    The purpose of this article is to examine whether the work of Hermogenes can be useful in the analysis of the media. The Polish translation of the Byzantine textbook becomes an opportunity to reflect on the universality of the principles of creating persuasive messages. According to Hermogenes, rhetoric is the practical, civic skill of persuasion on important matters. Today, his ideas can be applied to television news. His textbook teaches us how to analyse the structure of television programmes, how to find – at a verbal and visual level – rhetorical figures.

    The figure of the first Roman emperor in many ways had an impact on the Polish culture, especially in historiography and literature. In my paper I focus on some issues connected with the subject. I discuss the ideas presented by Tadeusz Zieliński, one of the most eminent researchers of the ancient world in Europe in the first part of 20th century. He devoted a significant part of his opus to present his own vision of Augustus seen as a reformer of the Roman state religion. Zieliński built the emperor’s image as the saviour of the Roman world in the face of „the end of times”. This term played significant role in Zieliński’s thinking about Roman history at the end of the Republic. For the Polish scholar celebration of the secular game in 17 BC was the final task done by Augustus. This task Zieliński defined as the sacred mission and connected with the figure of Sibyl and the impact of the Etruscan theory of saeculum. For Zieliński, Augustus belonged to the most important men of providence in Roman history. In the same way I discuss the ideas presented by Ludwik Piotrowicz and Mieczysław St. Popławski. Both scholars analised the question of imperial cult in depth. Popławski expressed original view on Augustus apotheosis seen as the development of imperial cult in transcendental perspective. Piotrowicz instead saw this problem as a purely political phenomenon. Last part of my paper is devoted to short resentation of the echos of Augustus’ bimillenium in Polish scholar activity.

    This text constitutes a response to the polemic reaction on my previous publication regarding the key issue within the Polish scientists’ careers (specialists in the humanities and the social sciences) – evaluation of their academic achievements on grounds of their publications in English in a specific high-ranking English-language journals. This time, I analyze the questions below related to the reliability of Web browsers, the scientific credibility of the Impact Factor, and to the different kinds of bias causing ineffectiveness of the commonly used bibliometric practices within the discussed scientific areas. Moreover, this article discusses the issue concerning publishing Polish scientists’ non-English articles. It also presents a problem of a wide dissemination of Polish knowledge abroad, indicating the validity of ascientific world perception, which is different from the anglocentric one. The text is enriched with a chosen current literature, which complements the presented analysis.

    In the presented polemical article I discuss the paper by Izabela Wagner (Selektywna analiza problemu publikacji humanistów i przedstawicieli nauk społecznych w języku angielskim [Analysis of the problem regarding publishing the scientific articles written in English in humanities and social sciences by scholars originated and educated in non-English speaking countries], „Przegląd Socjologii Jakościowej”, 2012, t. 8, nr 1, s. 166–187). One of the main issues of her polemic was the process of articles’ review in the scientific international journals. On the basis of her single experience with an American journal, Wagner presents a very negative view on this process. However, neither the author of the presented polemic, nor other known to him Polish scientist who have published articles in the international journals in the area of social sciences have encountered problems described by Wagner. In my opinion, such information is very important for the readers of PSJ, since subjective and pejorative presentation of the reviewing process might cause prejudices towards publishing articles in the international journals among the Polish scientists. Additionally, I described in detail the process of assignment of points to the international journals by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education (the knowledge of which might help to avoid important misunderstandings). Moreover, I presented the possible ways of dealing with unethical editor’s behavior described by Wagner and analyzed her advices on publishing strategies and international career.

    The article analyses the issue of publications written in English by a specialists in the humanities and social sciences who are educated and work in non-English speaking regions. Polish scientists constitute the basis for the study. The problem is considered from the perspective of the sociology of careers and reveals that the process of publishing a scientific paper is a complex sociological pro¬cess determined by criteria other than meritocratic ones. The selection process, leading to successful publication in a professional journal, is determined by several factors (not related to scientific skills), such as appurtenance to networks of scientific institutions, disciplinary culture and areas of refe¬rences, as well as the type of knowledge (not related to quality, but rather to scientific background, which the authors refer to). On the basis of ethnographical and auto-ethnographical research it is shown that the common spread approach, which supports the publication of all kinds of studies in English by humanities and social scientists, is the result of a misunderstanding of the sociological component of the scientific publication process. It is also due to a lack of knowledge about the mecha¬nisms governing scientific careers, inherent in regions where local languages are fundamental for studies (which is different to the specialties in sciences, which are developed in a technical language, e.g., in English).

    Opis:
    An important part of the contemporary market of children's books are publications dedicated to science. In the vast majority of the form adapted to the child's age glossaries and encyclopedias, of a general nature, or on a slice of reality as the universe, dinosaurs, animals, plants. Although these are undoubtedly extremely valuable items, it seems that suit the needs of quite specific - and most important numerically limited-type audience: people interested in science and learning, and not necessarily as happy up after literature. Books of Anna Czerwińska-Rydel, an author of numerous fictionalized biographies, including Maria Curie-Skłodowska, Johannes Hevelius or Daniel Fahrenheit shows, however, that you can successfully write texts about science dedicated to a completely different, more "literary" set of the reader. An article is an attempt a presentation of books of the author devoted to famous - as above - and less well known, as Jan Czochralski or Elizabeth Hevelius, scientists and their achievements. In particular, the focus will be on how to present complicated science topics using of the poetics specific to a literary text.
    Publikacje poświęcone nauce stanowią ważną część współczesnego rynku książki dla dzieci. W zdecydowanej większości mają one formę dostosowanych do wieku dziecka leksykonów i miniencyklopedii, zarówno o charakterze ogólnym, jak i poświęconych określonemu wycinkowi rzeczywistości (np. kosmos, dinozaury, zwierzęta, rośliny). Choć są to niewątpliwie pozycje wartościowe, wydaje się, że wychodzą naprzeciw potrzebom specyficznego − i zarazem liczebnie ograniczonego − typu odbiorcy: osób zainteresowanych nauką, niekoniecznie zaś równie chętnie sięgających po literaturę, tzw. „umysłów ścisłych”. Twórczość Anny Czerwińskiej-Rydel, autorki licznych fabularyzowanych biografii (m.in. Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej, Jana Heweliusza czy Daniela Fahrenheita) pokazuje jednak, że można z powodzeniem pisać teksty poświęcone nauce, kierowane do zupełnie inaczej, bardziej „literacko”, nastawionego czytelnika. Artykuł jest próbą prezentacji książek autorki poświęconych znanym (jak wyżej wymienieni) i mniej znanym (np. Jan Czochralski czy Elżbieta Heweliusz) naukowcom oraz ich dokonaniom. W szczególności koncentrować się będzie na sposobach prezentowania skomplikowanych zagadnień z zakresu nauk ścisłych przy pomocy poetyki właściwej dla tekstu literackiego.

    The paper describes the debates which took place during the 4th Annual CEENELS Conference (Moscow, 14–15 June 2019). The aim of the conference was to analyse the issue of legal innovativeness in Central and Eastern Europe, the topic which was chosen as a continuation of previous CEENELS conferences. The organizers wanted to challenge the widespread belief that the legal culture of Central and Eastern Europe lacks original and innovative concepts and ideas. Even if the conference did not bring a definitive answer about the character of Central and Eastern European countries’ legal culture, it showed that the region is not only a territory of legal transplants and reception of legal ideas, concepts and institutions, created in Western Europe or the US.
    Artykuł opisuje dyskusje, które miały miejsce podczas IV Konferencji CEENELS (Moskwa, 14–15 czerwca  2019). Celem konferencji była analiza zagadnienia innowacyjności w zakresie prawa w Europie Środkowo-Wschodniej. Temat ten został wybrany jako kontynuacja poprzednich konferencji CEENELS. Organizatorzy chcieli podważyć powszechne przekonanie, że w kulturze prawnej Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej brakuje oryginalnych oraz nowatorskich koncepcji i pomysłów. Nawet jeśli konferencja nie przyniosła definitywnej odpowiedzi na temat charakteru kultury prawnej krajów Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej, to pokazała, że region ten jest nie tylko terytorium przeszczepów prawnych i recepcji idei, koncepcji i instytucji prawnych, tworzonych w Europie Zachodniej lub USA.

    The article analyzes the scientific heritage of Ukrainian scientists of Eastern Galicia in the 19th century on current issues with the history of South Slavic peoples. Its content, topics and methodology in the context of the development of national Slavonic studies are described. Special studies on the history of Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia and Montenegro are analyzed. The most comprehensive of these studies are the scientific investigations of Denys Zubrytsky: Statement about Montenegro People; and Jakyw Holovatsky: Types of Slavic Peoples. Bulgarians, On the Transdanubian Slavs living on the Balkan Peninsula, Greater Croatia or Galician-Carpathian Rus. The content and problems of these studies give ground to claims that Galician scholars have a weak, sporadic knowledge of these peoples compared to the history of the Western Slavs. In spite of this, the questions raised by the scholars on: the peculiarities of the introduction of Christianity by Cyril and Methodius in Bulgaria; cultural, national, religious policy of the Ottoman Empire towards the Southern Slavs; the liberation movement of Bulgarians, Serbs, Montenegrins in the 19th century, etc.; testify to the scientific interest of scholars of Eastern Galicia in the Southern Slavs. At the same time, the interpretation of their history was of a civilizational nature and reflected the general trends in the development of Ukrainian historical Slavic studies in the 19th century.
    Artykuł analizuje dorobek naukowy ukraińskich badaczy Galicji Wschodniej w XIX w., dotyczący aktualnych problemach dziejów ludów południowosłowiańskich. Omówiono jego treść, problematykę i metodologię w kontekście rozwoju narodowej slawistyki. Mowa tu o specjalistycznych studiach nad historią Bułgarii, Serbii, Chorwacji i Czarnogóry. Najdokładniejsze z tych opracowań to badania naukowe Denysa Zubryckiego Wiadomości o Czarnogórcach i Jakywa Hołowackiego Typy ludów słowiańskich. Bułgarzy, O Słowianach Zadunajskich żyjących na Półwyspie Bałkańskiej oraz Wielka Chorwacja czy Ruś galicyjsko-karpacka. Treść i problemy tych badań dają podstawy do stwierdzenia słabej, epizodycznej wiedzy galicyjskich uczonych o tych ludach, w porównaniu z historią Słowian zachodnich. Mimo to stawiane przez uczonych pytania, dotyczące m.in. osobliwości wprowadzenia chrześcijaństwa przez Cyryla i Metodzego w Bułgarii, kulturalnej, narodowej i religijnej polityki Imperium Osmańskiego wobec południowych Słowian, ruchu wyzwoleńczego Bułgarów, Serbów, Czarnogórców w XIX w., świadczą o zainteresowaniu uczonych Galicji Wschodniej Słowianami południowymi. Jednocześnie interpretacja ich dziejów miała charakter cywilizacyjny i odzwierciedlała ogólne tendencje rozwoju ukraińskiej slawistyki historycznej w XIX w.
