This article draws on qualitative data of U.S. high school students considering their place in the adult world; the purpose is to investigate Jeffrey Arnett’s (2000) concept of “emerging adulthood” as a new stage of life course. Drawing on interviews and observational data collected around the time when Arnett’s notion of emerging adulthood started to take hold, I use intersectional interpretive lens in order to highlight how race and gender construct emerging adulthood as high school students move out of adolescence. I consider Arnett’s thesis twofold. First, when emerging adulthood is examined intersectionally, young people reveal that – rather than being distinct periods that can simply be prolonged, delayed, or even reached – life stages are fluid and constantly in flux. Second, since efforts to mitigate against uncertain futures characterizes the Millennial generation, I argue that the process of guarding against uncertainty reorders, questions or reconfigures the characteristics and stages that conventionally serve as markers of life course. I conclude that the identity exploration, indecision, and insecurity associated with emerging adulthood can also be understood as related to how the youth reveal and reshape the life course intersectionally.

After the outbreak of the Arab Spring and, above all, the intensification of the Syrian crisis with Ankara starting to engage in a political confrontation with Assad’s Syria, Tehran tried to exploit its historic strategic alliance with Damascus in a search for projecting its influence abroad. As Turkey has been facing more and more hardships and experiencing political isolation, Iran seemed to be more comfortable with its external environment, benefiting from a convergence of interests with Russia. However, the advent of ISIS created further disarray in the region, presenting opportunities for countries to cooperate especially for Erdogan’s new Turkey which was still focused on fighting Kurds.

This paper presents a qualitative analysis of women’s experiences of call to Christian pastoral ministry as a second career—a mid-life turning point. Drawing on 44 semi-structured interviews with pastors of different denominations, I look at women’s stories of call through the lens of interpretive theory to analyze how women create meanings around this life altering event, and how they construct past experiences in light of these decisions. I employ George Herbert Mead’s theory of time to analyze how women afford prior secular work experiences sacred meaning in light of their subsequent “pastoral call” experience. This paper attempts to arrive at a better understanding of women’s experience of entering pastoral ministry, as well as their past and future life trajectories.

Urban design schemes accompanied by avant-garde design of space have been an outcome of economic growth of cities and countries in many periods of time. At the beginning of the 21st century, Nieuw Crooswijk in Rotterdam was the largest area involved in nationally launched policies. Many times the conflicts surrounding the plan were in the news, particularly concerning the aim to attract higher incomes. Gentrification, with displacement of present and original residents forms a central issue and the discussions in Nieuw Crooswijk fit within the more general urban landscape and language of urban regeneration in Europe.

W Uniwersytecie w Tampere podejmuje się badania poświęcone starzeniu się. Obok celów poznawczych pragnie się uzyskać praktyczne wyniki. Artykuł przedstawia teoretyczne i społeczne przesłanki projektu badań. W Finlandii obserwuje się wzrost ludzi starej generacji do 12% całej populacji. Rodzi to istotny problem społeczny - rosnącą klientelę usług w zakresie zdrowia i emerytur, a także, w płaszczyźnie indywidualnej, problem adaptacji do życia w starości. W projekcie badawczym poszukuje się perspektywy socjologicznej, m. in. relacji między starością a innymi przeobrażeniami społeczeństwa fińskiego. Autor odwołuje się do amerykańskich antropologów Amoss i Harvella, według których ludzie starzy nie są pozytywnymi podmiotami działającymi, lecz dążą do właściwej im pozycji w bliższym i dalszym otoczeniu. Rozważa się treść pojęcia społeczna starość przyjmując, że starszy wiek stanowi określoną fazę w życiu jednostki społecznie ustrukturyzowaną. jest to zatem określona pozycja socjetalna z prawami i obowiązkami. Społeczne starzenie stanowi całość złożoną z procesu przejścia do pozycji starej osoby i do identyfikacji z nią. Socjalizacja do starości może być aktywna i twórcza. W badaniach będą wykorzystane różnorodne metody i procedury. Jako materiał posłużą statystyki i dokumenty oraz wyniki dotychczasowych badań (zwłaszcza nt. przeobrażeń rodziny i warunków życia). Szczególną wagę przywiązuje się do różnic regionalnych. W centrum uwagi badaczy znajduje się sposób w jaki starzy ludzie doświadczają swoją sytuację. Przewiduje się przeprowadzenie wywiadów kwestionariuszowych z próbą 1000 osób oraz serię wywiadów wolnych zarówno z ludźmi starymi, jak też o ludziach starych.

The aging of population is largely caused by falling fertility. To find out how fertility affects the share of the elderly people in the population, four variants of the UN World Population Prospects 2010 for Poland and Europe were examined, as well as selected indicators of population aging. The relatively high fertility and comparatively short life expectancy in Poland until the end of 1980s explain why its population aged much more slowly than other populations in Europe. In the last two decades the share of the elderly people kept increasing, mostly because of the deep decline in the number of births. For almost a decade now Poland has been one of the demographically old countries, although the aging process is relatively less pronounced in Poland than in Italy or Germany. In the medium variant of the UN forecast Polish fertility will be growing for the next few decades, but its level will not be high enough to ensure the minimum population replacement. Only in the high variant its growth will lead to rates of population reproduction higher than the minimum level. This situation might take place as early as the first half of the 2020s. The analysis of particular indicators illustrating the progress of demographic aging leads to a conclusion that even high fertility will not rejuvenate the age structure of Polish population, but it may considerably slow down the process of its aging.

Aravind Adiga’s novel The White Tiger encapsulates the complexities of identity formation in a milieu effected by neo-capitalism. The novel, for many, is about a new identity made available to the hitherto marginalized in the form of opportunities unveiled by market forces. It is also perceived as a registration of the frustration and anger of the deprived that has become conscious of the new possibilities. Understandably, interpreting the novel on these lines leads to the identification of the protagonist Balram as a champion of the marginalized, settling scores with the oppressive system. However, there are far subtler notes in the protagonist’s attitude to these sweeping changes than the simple and one dimensional approach of an achiever who is able to break the “rooster coop” and revel at the reversal of fortune. Neither is it a representative voice of the suppressed class turning the table on its oppressor by using the opportunities offered by the global market. The “notes” of the voices that emerge as Balram, the boy from darkness, moves up the ladder to become Ashok Sharma, the entrepreneur hiding in light, not only lack symphony but also create a distinct dissonance. Clearly, the discord in the changing notes is brought about by the forces that changed the world he lives in-a neo-capitalist world. The whole process of Balram turning into Ashok Sharma is a neocapitalist coup.

Warsaw and its metropolitan area seem an interesting testing ground for research on the phenomenon of residential segregation in the context of the evolution of housing policy, since the city has been subject to significant changes as a result of historical events. Each of these contributed to alterations in the level and the character of residential segregation. The goal of this article is to answer the following question: Was the changing housing policy in Warsaw and the surrounding metropolitan area during the transformation period and afterwards accompanied by a modification of the segregation structure and what differences can be noticed in the whole of the metropolitan area and in the city itself?

The influence of the spatial relation on the stock market is becoming more frequently the subject of a discussion. Efforts to pinpoint the relation between the dis- tance and the investors choices are relevant to both the intra- and intermarket connec- tions. With the latter one, spatial dependencies may function as a shock transmission channel, resulting with the contagion effect. The object of this paper is to present the results of the research on the influence of spatial and economic distance on the correlation of selected European stock markets during the 2007–2009 crisis period. In order to verify the hypothesis regarding the influ- ence of the spatial relations on the stock market correlation DCC GARCH model was used among with spatial analysis tools.

In last time definition of civil liability was very wide, because of our adaptation to EC rules. That mean in case of any losses with casualties, body hurt, lost of gain and other, costumer has right to demand compensations which could be very high. Insurance company selling insurance policy agree to take over responsibility of random losses. But this liability is limited to, because I.C. is no responsible for damages cause by war. strike, done by purpose by owner. In 2004 year in Poland is several dozen companies which can help accident victims to demand compensation. This firms are very fluent in assets valuations, compensations for the cases. But in many cases (especially with responsibility for product) court trial is very long.

The article synthesises the results from observations of ice phenomena on Warta River in Uniejów in years 1947−2012. From beginning of 1980s average time, in yearly perspective, in which the river was frozen was over two months, with ice cover appearing almost annualy. The years in which the river was frozen the longest are were 1947, 1954−1955, 1962−1964 and 1979, which coincides with the occurrences of coldest and longest winters in this region of Poland. The research shows however, that the ice phenomena on Warta River in vicinity of Uniejów, are determined not only by climate factors, but also, in a great extent, by Jeziorsko Reservoir, from the very beginning of its utilization. Construction of this reservoir, completed in 1986, resulted in a decrease of the duration of ice occurrences by nearly three times, and the complete freezing of the river became a rare phenomenon.
