    Many (World Heritage) cultural landscapes are a living environment for thousands of inhabitants, visitors, entrepreneurs, farmers and other land users. In order to manage such landscapes we have to consider the legal framework and the reality of the regional planning culture. The ‘landscape of regional players’ consists of a wide range of stakeholders. How should regions tackle natural and cultural heritage as an integrated part of regional development? The discussion of Austria’s Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut World Heritage region involves vertical and horizontal dimensions of governance, including politics, administration, private businesses and civil society.

    By the case study conducted in the Greek UNESCO sites, it was revealed that, despite the fact that most of the monuments are subjects of multiple zoning, little is accomplished for their spatial protection. This is either because zoning and planning launched by the Ministry for the Environment is absent or taking too long to get approved or because zoning deriving from the Ministry of Culture is void of spatial regulations. This means that on the one hand the Ministry for the Environment should proceed at a faster pace to the elaboration of Local Spatial Plans that are necessary especially in the case of monuments in rural settings, while on the other hand the Ministry of Culture should immediately proceed to the revision of Protection Zones A and B, so they fall into the guidelines of the new Law 3028 and they acquire spatial restrictions and regulations; a condition that can only be achieved with the collaboration among Spatial Planners and Archaeologists and among competent bodies.

    A typical geographers' approach to tourism is to emphasise the analysis of spatial flows and space uses and the synthesis of territorial coherence between people, place and product. The renewed interest in the territorial aspects of tourism can be seen as a response to globalisation on the one hand and the search for unique, authentic and grass-rooted experience on the other. In recent tourism studies the focus and methods shift from a description of patterns to the analysis of processes of change that are induced by tourism (touristification). Understanding the forces that are transforming cultural landscapes (urban and rural) into tourismscapes is a crucial condition for visionary planning and responsible management of regions and places. Some reflections on the future research agenda in geo-tourism will be included.

    This article concerns the definitions, worldwide views and Polish literature on the nature of cultural, administrative and political landscape and in this context discusses the nature and functioning of the political region. As examples of the transition of political regions, illustrating the discussion from the first part of the article, there were selected the changes of the administrative landscape and the world political map at the turn of the centuries in the post-Soviet space, as well as in Africa, India and Canada.
    W artykule dokonano przeglądu definicji oraz poglądów w światowej i polskiej litera-turze na istotę krajobrazu kulturowego, krajobrazu administracyjnego i krajobrazu politycznego, i w tym kontekście przedstawiono istotę oraz funkcjonowanie regionu po-litycznego. Jako przykłady przemian regionów politycznych ilustrujących dyskusję z pierwszej części artykułu wybrano zmiany krajobrazu administracyjnego i mapy politycznej na przełomie XX i XXI w. w przestrzeni postradzieckiej, a także w Afryce, Indiach i Kanadzie.

    The objective of this paper is to present the effects of general changes in land use in recent decades on plant cover structure in Poland. The paper is focused on spontaneous processes that occur in agricultural and forest areas being no longer under human pressure. Studies carried out in different geobotanical regions of Poland demonstrated that the directions and range of dynamic changes in plant cover are similar across the country. The formation of secondary forest phytocenoses, on the lands delivered from human activity is a common ecological process observed today in the agricultural landscape. In the dynamics of forest vegetation the basic process is regeneration after ceased use, and the introduction of legal protection.

    In this analysis, forms of archaeology popularisation with a spatial representation and its output, have been evaluated. On the basis of chosen examples, critical analysis of dominating forms of narration in the archaeology popularisation discourse, especially taking into consideration their landscape aspect (historical geography), has been performed. Permanent and ephemeral relic-preserved spaces and/or heritagescape, have been specified.
    W opracowaniu poddano rozważaniu problematykę, posiadających reprezentacje przestrzennie, formy popularyzowania archeologii i jej dorobku. Na wybranych przykładach dokonano krytycznego omówienia dominujących narracji w popularyzacji archeologii, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem ich aspektu krajobrazowego, za sprawą włączenia do analizy perspektywy geograficznej (geografii historycznej). Wyróżniono podział na stałe i efemeryczne przestrzenie zachowanych reliktowo i/lub konstruowanych krajobrazów dziedzictwa (heritagescape).

    The obligation to prepare landscape audits registered in the Landscape Act is the result of the implementation of the European Landscape Convention. Limiting the audit to the regional scale (mesoregions) is not conducive to the identification of the local landscape specificity, especially with regard to its cultural, compositional and perceptual aspects. If landscape audits are to be an effective tool for protection of landscape in spatial planning, it is necessary also to conduct them for lower-order units (microregions). Such strategy would be consistent with the scale of local planning and take into account the perspective of a human – the observer. The cultural, compositional and perceptual aspects of landscape greatly affect the sense of belonging to a place and its social acceptance. These elements should constitute the basis for its proper protection and development at the local level, especially in relation to the landscape not considered as “priority”, but to the “ordinary”, “everyday” landscape. The article is an overview of examples of application of landscape architecture methods that take into account the local specificity of space and can be included in local planning.
    Zapisany w ustawie krajobrazowej obowiązek sporządzania audytów krajobrazowych jest efektem wdrażania Europejskiej Konwencji Krajobrazowej. Ograniczenie audytu do skali regionalnej (mezoregionów) nie sprzyja identyfikacji lokalnej specyfiki krajobrazu, zwłaszcza w odniesieniu do jego aspektów kulturowych, kompozycyjnych i percepcyjnych. Jeżeli audyt krajobrazowy ma być rzeczywistym narzędziem służącym ochronie krajobrazu w planowaniu przestrzennym, niezbędne jest sporządzanie go również dla jednostek niższego rzędu (mikroregionów), kompatybilnych ze skalą planowania miejscowego, uwzględniając perspektywę człowieka – obserwatora. Aspekty kulturowe, kompozycyjne i percepcyjne w znacznym stopniu decydują o przywiązaniu do miejsca oraz społecznej akceptacji krajobrazu. Powinny one stanowić podstawę prawidłowej jego ochrony i kształtowania na poziomie lokalnym, zwłaszcza w odniesieniu do krajobrazu nie uznawanego za „priorytetowy”, lecz „zwyczajny”, „codzienny”. Artykuł stanowi przegląd przykładów zastosowania metod z zakresu architektury krajobrazu, uwzględniających lokalną specyfikę przestrzeni i wykazujących możliwość jej uwzględnienia w planowaniu miejscowym.

    The main purpose of this article was to present contemporary narratives (social and scientific discourse) about the Evangelical cemeteries of Masuria, based on the examples of the activities under two projects, whose common denominator are the restoration of memory and the protection of cultural heritage. The present elaboration concerns selected issues of the functioning of the tangible cultural heritage in the Masuria region (in Pasym and one of the deserted villages). This piece of writing also describes how the spaces of Protestant cemeteries can be interpreted anew, especially as a result of documentative works.
    Głównym celem artykułu było przedstawienie współczesnych narracji (dyskursu społecznego i naukowego) na temat mazurskich cmentarzy ewangelickich. Temat zrealizowano w oparciu o przykłady działań dokonywanych w ramach dwóch projektów, których głównym założeniem jest przywrócenie pamięci o dziedzictwie kulturowym oraz objęcie go ochroną. Opracowanie dotyczy wybranych zagadnień z zakresu funkcjonowania materialnego dziedzictwa kulturowego na Mazurach (w szczególności w Pasymiu oraz jednej z opuszczonych wsi). W artykule omówiono jak wciąż na nowo interpretować można przestrzenie cmentarzy protestanckich, zwłaszcza w świetle wyników prowadzonych prac dokumentacyjnych.
