Opis:
Computer games are an interactive form of entertainment that is popular with younger and younger players. Therefore researchers are actively seeking information on the consequences of pursuing this type of pastime. At the beginning, the researchers’ attention was focused mainly on the negative aspects of gaming. Nowadays, more and more benefits related to this activity are being indicated. In 2014, Granic, Lobel and Engels published an article on the benefits of playing computer games. The researchers focused on four areas: cognitive, motivational, emotional, and social. They wanted to inspire new research on mental health benefits of gaming by pointing to various research reports they selected. This paper aims to present the research directions explored in recent years by researchers who strive to describe the positive and negative consequences of gaming. I present the main directions and examples of research in these areas, highlighting the ambiguity of the current results. Problematic areas related to gaming include aggression and violence, addiction, weakening of social relations, experiencing undesirable emotions, sexualization, racial prejudice, and racial discrimination. The indicated opportunities and benefits are the strengthening of cognitive, motor, emotional, and social competences.

Facing the economic crisis (began in 2007) managers and political leaders pay more attention to the postulate of socially responsible business. The axiological turn gives new possibilities to implement ethical standards in the sphere of economy. Alas, at the same time, this task evokes the following problems. Firstly, as social researchers, we need to know how to compose heterogeneous axiological systems (to join rules of ethics with the imperative of economic efficiency). Secondly, as market participants, we have to find the formula of mutual understanding (being seen as precondition of our ethical claims).

The paper sets forward to justify the objective necessity of creation and distribution of benefits of the social consumption fund in socialized companies. The author proceeds from an assumption that the company Is not only a production unit in the economic system but also a subject implementing tasks of the social policy including also the function of the social consumption fund. In the further part of the paper there is made an attempt at determination of qualification criteria of the company’s contribution to the social consumption fund. It becomes necessary to isolate the company's expenditure in this area in order to assess utilization of resources in accordance with functions of this fund at the company's level.

Relations between sociology and cinema span over a hundred years. The author’s task is to reflect on this fact and, as a result, to present her own theoretical and methodological concept. Constructive framing is done in a historical perspective supplemented with methodological reflections using a variety of existing materials, scientific publications (library query) and the author’s own analyses. The basic research question concerns the state of the subdiscipline: what methodological, empirical and theoretical proposals have been developed; to what extent are they currently up to date or cultivated by scholars? A look at the broad heritage of the sociology of film and cinema allows us to see the gaps to be filled in in the area of empiricism and theory. This article does not address the reasons for this state of affairs in great detail, but merely indicates that an in-depth study of relationships and embedding data in the light of Bruno Latour’s actor-network theory or Pierre Bourdieu’s field concept could shed light on the issue from a different angle, in this case – the scope of the sociology of knowledge. One of the conclusions is that the sociology of film has a faint presence in the field of the sociology of art. The author tries to revive the old postulates of the Polish sociologists of culture and film (including A. Kłoskowska, C. Prasek, K. Żygulski), drawing theoretical inspiration from the philosophy of Ernst Cassirer and also using experience from her own research. What emerges as a result is a research model proposal (along with a research tool) in the field of the sociology of film/cinema, aimed at the cognition and comparison of images of reality.
Związki socjologii i kina trwają ponad sto lat. Zadaniem autorki tekstu jest refleksja nad tym faktem, a w efekcie prezentacja własnej koncepcji teoretyczno-metodologicznej. Konstruktywne ramowanie dokonuje się w perspektywie historycznej uzupełnianej o refleksje metodologiczne z wykorzystaniem różnorodnych materiałów zastanych, publikacji naukowych (kwerenda biblioteczna) oraz własnych analiz. Podstawowe pytanie badawcze dotyczy stanu subdyscypliny: jakie propozycje metodologiczne, empiryczne i teoretyczne zostały wypracowane; na ile są one współcześnie aktualne, czyli uprawiane przez uczonych? Spojrzenie na szerokie dziedzictwo socjologii filmu i kina pozwala dostrzec „białe plamy” w obszarze empirii i teorii. W niniejszym artykule nie podejmowano szerzej powodów tego stanu rzeczy, jedynie zasygnalizowano, iż dogłębne zbadanie relacji i osadzenie danych w świetle teorii aktora-sieci Bruna Latoura czy koncepcji pola Pierre’a Bourdieu mogłoby rzucić światło na zagadnienie z innej strony, w tym przypadku – z zakresu socjologii wiedzy. Jednym z wniosków jest nikła obecność socjologii filmu w polu socjologii sztuki. Autorka próbuje ożywić stare postulaty rodzimych socjologów kultury i filmu (m.in. A. Kłoskowskiej, C. Praska, K. Żygulskiego), czerpiąc inspirację teoretyczną z filozofii Ernsta Cassirera, a także wykorzystując doświadczenia z własnych badań. W efekcie wyłania się propozycja modelu badań (wraz z narzędziem badawczym) z zakresu socjologii filmu/kina zorientowanych na poznanie i porównanie obrazów rzeczywistości.

In the very middle of Poland the erection of a big quarry of brown coal is begun as well as great power station which will strongly affect environment of the region covering 20 000 km!. The biological investigations carried out in the years 1948/1980, i.e. the quarry was started, are summarized. The authors propose a new program of investigations and suggest that the region may be a suitable object for further ecological studies on biota and ecosystems, influenced with industrial pressure.

The article is dedicated to studying communicative and pragmatic evidential constructions in newspaper political narrative. Based on the assumption that a communicative subject is represented as chain cooperation (“orderer” – editor – journalist – source – journalist), markers of evidentiality are matched with reference to the information about the events described on behalf of the source of relevant information. Correlation between an evidential discourse marker and an indication of the source of information in the narrative, as well as the possibility of indirect deictic reference to second-hand information with the help of modal verbs and lexical markers have been identified. Using evidential constructions in newspapers is determined pragmatically and connected with the narrator’s desire to distance him- or herself from unreliable or axiologically negative factors.

The main goals of this text are to answer the question of whether sport shooting should be treated as a sport and to convince readers that shooting can be an interesting subject within the sociology of sport. Sport shooting is an activity that is dynamically developing and has engaged more and more people in recent years in Poland. The article presents the history and specificity of this sport discipline, including the presentation of the competition and the classification of people participating in the social world of shooters. The text also contains preliminary conclusions on social phenomena concerning the shooting environment and methodological considerations related to barriers occurring in the study of this environment.
Głównym celem tego tekstu jest odpowiedź na pytanie, czy strzelectwo sportowe należy traktować jako sport, oraz przekonanie czytelników, że strzelectwo może być interesującym przedmiotem socjologii sportu. Strzelectwo sportowe to dynamicznie rozwijająca się aktywność, która w ostatnich latach angażuje w Polsce coraz więcej osób. Artykuł przedstawia historię i specyfikę tej dyscypliny sportu, w tym prezentuje dyscypliny sportowe oraz klasyfikację osób uczestniczących w świecie społecznym strzelców. Tekst zawiera również wstępne wnioski dotyczące zjawisk społecznych dotyczących środowiska strzeleckiego oraz rozważania metodologiczne związane z barierami występującymi w badaniach tego środowiska.

Ethical dilemmas encountered by the authoress using participant observation in a house of social assistance for incapacitated persons are discussed. Two exemplary cases are analysed: 1) an elderly man with temporarily cured epilepsy developed a strong attachment to the researcher in the course of biographic interview; when she could not come for an appointed meeting he was so upset that fits re-appeared; 2) an invalid woman who claimed to suffer from acute pain in her leg asked the researcher to report it directly to the doctor which was contrary to the rules and could antagonize the nurses who suspected simulation. This illustrates difficulties caused by conflicting expectations directed to a researcher by various categories of persons involved in social relations with her/him in the course of research.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to discuss the place and role of the intercultural encounter (IE) in communication and education, including in foreign language teaching. Firstly, I present the IE as a communicative event and define it using terms developed by ethnographers of speech (communication). Secondly, I discuss the concepts contained in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Companion Volume with New Descriptors (CEFR 2018) relating to the mediation of text, concepts, and communication, and present the original definition of mediation in intercultural contacts. That section emphasises that mediation does not only act as an intermediary facilitating the course of a communication event but also as an “understanding interview with oneself.” Next, I discuss theoretical concepts related to the IE, I describe it as a tool used in teaching and intercultural education, and I present a description of the IE by a student of the Teaching Polish as a Foreign/Second Language course at the University of Lodz. Finally, I analyse an example description of an IE and present preliminary conclusions on how to use IE descriptions in various educational contexts.
Celem niniejszego artykułu jest ukazanie miejsca i roli spotkania interkulturowego (SI) w komunikacji oraz edukacji, także w praktyce glottodydaktycznej. W części 1. pracy przedstawiono SI jako zdarzenie komunikacyjne i zdefiniowano je z użyciem pojęć stosowanych przez etnografów mowy (komunikacji). W części 2. omówiono koncepcje zawarte w Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Companion Volume with New Descriptors (CEFR 2018) związane z mediacją tekstu, pojęć i komunikacji oraz zaprezentowano autorską definicję mediacji, odnoszącą się do kontaktów międzykulturowych. Zaakcentowano w niej, że mediacja polega także na prowadzeniu „wywiadu rozumiejącego z samym sobą”, nie tylko na występowaniu w roli pośrednika ułatwiającego przebieg danego epizodu komunikacyjnego. W części 3. omówiono pojęcia teoretyczne odnoszące się do SI, scharakteryzowano je jako narzędzie stosowane w pedagogice i edukacji interkulturowej, a następnie zaprezentowano wybrany opis SI autorstwa studentki specjalizacji Nauczanie Języka Polskiego jako Obcego/Drugiego Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego. W części czwartej przeanalizowano przykładowy opis SI oraz przedstawiono wstępne wnioski na temat sposobów wykorzystania opisów SI w różnorodnych kontekstach edukacyjnych.

In the following article I am going to present the detailed analysis of the concept of motivation in philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer. It will be particularly important for me to present this concept in relation to the problem of identity of two aspects of human subject: cognitive and volitional. Moreover I will show that there are at least several important problems and obscurities connected with Shopenhauer’s standpoint even though his concept of action is unquestionably close to our “natural” and “common sense” beliefs.

In this contribution to Text Matters, I would like to introduce gender into my feminist response to Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutic phenomenology of the capable subject. The aim is to make, phenomenologically speaking, “visible” the gendering of this subject in a hermeneutic problematic: that of a subject’s loss of confidence in her own ability to understand herself. Ricoeurian hermeneutics enables us to elucidate the generally hidden dimensions in a phenomenology of lost self-confidence; Ricoeur describes capability as “originally given” to each lived body; but then, something has happened, gone wrong or been concealed in one’s loss of confidence. Ricoeur himself does not ask how the gender or sex of one’s own body affects this loss. So I draw on contemporary feminist debates about the phenomenology of the body, as well as Julia Kristeva’s hermeneutics of the Antigone figure, in order to demonstrate how women might reconfigure the epistemic limits of human capability, revealing themselves as “a horizon” of the political order, for better or worse.

Contemporary organizations are one of the most important actors in social life. This is particularly true of business organizations whose activity often has extremely moral consequences. The aim of the paper is to present the problem of moral subjectivity and reflection on the possibility of recognizing an organization as a moral subject. The basis for the considerations were three reference points developed in subsequent parts of the article. The first is the category of moral responsibility. The second concerns the approach of moral subjectivity through the process of moral development. The third point is the category of conscience. Each of these points has been described as an attribute of a moral subject. On the basis of the examples, comments and discussions cited, the arguments for and against the attribution of the organization of moral subjectivity were confronted.
