    This paper presents a qualitative analysis of women’s experiences of call to Christian pastoral ministry as a second career—a mid-life turning point. Drawing on 44 semi-structured interviews with pastors of different denominations, I look at women’s stories of call through the lens of interpretive theory to analyze how women create meanings around this life altering event, and how they construct past experiences in light of these decisions. I employ George Herbert Mead’s theory of time to analyze how women afford prior secular work experiences sacred meaning in light of their subsequent “pastoral call” experience. This paper attempts to arrive at a better understanding of women’s experience of entering pastoral ministry, as well as their past and future life trajectories.

    This text examines three life stories about becoming mentally ill and Albert Camus’ fictive narrative “The Stranger”. The main concern is how the social and psychiatry intervenes in the narrative that the interviewees give. Drawing from a reasoning in Michel Foucaults monograph Madness and Civilization and Dorothy Smiths work on relations of ruling the argument in this article is that when becoming mentally ill one is involved in a process of loosing agency in ones own life story. Illustratively with Camus novel the analysis unravel that the interviewees become strangers in their own life story.

    The explorative study hereby presented is based on in-depth interviews with 16 renowned Israeli writers of prose and poetry. The aim of the study is to examine the identity-stories of these masters of the written word. By the term "identity-story", we relate to the self-reflective or "arspoetic" sides of the life stories our interviewees presented, the hows, whens and whys which had brought them to realize their identities as their cultures' authorized authors or poets. Thematic analysis of these stories, conducted in the spirit of the Schutzian Phenomenological-Interpretive approach, reveals an interesting interplay of two seemingly contradictory core meta-themes - identity-creation and identity-discovery. The present paper is focused on the identity-discovery meta-theme. Unlike the identitycreation meta-theme, which illustrates active, deliberate and conscious processes of identity construction within the social world, the identitydiscovery meta-theme is based on narratives that detect the belief in the feasibility of a transcendental revelation of a given identity, whose roots lies beyond the ties of time and place.

    The connection between personal story and morality has been long enunciated, but remains under-researched. Combining moral and narrative theory, this article approaches this relation by introducing a line of narrative inquiry oriented towards the exploration of how ethical intentions with regard to the good life manifest in and shape the biographical storyline and the self narratively assembled. The analysis encompasses a first case-based stage focused on the examination of the main motive of the personal story and its effects upon the organization of both self and narrative, followed by a comparative phase in which storylines and moral motives that work as reference of a set of biographical accounts belonging to different social positions, temporalities, or geographies are contrasted in order to establish linkages, breaks, and transformations in the relation between identity and morality across cases. This line of inquiry is applied into a research about intergenerational changes and continuities in the relation between selfhood and morality, based on life stories conducted with Chilean people of successive generations. In the conclusions, this strategy of narrative analysis is assessed in the light of current development of this field of qualitative social research.

    Socjologiczne analizy etiologii zachowań przestępczych wyróżniają szereg czynników kryminogennych, wśród których szczególne znaczenie przypisuje się środowiskowemu kontekstowi funkcjonowania jednostki. Inicjacja aktywności przestępczej ma najczęściej miejsce w okresie wczesnej młodości. Stąd też badacze problematyki zwracają uwagę na relacje społeczne jednostki w środowiskach socjalizujących. Jednocześnie badania i analizy życiorysów przestępców wskazują, że znaczna część z nich rekrutuje się ze środowisk doświadczających silnej marginalizacji w wielu ważnych aspektach funkcjonowania w społeczeństwie, dostarczając tym samym kolejnych argumentów na rzecz związków między wykluczeniem społecznym i przestępczością. Celem artykułu jest charakterystyka środowiskowych uwarunkowań wejścia na drogę konfliktu z prawem w biografiach przestępców. Autor odwołuje się do materiału empirycznego zebranego w toku badań własnych – wywiadów narracyjnych ze skazanymi oraz byłymi więźniami.
    Sociological analyzes of the etiology of criminal behavior are distinguished by a number of criminogenic factors, among which a particular importance is attributed to the environmental context of the individual’s functioning. The initiation of criminal activity frequently takes place in the period of early youth. Hence, special attention is paid to individual’s relations in socializing environments. At the same time, studies and analyzes of biographies of criminals indicate that a significant part of offenders were raised in communities experiencing deep marginalization in many important aspects of functioning in social life, thus providing further evidence for the long-recognized connections of social exclusion and crime processes. The aim of the article is to characterize the environmental conditions of entering the path of conflict with the law in the biographies of criminals. The author refers to empirical material collected in the course of his own research – narrative interviews with convicts and former prisoners.

    The (re)presentation of biographic narrative research benefits greatly from embracing the art of its craft. This requires a renewed interest in an aesthetic of storytelling. Where do we find an aesthetic in which to base our new “performative” social science? The 20th Century was not kind to 18th Century notions of what truth and beauty mean. The terms need to be re-examined from a local, quotidian vantage point, with concepts such as “aesthetic judgment” located within community. Social Constructionism asks us to participate in alterior systems of belief and value. The principles of Nicolas Bourriaud’s Relational Aesthetics offer one possible set of convictions for further exploration. Relational Art is located in human interactions and their social contexts. Central to it are inter-subjectivity, being-together, the encounter and the collective elaboration of meaning, based in models of sociability, meetings, events, collaborations, games, festivals and places of conviviality. Bourriaud believes that Art is made of the same material as social exchanges. If social exchanges are the same as Art, how can we portray them? One place to start is in our (re)presentations of narrative stories, through publications, presentations and performances. Arts-based (re)presentation in knowledge diffusion in the post-modern era is explored as one theoretical grounding for thinking across epistemologies and supporting inter-disciplinary efforts. An example from my own published narrative biography work is described, adding credence to the concept of the research report/presentation as a “dynamic vehicle”, pointing to ways in which biographic sociology can benefit from work outside sociology and, in turn, identifying areas of possible collaboration with the narrator in producing “performances” within published texts themselves.

    Artykuł, poświęcony rosnącej popularności picture-booków i kłopotom z ich definicją, koncentruje się na twórczości Iwony Chmielewskiej, autorki związanej z tematyką Zagłady. Szczegółowo omówione zostają jej dwie książki, Pamiętnik Blumki (2011) i Dopóki niebo nie płacze (2016), reprezentujące różne odmiany tego gatunku, będące eksperymentami w poszukiwaniu nowych form książki jako materialnego i wizualnego obiektu, narzucającego nielinearny porządek odbioru i problematyzującego relacje między słowem a obrazem. Podjęte zostają również kwestie etyczne w literaturze o Holokauście, wyrażające się często w wyborze między realistycznym obrazowaniem, metaforycznym skrótem a milczeniem.
    The author discusses the growing popularity of picture-books and gives a critical overview of the problems of the definition of the genre. He concentrates on the two recent works of Iwona Chmielewska which address the issues of the Holocaust, representing different approaches to the genre, experimenting with the book as a material and visual object, requiring non-linear reception and problematizing the word-image relation. The article also reflects on ethical issues of the Holocaust literature, which can be identified in the choice between realistic representation, metaphorical codensation and silence.

    The book is about poverty in Poland during the period of system transformation and in the decade that followed, as documented in the life courses of consecutive generations of women living in the disadvantaged neighbourhoods in the post-industrial city. 69 life histories were collected. The authors analyse the life histories of four generations of women where the oldest are former workers in state-owned factories in which they worked until retirement and who used to be the avant-garde of the women’s working class during the socialist period. Their daughters, granddaughters and great-granddaughters occurred redundant on the capitalist labour market and lived on social benefits. The book is unique in both Polish and world literature since it goes beyond traditionally considered “feminisation of poverty” in monetary terms. It searches for poverty drivers and maintainers embedded in changes in industrial relations, welfare regime and family structures and relations. It also tells about women’ efforts and capabilities to cope with the disadvantage. The publication will be of interest to a broad audience composed of scholars concerned with poverty, social marginalisation and exclusion, officers in public and non-governmental institutions as well as to students of social work, sociology, pedagogy, psychology, social policy, gender studies and family science.

    The article discusses factory workers’ nostalgia in the times of sudden and radical transformation of their work environment. It presents nostalgia’s sources, meanings, and functions in the light of a case study of confectionery factory in Poland. It shows nostalgia not only as a part of workers’ moral economy, but also as their tool to criticize transformation, which helps them to delimit their community and to interpret the changes in conditions of employment and organization of production.

    This paper aims to analyze the relevance given to violent deaths and imprisonment by male homicide perpetrators in their biographical reconstructions. Drawing on narrative criminology, this study examines the offenders’ emic terms, rationalities, and stories. The analysis is based on seventy-three purposefully selected narrative-biographical interviews and field observations in prisons and homes of former convicts (2016-2020) in Metropolitan Buenos Aires, Argentina. The corpus was analyzed following an inductive thematic coding strategy using ATLAS.ti. Three central narratives about homicide and incarceration emerged: “opportunity,” “rock bottom,” and “disruptive.” For most, homicide was described as a biographical opportunity to rethink their lives, pursue new pathways, and “stabilize” a previously uncontrolled lifestyle. However, homicides perpetrated by respondents with higher socioeconomic status were disruptive events. Participants used stoic rationality—the positive appraisal of painful experiences—to structure their sense-making and stories of violence. This rationality permeated perpetrators’ presentations of themselves, their turning points and lived experiences, and the violence performed and suffered. This paper grapples with the widespread assumption that homicide is a radical change in the lives of offenders and questions the universal meaning of violent death. Performing violence is not only neutralized but is also seen as an expected and inaugural event in life stories, dependent on the worldviews of the social actors.

    Prezentowany esej, w którym Profesor Arthur Bochner dokonał krótkiego przeglądu znaczeń nadawanych trwającemu prawie pół wieku doświadczeniu pracy na uczelni, został zaprezentowany audytorium złożonemu z koleżanek i kolegów, studentów oraz naukowców z uniwersytetu. Podkreślono w nim improwizację obecną w akademickim życiu zawodowym, przywołano anegdoty o ważnych postaciach, które Profesor miał okazję obserwować i z którymi często pracował. Wskazano również na często destabilizujące, a prawie zawsze poruszające wymiary życia uniwersyteckiego, których doświadczył, krocząc po uniwersyteckiej drodze. Zainspirowany przez wyzwania stojące przed całościową edukacją osoby, umysłu i serca, jak również pełen pasji w odniesieniu do etycznych, emocjonalnych i literackich potrzeb nauk humanistycznych, Profesor przedstawia plan dalszych badań nad samowyjaśniającymi, ewokacyjnymi i potencjalnie transformującymi opowieściami.  
    In this essay, originally presented to an audience of colleagues, students, and university faculty, I briefly review the meanings I ascribe to my experience of nearly half a century as a university faculty member. I emphasize the improvisational quality of professorial life, the amusing characters I was able to observe and with whom I often worked, and several unsettling and agitating dimensions of university life that I experienced along the way. Inspired by the challenge of educating the whole person, mind and heart, and passionate about the moral, emotional, and literary urgency of the human sciences, I plan to continue to focus on self-clarifying, evocative, and potentially transforming stories.

    In comparison to other classical music players (such as Fiodor Szalapin’s Memories from my life), Arthur Rubinstein’s My early years seem to be a work of a thriller-like fabular layer and an elementary non-fiction value. In my sketch, instead of evaluating this pro-portion, I suggest making a more useful move — a rhetorical analysis of the auto-creatrional pose which is adopted by the memoir’s subject. By means of this I present the memoir I (which easily embodies roles such as a liar, joker, raconteur and sage), as well as point and decipher the mechanisms of popular prose, which the author activates. Thanks to this approach Rubinstein uncovers his unknown face — a conscious writer and amusement culture hothead. Uncovering its codes in My early years with the evolu-tionary biography construction of the main character basically means retelling the musi-cian’s diary — this time as well composed, popular literature. By means of this proce-dure the author’s mistakes and slips of memory become softened, for playing with the reader to persuade him to believe in the maker’s unfailing memory seems to be more important. A separate matter in this sketch is the reflection on the anecdotal-narcisistic layer of the memoir. To open it I use not the rhetorical key, but psychotherapeutic tools, revealing a considerable amount of autotherapy potential in Rubinstein’s memories. Thus, this sketch discloses and exposes the mystifying mechanisms in the work of the great pianist, leveling them with the consoling inclinations of popular biographies.
