Almanac “Women and Russia,” feminist movement in Soviet Russia
Opis:
This article presents a short history of the origin and creation of the Almanac “Women and Russia,” which began as a samizdat underground publication devoted to the problem of women and childrearing in the USSR. The idea for creating such an Almanac originated in the mid 1970s in the Leningrad circle of ‘unofficial culture’, at the initiative of the artist Tatyana Mamonova, religious philosopher Tatyana Goricheva, and the women author Natasha Malachovska. The women writers featured in the first edition of the Almanac addressed not only questions about the social conditions prevailing in the USSR, but above all exposed the consequences for women living and functioning in a patriarchal social order, and ironically one where all the questions concerning ‘women’s rights’ were deemed to have been resolved in a progressive fashion much earlier. Not only is the substance of the Almanac important, but the circumstances surrounding its publication and the subsequent consequences related to its publishing also reveal the state of the ‘women’s movement’ in the USSR of that time. These include the reactions of the representatives of the dissident culture, the interventions of the security apparatus and the attendant repression of the women activists and its effect on their lives, and the support of feminist organizations from abroad. Each of the afore-mentioned reactions and consequences became an element of and shaped the everyday lives of the activists involved in the creation of the Almanac. The events related in this work confirm the opinion of those researchers who consider that the publication of the Almanac marked the beginning of the resurrection of the feminist movement in Russia.

The article analyses possible interests, attitudes and activities of the major actors in the ‘natural gas supply game’ in Europe after 1990: Russia/Gazprom, alternative suppliers like countries in the Caspian Sea area, the main consumers of gas and transit countries. It stresses that behaviour of the actors depends on the changing international political and economic situation and conditions in individual countries. Special attention is paid to pipeline projects: Nord Stream, South Stream and Nabucco, and reactions to them, such as building a LGN terminal at Świnoujście (Poland), North-South (Baltic-Adriatic) energy corridor and the Polish-Russian gas contract of 2010.

Opis:
The article aims to show the integration processes in Southeast Asia, with regard to the participation of Russia, and to determine the reason why Russia takes part in them. Based on the demonstration of the international process, two theses have been proven: (1) The project of establishing a Greater Eurasia with the participation of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and ASEAN is a grandiose and strategic goal for Russia. The project is supposed to recall the traditional policy conducted by Russia, consisting of it playing the role of a bridge between Asia and Europe drawing China’s attention to this alternative proposal to the Chinese concept of the Belt and Road Initiative. (2) Russia is a player in the geopolitical game in Southeast Asia, even though it is perceived as the closest ally of China. Under the circumstances, where the relations with the EU have been destabilised, it is in the interest of Russia to further the integration and stabilisation of the region with its more active participation. Russia’s more active participation in regional integration is hampered by its low level of economic cooperation with countries in the region and its image: the activities of Russia are still perceived through the prism of the actions and interests of China, its strategic ally both on a regional as well as global scale.

In December 2014, Russia was accused of developing a state-organized doping system in the second decade of the twenty-first century. The scandal resulted in many Russian athletes being banned from competing in the Olympics in Rio in 2016 and the IOC’s suspension of the Russian National Olympic Committee prior to the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. The research presented in this article aims to answer the research question of whether the doping scandal actually affected the international image of Russia. The research was conducted with the use of frame analysis of public discourse. The hypothesis to be tested states that the Russian doping scandal contributed to the intensification of a negative external image of this state.

The aim of the article is to analyze the change of the Russian Federation’s international image in the light of two significant events: the Olympic Winter Games in 2014 in Sochi and the annexation of Crimea. According to the first hypothesis, one of the main aims for hosting the Olympic Games was to improve the international prestige of Russia. Shortly after the Olympics Russia increased its activity in Eastern Ukraine, which resulted in the annexation of the Crimean Peninsula. Therefore the article is also aimed to investigate whether by annexing Crimea Russia squandered the possible positive effects of hosting the Olympics in terms of its international image.

Opis:
The world is living in a state of constant psychological warfare, technological advances and development; in the 21st century Internet governance has become a puzzle for scientists and practitioners. Virtual warfare is an alternative to real warfare, one of the biggest threats to global security. In discussing the issue, we must consider the capabilities of the world’s leading countries, and first of all, identify the threat posed by Russia, which is the core of unpredictable aggression. This state is trying to influence almost the whole world with large-scale cyber-hacking attacks and continuous disinformation and fake news. Today it is difficult to find out where the theoretical war begins and where the practical military aggression ends, so new research, recommendations, scientific papers, and defence strategies are needed. Defensive mechanisms are created for cyber-attacks and this is always followed by more powerful attacks; that is why NATO enacted Article 5 of the Washington Treaty or the principle of “collective defence.” The article discusses Russia’s aggressive policy towards Georgia during and after the Russian-Georgian war in August 2008. The features of the Russian hybrid war and cyber attacks are discussed.

The model of three-sector synergy in a contemporary state rests on cooperation between the first (state) sector, the second (commercial) sector, and the third sector – the civil one, also referred to as the non-commercial sector. The quest for an optimal solution and the establishment of mutual relations is underpinned by the concept of the reorganization of Russian society with regard to its political modernization; this is accompanied by a variant of social agreement that guarantees citizens equality before the law, and the protection of their rights along with simultaneous compliance with the law. What complements the image of Russia’s contemporary reality is the goal of non-governmental, non-commercial organizations – not only to survive but also to develop a modus vivendi in the circumstances of an authoritarian state.

The political and economic reforms in Russia since the beginning of the 1990s have made it possible to build a new economic system. Over more than 25 years, this system has evolved under the influence of, among others, economic and financial crises, which resulted in changes in the role of the state, ownership structure and the specificity of the corporate sector. The main goal of the paper is to identify the key elements and features of the economic system in Russia in the specified stages of its evolution and to indicate the perspectives of changes. To achieve this goal, an in-depth analysis was made of the literature and statistical data. The author puts forward the thesis that there are still some premises of the evolution of the economic system in Russia which resulted from the need for structural changes and the exhaustion of the current model of economic growth. However, in the immediate future, the economic system in Russia will not evolve significantly because of the economic stability and the lack of political will to make significant reforms.

Opis:
The article notes that globalization brings not only the economies of different countries, but also creates certain prerequisites for the formation of global ethics is already indicated by a consensus on a number of key humanitarian values, values which represent a synthesis of East and West. Russia is certainly a European country, which, however, has a considerable territory in Asia, which is a formal obstacle to its eventual entry into the EU. In this regard, it’s necessary to find a form of “privileged partnership” with it, which would provide “a pan-European unity”. Despite the fact that now in Russian society and in the West, dominated by very different sentiments, the confrontation between Russia and Europe end sooner or later. For both sides, cooperation is no alternative.

Opis:
This paper attempts to reconstruct the image of present-day Russia, as presented in the contemporary Russian theatre. Combining isolated fragments of new post-perestroika reality into a cohesive whole: the social status of the intelligentsia, of ordinary people, young people and senior citizens and problems of settling accounts with the Communist past and the Chechen war, which have been scattered throughout individual dramatic works, makes it possible to show the author’s appraisal of the social changes. These are expressed through the employment of such metaphorical words and phrases as ‘madhouse / loony bin’, [a right] ‘farce’, [totally] ‘chaotic’, ‘new broom sweeps clean’ etc. The object of scientific reflection is also the ways of artistic realization of the image of Russia. The various means of artistic expression employed in the ‘new drama’: modifications of genre and time-space modifications, historical figures and simulacra, various stylistic means, like irony and grotesque, rhetorical figures, notional metaphors; and finally, inter-textual quotations and references taken from a vast store of pop culture and the language of mass media impart a collage-like atmosphere to the image, which allude through its aesthetics to the theatre of absurd.

The category of a national interest is one of the most popular notions used in international relations. It has a polysemic character and is differently interpreted by various scientific perspectives. The purpose of this article is to provide a brief analysis of selected approaches of the theory of international relations to defining interests and correlating the interpretations of national interests of the Russian Federation performed on their bases. The choice of case study concerning the foreign policy of the Russian Federation is not accidental because in countries aspiring to gain world power the concept of national interest is raised while explaining the motives of decisions taken by their leaders exceptionally often. In this article, Russia’s interests will be discussed in reference to the annexation of the Crimea and Russia’s actions towards Ukraine. Those events vividly show the specificity of defining the national interests, based on one hand on the pursue to being a powerhouse and understanding the interests in the category of power and, on the other hand, resulting from the political identity of Russian elites. As a result, an assessment of the scientific utility of selected theoretical paradigms and their use in the analyses of Russia’s foreign policy will be outlined.

Opis:
Na początku drugiej dekady XIX w. na terenie Rosji pojawiła się instytucja naczelnika okręgu celnego. Pełnił on funkcje nadzorcze w stosunku do urzędów celnych działających na granicy monarchii Romanowów. Ponadto sam proces kształtowania się zakresu praw i obowiązków naczelnika okręgu celnego miał miejsce w drugiej, trzeciej i czwartej dekadzie XIX stulecia.
In the early 1820s the customs district chief was instituted in Russia. This official was in charge of all the customs offices operating on the borders of the Romanov Empire. Moreover, the customs district chief supervised other structures on behalf of the Foreign Trade Department of the Ministry of Finance (FTDMF). The conducted analysis of handwritten and printed sources justifies the conclusion that the position of customs district chief was instituted as a result of gradual modernisation of the customs administration at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Moreover, the very process of shaping rights and duties of the customs district chief took place in the second, third and fourth decades of the 19th century. Such an operative model of the clerk supervising the functioning of the customs administration and border guards became permanently established in the structures of the Russian customs administration. Furthermore, in 1851, as a result of the liquidation of the customs autonomy of the Kingdom of Poland, the position of the customs district chief appeared in those peripheral territories of the Russian Empire.

In this article, based on the statistical data analysis, we consider the labour market in the contemporary Russia in face of global economic crises. In our opinion, two kinds of programs should be in Russia interest:• coordination of unemployment benefits with vocational training, retraining or additional education;• using the compelled holidays for additional education and retraining. The target programs directed on strengthening employees' positions with a high educational level on the labour market are extremely necessary in the Russian conditions. In order to decide on specific problems special departments should be created in the Ministry of Work and Social Development of the Russian Federation.
