Opis:
The article examines the debate as to the direct influence of Bulgarian and Byzantine Bogomilism upon the doctrine of the Bosnian Church. The author traces some scholarly views pro et contra the presence, in the Bosnian-Slavic sources, of traces of neo-Manichean views on the Church, the Patristic tradition, and the sacraments. In analyzing two marginal glosses in the so-called Srećković Gospel in the context of some anti-Bogomil Slavic and Byzantine texts, the article attempts to establish the importance of Bulgarian and Byzantine Bogomilism for the formation of certain dogmatic and ecclesiological views in the doctrine of the Bosnian Church: the negative attitude towards the orthodox Churches, especially the Roman Catholic Church; the rejection of the sacrament of baptism and of St. John the Baptist; the rejection of the sacrament of confession, and hence, of the Eucharist. These doctrinal particularities of the Bosnian Church warrant the assertion that its teachings and liturgical practice differed significantly from the dogmatics and practice of the orthodox Churches. Without being a copy of the Bogomil communities, the Bosnian Church was certainly heretical, and neo-Manichean influences from the Eastern Balkans were an integral element of the Bosnian Christians’ faith.

Opis:
The office of a steward was known in Egypt back in the time of the Pharaohs. It appears that in the East, this function first emerged in the structures of the Egyptian Church. The Canons of Pseudo-Athanasius, which probably come from the first half of the 5th century, show the author’s views on how the church stewards fulfilled their duties. Pseudo-Athanasius not only outlined the criteria to be met by these administrators, but also indicated the date by which, in his opinion, they should be solemnly appointed. In addition, this source informs us how these church administrators were supposed to fulfill their obligation to collect and secure church property for the Church’s charitable activities. The author emphasized that the steward played a key role in how efficiently actions in support of the poor were implemented, however, he also observed that these tasks were fully dependent on the will of the local bishop. Pseudo-Athanasius also devoted considerable attention to the important problem of the dishonesty of some administrators. Therefore, he postulated that the vaults and granaries should be secured with seals by a commission and that they be opened in the same way. The author had an interesting idea to create a reserve in the treasury, which, in the event of a cataclysm or other calamity, would provide food for the community. Undoubtedly, the Canons of Pseudo-Athanasius are an extremely valuable source that deepens our knowledge about the work of church stewards at that time. There are numerous indications that the author included his own observations in them. However, it should be remembered that the description of the steward’s duties presented here is a model proposition, therefore, in order to obtain a more complete picture, it should be confronted with other sources from the era.

Kościół św. Wawrzyńca w Rossoszycy (gmina Warta) to jedna z ciekawszych budowli sakralnych XVIII w. znajdująca się w diecezji włocławskiej. Piękny, modrzewiowy kościół przechodzi obecnie gruntowny remont. Wyposażenie kościoła pochodzące w głównej mierze z XVIII w. to trzy ołtarze z wyjątkowymi rzeźbami, prawdopodobnie dłuta zakładu snycerskiego Franza Eytnera, artysty pochodzącego z Kalisza,słynącego z ekspresyjności rzeźb. Na uwagę zasługuje również XIX wieczna, drewniana ambona jak i prospekt organowy
The Church of St. Lawrence in Rossoszyca (municipality of Warta) is among the most interesting and valuable 18th century sacral buildings in Włocławek diocese. The beautiful building constructed of larch wood is now undergoing extensive restoration. The equipment of the church, mostly from the 18th century, includes three altars, probably created in the wood-carving workshop of franz Eytner, an artist from Kalisz, famous for his expressive sculptures.

Church Slavonic Psalter
‘Athonite’ redaction

Opis:
Modern scholarship on the textual history of Church Slavonic biblical translation recognizes two distinct revisions of the Church Slavonic Psalter from the early fourteenth century, Redaction III (sometimes called the ‘Athonite’ redaction) and Redaction IV, known only in the Norov psalter manuscript. Although they are both attested from the same period and in manuscripts of similar Bulgarian provenance, these two redactions are in some respects systematically different in their linguistic character, their approach to translational issues and their Greek textual basis. In the light of A.A. Turilov’s observation that the Mihanović Psalter, possibly the earliest witness to Redaction III, is written in the same hand as the greater part of the Norov Psalter, this paper examines the textual antecedents of the two redactions and the importance of the Mihanović Psalter as a link between them.

W artykule przedstawiano bogatą działalność fundacyjną Jakuba Biedy Chrostkowica (zm. 1630), mansjonarza, następnie proboszcza i dziekana małogoskiego.
The article presents the rich foundation activity of Jakub Bieda Chrostkowic (d. 1630), a mansionary (lower rank chaplain), then a parish priest and dean of Małogoszcz. In the years 1591–1624, this clergyman built as many as three brick churches in Małogoszcz: the parish church of St. Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the filial church of St. Stanislaus and the hospital church of Holy Cross. The first two have been preserved in good condition and serve the inhabitants to this day, the last one – destroyed by the Russian army during the Kościuszko Uprising – was demolished in the beginning of the 19th century. Moreover, Rev. Chrostkowic erected in the city the house for the mansionaries (today’s parsonage), a house for the hospital parish priest, and a poorhouse called Bethany. He funded a scholarship for young people studying at the Krakow Academy. Finally, he erected St. Anne prebend and took care of the salary for the hospital prebendary. Such a significant number of religious and charitable foundations effectively prevented the presence of Reformist attitudes in Małogoszcz, which were clearly visible in this part of Lesser Poland.

The medieval parish church in Szadek, dedicated to the Holy Virgin Mary and St James the Apostle, is the town’s oldest historical monument and its most valuable relic of the past splendour. Restoration of its elevations has been in progress for several years. Renovation work has been completed on the walls of the presbytery and the northern elevation of the church with its annexes, i.e. sacristy, treasury and chapel under the invocation of Our Lady of the Rosary. The conservation and research work resulted in restoring the long-forgotten splendour of the church and in a number of important discoveries. It was found that in the first half of the 14th century a two-bay presbytery was built as well as a sacristy and an adjoining room intended for a treasury. In the next stage of construction work a threeaisle pseudo-basilica church was built, to be given a new form a hundred years later. The most spectacular discovery was identification of the original architectural design of the Renaissance chapel from the mid-16th century, dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary.

Opis:
John Chrysostom was not only one of the most prolific and influential authors of late antiquity but also a renown preacher, exegete, and public figure. His homilies and sermons combined the classical rhetorical craft with some vivid imagery from everyday life. He used descriptions, comparisons, and metaphors that were both a rhetorical device and a reference to the real world familiar to his audience. From 9th century onwards, many of Chrysostom’s works were translated into Old Church Slavonic and were widely used for either private or communal reading. Even if they had lost the spontaneity of the oral performance, they still preserved the references to the 4th-century City, to the streets and the homes in a distant world, transferred into the 10th-century Bulgaria and beyond. The article examines how some of these urban images were translated and sometimes adapted to the medieval Slavonic audience, how the realia and the figures of speech were rendered into the Slavonic language and culture. It is a survey on the reception of the oral sermon put into writing, and at the same time, it is a glimpse into the late antique everyday life in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The description consists of two documents depicting the state of real property, size of the area and the income of the parish in Szadek in 1858. These documents were drawn up under a decree of the government of the Polish Kingdom. The first of them describes the church and the buildings belonging to the parish. It lists in 19 points the real estate comprising the church property. Each description states the size of a building, its condition, material that it was built of and the value of insurance in case of fire. The second document describes the parish land in Szadek, Bobownia and Ogrodzim. It contains information about the size of each piece of land, its character, and type of land use (e.g. arable land, meadow, vegetable and fruit garden, waste land, road, water reservoir, built up area). The presented documents enrich our knowledge about the history of the Szadek parish, providing information on its possessions in the middle of the 19th century.

The church under the invocation of the Holy Virgin Mary and St James the Apostle, destroyed by the Teutonic Knights in 1331, was soon reconstructed, most likely in a wooden version. Consecrated in 1335, the church existed in this form for over a century, until it was replaced in 1438–1448 by a church built of brick. In 1451 it was decorated with paintings by Jan of Wrocław. In 1551, Rev. Rafał Wargawsk covered the church with roof at his own expense. The 17th century was a period when Szadek was governed by starosts of the Wierzbowski family (coat of arms Jastrzębiec), who treated the church as family necropolis. Lack of repair and conservation caused considerable destruction of the church building. Restoration work was undertaken by Rev. Michał Zdzieniecki in 1788. The year 1802 brought a disaster – a fire destroyed the roof and the tower, only the walls and vaulting remained. A temporary shingle roof prevented a complete destruction of the building. The restoration which took place in 1868 changed the architectural appearance of the church building. Successive repair and restoration works were carried out in 1923–1924 and 1969–1971, but they did not change the outer appearance of the church.

The focus of the present paper is the terms θεωρία and ὀπτασία presented in the Greek text of Life of St Anthony the Great by St Athanasius of Alexandria and their translation representation in the Old Church Slavonic versions of the text. The terms are approached diachronically, i.e. in through history of Classical and post-classical Greek literature, thus providing the necessary cultural background for their usage and context. Each term, then, is commented in its exact attestation in the Life, providing also the corresponding translations and their wider context. The translation renderings are further analyzed in perspective of the lexical material in the classical Old Church Slavonic corpus as well as with material from texts and sources, thus aiming at contextualizing them in wider lexicological perspective.

Saint Apostles Peter and Paul’s Church in Grodzisk is an interesting example of a church founded by a nobleman. It was erected at the beginning of the 17th century by the castellan of Sieradz, Jan Rudnicki, who had five daughters and no male heir. He decided to build a temple when he reached an old age and knew that he would not have any more children. Originally,, the church had a much more modest form than today. Its present appearance is the result of several reconstructions carried out in the 19th century. Initially it only had a rectangular nave, a semicircular closed chancel and a sacristy. It is an example of a successful combination of architectural forms rooted in the Middle Ages, still very popular in the Uniejów deanery, with Renaissance elements inside. The church is a testimony to the position and wealth of its founder and his concern to commemorate the family and ensure that it will be remembered long after the death of the last Rudnicki.

The library of the parish church in Szadek - being the seat of Szadek Decanate and belonging in 1818 to Gniezno Archdiocese - was referred to, with listings of all the books that it contained, in parish documents (canonical Visitations of the parish) of 1762, 1779 and 1788. It was mainly used by local priests. After less than half a century of existence, it was destroyed, probably in a church fire in 1802. The registers list some 35 books, most likely in printed form. The themes of this collection of books point to it being the property of one of the parish priests, donated after his death to the parish. Nearly half of the books are works useful in preaching: collections of sermons and examples. The remaining publications, too, are intended to help priests in their pastoral work, religious instruction and preaching. Among Polish parish libraries of the 18th century, this collection falls within the category of small libraries (1-50 books).
