Nowadays, dance plays an important role in the modern tourism industry. Today, the craze for dancing creates great opportunities for cultural tourism. However, it should be remembered that there is a great danger of losing the most important meaning of dance by commercializing and reducing its essence. Dance tourism as discussed in the article is understood as travel for the purpose of learning about dance and its culture in places where given dance styles were born, or where they play an important national role as well as enjoying great popularity among the local community. This article is an introduction to the issue of dance tourism in an anthropological context. It presents potential attractions related to dance in the perspectives of cultural and sports tourism, it has an illustrative and descriptive character while its method is a literature review and presentation of popular examples.

Focusing on the work of Yemenite “ethnic” dance companies in Israel, this article aims to understand how issues such as a shift in collective representations come to be invested into dance practices. In other words, it discusses how artistic creation and identity reconfigurations happen to associate in a dance form, and how an ethnographic study of dance practices and their contexts of performance may be a valuable way of accessing the dynamics of self-positioning of a group within the surrounding society. Linking together “classical” ethnography, analysis of dance products, and socio-political contextualisation, the present analysis shows that the articulation of two apparently contradictory ways of building these companies’ repertoire allows Yemenite dancers, choreographers, and also internal audience, to assume in one single dance form a sense of “being Yemenite” whilst not giving up the national dimension of their Israeli identity.

The article aims at presenting the symbolic interactionism as a useful and flexible theoretical perspective in research on the human body. It shows the assumptions of symbolic interactionism in their relation to the human body, as well as explains how basic notions of this theoretical perspective are embodied—the self, social role, identity, acting, interacting. I depict the unobvious presence of the body in the classical works of George H. Mead, Anselm Strauss, Howard Becker, Erving Goffman, and in more recent ones, such as Bryan Turner, Ken Plummer, and Loïc Wacquant. I also describe the Polish contribution to the field, including research on disability, hand transplant, the identity of a disabled person, together with the influence of sport, prostitution as work, yoga, climbing, relationships between animals and humans based on gestures and bodily conduct, the socialization of young actors and actresses, non-heteronormative motherhood, and the socialization of children in sport and dance. In a case study based on the research on ballroom dancers, I show how to relate the theoretical requirements of symbolic interactionism with real human “flesh and bones.” I depict three ways of perceiving own bodies by dancers: a material, a tool, a partner; and, two processes their bodies are subjected to: sharpening and polishing a tool. I draw the link between the processual character of the body, of the symbolic interactionist theoretical perspective, and process-focused grounded theory methodology.

Celem artykułu jest ukazanie różnych funkcji tańca zespolonego z Wizją dramatyczną w wybranych sztukach okresu elżbietańskiego. W komediaoh romantyoznych Szekspira "Muoh Ado About Nothing" i "As You Like It" taniec - w zakońozeniu sztuki - wyraża idealną wizję rzeczywistości przedstawiając pary młodyoh zjednoczone w miłośoi i jakby przenosząc je do wymiarów ponadrzeczywistyoh. Ta symboliozna funkoja tańca wydaje się być związana z ówczesną koncepcją tzw. "muzyki sfer", tańca kosmicznego, który wraz z muzyką miał oznaozać harmonię we wszechświeoie. Również taniec i śpiew elfów w "A Midsummer Night's Dream" implikuje istnienie szozęśliwej rzeczywistości. Funkcja moralna tańca występuje w sztuce "Macbeth" (IV.’ ii). Tanieo czarownic staje się symbolem zwyoięstwa zła, co śoiśle łączy się ze stanem duchowym Makbeta, Jak również stanowi punkt kulminacyjny ioh działalności. Tak więc rola tematyczna i strukturalna tańoa jest tam niewątpliwa. Zarówno taniec czarownic w sztuce "Macbeth", jak i taniec i śpiew elfów w "A Midsummer Night's Dream" ma oharakter rytualny, przypominająoy tańce obrzędowe w kulturach prymitywnych. Odmienne znaczenie moralne ma taniec Cnót w sztuce "Henry VIII", Ukazują się one Katarzynie, pierwszej żonie króla, w śnie. Ioh taniec z wieńcem gloryfikują cnotliwe życie Katarzyny. Funkcje satyryczna tańca w dramacie elżbietańskim jest najlepiej przedstawiona w sztukach: "Cynthia's Revels" i "The Staple of News" Ben Jonsona. W pierwszej taniec występuje w masce, w której biorą udział dworzanie reprezentujący głupotę, lecz przebrani jako personifikaoje cnót. W "The Staple of News" ma miejsce satyryczny tanieo wielbicieli Pecunii. Podkreślono pochodzenie personifikacji pieniądza, zwracając jednocześnie uwagę na moralitet "The Trial of Treasure", w którym występuje żeńska odmiana personifikaoji pieniądza. Ukazano również związki między motywem tańca w sztuce Ben Jonsona a d a n s e m a o a b r e (tańcem śmierci) oraz s o t i e s . W sztuoe J, Forda "The Broken Heart" taniec funkcjonuje na płaszczyźnie psychologicznej, a nie moralnej. Symbolizuje on tutaj rzeczywistość zewnętrzną, którą dramaturg skontrastował z przeżyoiami wewnętrznymi bohaterki. Obraz sceniozny tańczącej Calanthy, która zaohowuje obojętność na wiadomośoi o śmieroi jej najbliższych, ohooiaż seroe jej pęka, staje się symbolem nowego modelu zachowania się arystokratycznej damy, zupełnie różnego od tego, któremu hołdowała bohaterka średniowiecznych romansów i którego ślady można zauważyć w sztuce "Troilus and Cressida" Shakespeare 'a.

The plot of Brian Friel's Molly Sweeney oscillates around the theme of perception, blindness and eye-sight recovery. Although visually impaired, the eponymous character is a self-reliant and independent person who is very active, both professionally and socially. What serves as the source of tragedy in the play is the male desire to compensate for Molly's physical disability perceived as a sign of deficiency and oddity that needs to be normalized. Prompted by her husband, Molly decides to undergo a surgery which gives her a chance to regain sight and, thus, become a part of the world of the visually abled. Yet, subsequent to the operation, Molly cannot adapt herself to the new reality and develops a medical condition called blindsight, which leads to her final alienation and confusion.Focusing predominantly on the main character of the play, this paper examines the ways in which Molly Sweeney experiences the surrounding world and seeks satisfaction and self-fulfilment through physical activities, such as swimming or dancing, which she vividly describes in her monologues. It explores the double nature of Molly who, despite her self-sufficiency, capacity for rebellion and a sense of autonomy, seems prone to male manipulation exercised at first by her father, later by her husband Frank and doctor Rice. Her expression of independence becomes particularly conspicuous in the scene of a party organized the night before her surgery when she performs a wild and frantic hornpipe, which serves as a form of momentary upheaval and a visualization of the outburst of extreme emotions. Although the dance is not presented onstage, it has a crucial function in the play, for it serves as its powerful climax, after which Molly experiences gradual deterioration.Interpreted in the context of the history of Irish dance, the mad hornpipe appears replete with meanings and allusions. Traditionally associated with human sexuality and the female element, dance was often treated by the Irish clergy with a great deal of distrust as a source of evil and moral corruption. Consequently, like in the case of the frenzied reel in another famous Frielian play, Dancing at Lughnasa, the limitless and unrestricted performance in the climactic scene of Molly Sweeney may be seen as a tool of subversion and female opposition to the Irish patriarchal order. It is a unique moment in which the protagonist seizes male power and gains full, though very temporary, control over her life.

The article presents researcher’s attempts, methodological problems and queries in embodiment research during a Grounded Theory Methodology based study on social world of ballroom dancers. The research has been conducted among ballroom dancers, flamenco dancers, belly dancers, dance instructors, choreographers and judges. One of the aspects of the research is social construction of embodiment. In the article I will present techniques and methods of research such as autoetnography, interview, observation, photo and video analysis as well as kind of results they may give and what is really studied when using these methods. I will also present how one experiences his/her body in this group. I will try to answer a question: what is the real result of researcher’s attempts in embodiment study in sociology; do we really study body, or its social practices, socially constructed individual experience; how deeply can we make the research when our object (somebody else’s body) is not entirely intersubjectively available for our recognition.

This collectively authored position paper discusses “hybrid” Shakespeares in Central and Eastern Europe, focusing on productions that offer formal experimentation and transnational perspectives. While their contexts remain regional, they provide an insight into how Shakspeare has been mobilised regionally. The paper consists of four distinct parts, each considering Shakespeare in a hybrid form: in opera, dance and musical theatre as well as puppetry in the transnational, regional context. The general discussions of Shakespeare’s presence/appropriation in these art forms are followed by case studies that illustrate the significance of hybridity that characterises Shakespeare in the Central and Eastern European transnational context. Our brief analyses and selected case studies suggest a need for a detailed study of Shakespeare and performative arts in Central and Eastern Europe that would concentrate on the transgressive impulse these theatrical blends realised through formal experiment and artistic innovation.

Prompted by the swift economic growth and the equally rapid decline of the authority of the local Catholic Church, the 1990s witnessed a significant change in the Irish attitude towards national culture and morality. One of the fields which best illustrates these transformations is dance, whose new face can be seen as symbolically representing the Irish transition from a country still bearing the stigma of de Valera’s ethical and cultural policies to a more liberal and open-minded European nation. The 1990s are the times of abolishing the taboos imposed years earlier on the Irish body perceived as an object of distrust that needs to be kept under constant surveillance to serve the nationalist cause as an epitome of proper moral conduct. With this in mind, the paper aims to discuss both the nature of the most crucial aspects of the revolution in the Irish dance in the 1990s and the effect this has exerted on the condition of the Irish stage. This will provide substantial background for the discussion of selected recent works of such playwrights as Brian Friel, Vincent Woods or Tom Kilroy, which make extensive use of dance, showing their contribution to challenging the literary, word-based character ofIrish drama and theatre.

The aim of this article is to present a specific interaction between a dancer and his/her body. Such a relationship usually emerges in later stages of dancers’ careers, and is accompanied by a small number of formal rules and standards present within a certain dance community. Therefore, it rather occurs among dancers of artistic than of sport genres of dance. Dancer’s relationship with the body is created in the process of negotiating and getting to know one’s body reactions to one’s activities. The body is treated by a dancer as an actor who makes own decisions, and who is sometimes not letting the dancer to fulfill his/ her intentions, for example, these connected with social norms in certain social groups. In order to show and to compare how diverse one’s interactions with one’s body might be, I will also discuss an issue of relation with one’s own body in the autotherapeutic process. Presentation of both these problems also demonstrates two different ways of communicating with one’s own body. This article presents outcomes of a qualitative research on social construction of embodiment, which was conducted with the use of Grounded Theory Methodology and qualitative research techniques, such as: unstructured interviews, video and photo elicited interviews, analysis of visual data, analytic autoethnography, participant and non-participant observation and desk research.

The article at hand presents and discusses the issue of gender stereotypization strategies during the socialization process of children practicing atypical gender sports, which is perceived as inappropriate to their gender. The outcomes of two qualitative studies among girls playing football and boys practicing ballroom dancing focus on various types of social influence of their families, coaches, and peers. The importance of parents’ role in reproducing or challenging stereotypical gender roles is outlined in the text. The strategies to which the children participating in atypical gender sports are subjected to include: stereotypization, destereotypization, apparent destereotyping, and hidden stereotyping. The benefits of participating in atypical gender sports are also discussed, particularly in terms of social and psychological profits.

The article offers an analysis and interpretation of the poem Zaklęte miasto [Enchanted city] from the volume Ballady i pieśni [Ballads and songs] by the Young Poland poet Edward Leszczyński. The poem is first analysed based on the oneiric convention. For this purpose the author refers to the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer and explains the symbolism of the wheel, which indicates the sense of entrapment in the world, a situation with no way out. The dreaming-wandering from Leszczyński’s poem, the gaining and losing of faith, is then examined in the context of August Strindberg’s A Dream Play. The two works, ostensibly so different, address with a similar kind of poetic “dreaming.” In both cases, the life in question is inauthentic, asleep, affected by a curse, kept under a spell. The last stanza of the poem indicates the Dionysian tradition, and therefore makes it necessary to refer to the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche and his idea of eternal return. The examination lead to the conclusion that Leszczyński’s work refers to the dual meaning of circularity, or rather two attitudes towards life. In the first case Schopenhauerian determinism is revealed, according to which life is a monotonous, enchaining, ominous dream. In the second case we are dealing with the worship life of Nietzschean provenance – one may, therefore, conclude that a curse can be a blessing and being asleep can be being awake, if we accept the eternal return.

Capoeira is a Brazilian martial-art dance. Capoeira combines elements of dance, folklore, martial arts, sport, ritual and training for unarmed combat. Many Brazilians regard it as a vital Afro-Brazilian contribution to their native culture. The genesis of this martial dance was said to have been a style that sprang up in the huts of Brazilian slaves. According to legend, capoeira back then was a series of blows requiring great physical strength. It constituted a rural style that enabled one to avoid the aggression of slave masters and slave hunters. From the outset, my research conception was based on the assumption that the study I was launching was of a pioneering nature. The objective of this study was to create a full picture of capoeira in Poland My choice of a research method was influenced by the awareness that I was dealing with a 'niche' community, a totally new phenomenon that has yet to entrench itself in Polands' popculture landscape. Anna Wyka believes that: When planning to study communities that are little known in a given society and radically depart from the ordinary, the researcher should predispose himself to a largely exploitative type of study and map out the research process accordingly. Such had to be the nature of qualitative research on alternative, pattern-setting communities, a socio-cultural phenomenon that emerged in the latter half of the 1970s as a total novelty. (...) Research into communities of that type appears necessary and cognitively attractive. The interpretive (qualitative, humanistic) paradigm, which runs counter to the normative (quantitative, positivistic) type, takes the humanistic coefficient into account. Introduced by Florian Znaniecki, that term refers to the significance of ascribing to people the phenomena they have personally experienced. The researcher therefore strives to adopt their point of view.

“Beautiful Women Dance Beautifully” versus “Objectification and Humiliation?” Discourse Analysis of Cheerleading in Respect of European Men’s Handball Championships in 2016

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki krytycznej analizy dyskursu przekazów medialnych dotyczących wypowiedzi szwedzkiego piłkarza ręcznego Tobiasa Karlsona na temat cheerleadingu jako aktywności uprzedmiatawiającej kobiety. Dominującym dyskursem w przekazach medialnych był dyskurs patriarchalny. W analizowanych materiałach podkreślano urodę ćwiczących zarówno w warstwie językowej tekstu, jak i za pomocą dołączanych materiałów wizualnych. Jedynie trzy artykuły przedstawiły problemy związane z oceną cheerleadingu. W artykule opisano również dyskusję na temat statusu cheerleadingu oraz przedstawień wizerunków cheerleaderek w perspektywie założeń feminizmu drugiej i trzeciej fali.
This article presents the results of a critical discourse analysis of media coverage concerning statements made by a Swedish handball player, T. Karlson, about cheerleading as an activity that objectifies women. The dominant discourse in the analyzed media coverage was the patriarchal discourse. The media coverage emphasized the beauty of the cheerleaders both in the linguistic layer of the text and through the accompanying visual material. Only three articles addressed issues related to the evaluation of cheerleading. This article also describes a discussion about the status of cheerleading and the coverage of cheerleader images from the perspective of second- and third-wave feminism.

Although the popularity of recreational pole dancing continues to gain momentum, its prevailing association with the erotic sphere and resulting stereotypes shape it as a borderline activity. Notably, the way pole dancing is approached and enacted elucidates how bodies, especially female embodiment, are socially constructed and controlled. Thus, to look at that issue from recreational female polers’ perspectives, this article sheds light on how their understandings of the body evolve with their engagement in the leisure activity at hand. That process is analyzed in the context of how women deal with tensions that arise while they navigate between the internalized societal expectations concerning desired femininity and personal agency. Drawing on ethnographic and interview data from pole dance studios in Poland, I discuss how polers’ perspectives on their bodies change from personal and interactional ‘limitations’ to embracing their bodies as interactional partners with whom to achieve their goals. In the process of learning by doing, women get to know their bodies and develop with them a relationship based on trust. Subsequently, growing to understand the bodies as their substantial selves that functionality allows them to achieve the ‘impossible’ as one empowers women. At the same time, I highlight how the process of espousing alternative perceptions of one’s body unfolds under the umbrella of an internalized frame of meanings concerning female embodiment that lures women to fit societal expectations. The interplay between the two sheds light on how female polers navigate toward reclaiming their self-confidence from the clutches of the critical social gaze while negotiating the notion of their bodies. Compelling in that regard is how relying on erotic associations with recreational pole dancing in terms of inciting empowerment through a sexual agency, as some studios do, plays out and factors into female pole dancers’ experiences concerning their leisure activity.
