radzieckiej historii Gruzji oraz związanej z nią indywidualnej historii swojej własnej rodziny w latach 1900-2006. Artykuł dostrzega w deficytach opowiadania Nizy sprzeczności. Wynikają one z wykorzystania poetyki narracyjnej, charakterystycznej dla powieści pokoleniowej, której nie udaje się powiązać ze sobą historii indywidualnej, rodzinnej i politycznej w jedno, mające wspólny sens opowiadanie. Koniec powieści posługuje się w związku z tym nowym medium: rezygnuje z literackiego opowiadania o historii i przechodzi do jej performatywnego ucieleśnienia w tańcu. Antycypuje ono adaptację teatralną, jaką była w 2017 r. inscenizacja JETTY STECKEL w Teatrze Thalia w Hamburgu.
