Przedmiotem zainteresowania w artykule jest ojcostwo realizowane przez emigrantów. Tekst jest próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie: W jaki sposób sytuacja emigracji wpływa na sposób bycia ojcem? W pierwszej części zaprezentowano analizy wyników badań innych badaczy w odniesieniu do literatury przedmiotu. Przedstawiono sposoby definiowania ojcostwa, socjologiczną koncepcję roli ojca, w tym roli nowego ojca. Analizie poddano także problematykę kryzysu ojcostwa, jego przyczyn i skutków. Druga część stanowi sprawozdanie z badań własnych. Badania realizowano strategią jakościową w dwóch grupach badanych: wśród rodzin emigracyjnych i rodzin bez doświadczeń z emigracją. Zaprezentowano w niej opis doświadczeń ojców-emigrantów i pełnienia przez nich roli rodzicielskiej na odległość, a także porównanie strategii wychowawczych ojców emigrujących i nieemigrujących. Przedmiotem opisu uczyniono także warunki i możliwości bycia transnarodowym ojcem.

Text concerns the post-war history of these two countries under the protectorate of USRR, the changing social reception of communism, their fight for democracy and respectable life. The text focuses on Polish post-war history, especially the facts having influenced the Round Table negotiations and beginning of transition processes. Detailed analysis tries to explain the difference between Polish and Hungarian ways to democracy, especially why Hungarians experienced tragic revolution and Soviet armed intervention whereas Polish protests were more peaceful. Also social consequences of 1956 year varied in both countries: the Polish regularly protested against the communist party, whereas Hungarians chose the compromise. However, finally in 1989 both Poland and Hungary became leaders of transition process in Central-Eastern Europe.

Despite major advances in research on language learning strategies, there are still areas that have received only scant attention, and one of them is undoubtedly learning grammar. The paper contributes to the paucity of empirical investigations in this domain by presenting the findings of a study which sought to investigate the relationship between the use of grammar learning strategies (GLS) reported by 142 English Department students and target language attainment, operationalized as their performance in a practical grammar course and the end-of-the-year examination. Information about GLS use was obtained by means of a tool that was designed on the basis of a theoretical scheme proposed by Oxford, Rang Lee and Park (2007) in which GLS are divided into three categories depending on whether they represent implicit learning with focus on form, explicit inductive learning and explicit deductive learning. The analysis failed to find a strong positive relationship between the use of GLS and achievement, irrespective of the level of the BA program, or statistically significant differences in this respect between lower-level and higher-level participants. The highest, albeit very weak, correlation was identified between the use of GLS associated with explicit deductive learning and grammar course grades, which testifies to the traditional nature of instruction the subjects receive. The findings serve as a basis for putting forward a handful of recommendations for learning, teaching and testing grammar as well as directions for future studies into grammar learning strategies.

The complex issue of death is difficult subject of analysis, both in individual and social perspective. Death and dying are, however, frequent focus of scientific and medial discourse. common consciousness death is still an arousing embarrassment taboo, so focusing on Social perception of death is current and well founded. Till the beginnings of 20-th century two main forms of death perception had prevailed: perception based on sensation of sight and perception through the sensation of smell. During 20-th century death experienced the process of medicalisation. Illness, ageing and death were replaced by power, youth and success. Further important consequences of medicalisation process follow: ambiguity of death, development of particular hospital ideology and appearance of ‘limited conscience’, leading to keeping dying patients in the ignorance of coming death. Nowadays the concept of patients’ subjectivity and their right to proper death is popularised.

Although all the Western Balkan countries have been offered the prospect of European Union (EU) membership, the accession process still constitutes a complicated and multi-aspect challenge. EU support and engagement in the region have resulted in a few successes, nonetheless, describing them as major breakthroughs is far from the reality. Since the establishment of the Dayton Agreement in 1995, ending the conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina, most of the Balkan states have not managed to accomplish their political, ideological and civic transformations yet. However, the difficult situation and frequent negotiation stalemates are not only the outcomes of the unsatisfactory progress made by the Peninsular countries. Ambiguous and unethical (in some cases) behaviour can also be noticed from the EU decision-makers’ side. The following article aims to present concrete examples of EU external policy actions in Bosnia and Herzegovina which can be described as controversial. However, the author attempts to prove the thesis that unethical external policy is not always a zero-sum game, and in particular circumstances it can be paradoxically perceived as the best solution. Taking into consideration the comprehensiveness of the problem and editorial limitations, the analysis focuses on activities of the High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, who used to be (during four out of seven tenures) the EU Special Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The technological, economic and political advances of the 20th and 21st centuries have established new conditions for the development of civilization. The world economy has simultaneously expanded (the number of states/organization participating in world trade or the volume of heterogeneous transactions) and shrunk (close interrelations between transactions, no matter their geographic origins). Economic policy has gained an indispensable role in the creation of order in international relations and foreign policy. The tendency to prioritize foreign policy aims towards economic policy aims has resulted in ‘reverse flow’, i.e. foreign policy has become a central part of national economic policy. The engagement of external action services and public budget in economic promotion and investments triggers (inter alia) the ethics dilemma. The mentioned ethical aspect is often omitted when discussing ‘the economic foreign policy’. For instance, the ethics dilemma can appear when development and humanitarian aid are taken into account or when it comes to assessing the results (and membership) of economic missions. In this context, the author analyses the Polish foreign policy example and attempts to answer two questions. First, are the economic activities performed by external action services effective? Second, are the mentioned activities in accordance with the social ethical code of conduct? The author focuses on three elements – development and humanitarian aid, the participation of Polish diplomats in economic promotion, and economic missions.

Bezdomność jest tego rodzaju kryzysem w życiu człowieka, który bardzo silnie wpływa na działania jednostki we wszystkich wymiarach zdrowia, na jej codzienne wybory i hierarchię potrzeb. Walka o przetrwanie i konieczność zaspokojenia podstawowych potrzeb wyklucza koncentrowanie się na własnym zdrowiu i dbanie o jego dobry stan, a wręcz nierzadko sprzyja jego pogorszeniu. Problem stanu zdrowia osób bezdomnych i przyjęty przez nie styl życia najdobitniej pokazuje, że promocja zdrowia nie może ograniczyć się tylko do chwytliwych medialnych haseł czy prostych wskazówek, jak zdrowo żyć. Wymaga uwzględnienia szeregu różnych zmiennych, a nade wszystko całego kontekstu społecznego. Celem przygotowanego artykułu jest próba odpowiedzi na pytanie o możliwość i skuteczność działań z zakresu promocji zdrowia wśród grup wykluczonych na przykładzie osób w kryzysie bezdomności. Na podstawie badań własnych prowadzonych wśród podopiecznych schronisk dla bezdomnych w Łodzi (wywiady swobodne z ustrukturalizowaną listą pytań) i pracowników tychże placówek (wywiady swobodne pogłębione) autor stara się odpowiedzieć na pytanie, jaki jest stan wiedzy bezdomnych na temat prozdrowotnego stylu życia, jakie zachowania związane ze zdrowiem są charakterystyczne dla tej grupy, ale nade wszystko jakie czynniki wpływają na styl życia, w tym wybory zdrowotne, i kształtują stan zdrowia osób zepchniętych na margines społeczny.
Homelessness is the kind of crisis in a person’s life that has a very strong impact on the individual’s actions in all dimensions of health, on his daily choices and on the hierarchy of needs. The struggle for survival and the need to meet basic needs excludes focusing on one’s own health and taking care of its good condition, and even often promotes its deterioration. The problem of the health of homeless people and the lifestyle they have adopted most clearly shows that health promotion must not be limited to catchy media slogans or simple tips on how to live a healthy life. It requires taking into account a number of different variables and, above all, the whole social context. The aim of the prepared article is to try to answer the question of the possibility and effectiveness of health promotion activities among excluded groups, for example among homeless people. On the basis of his own research conducted among homeless people in the shelters in city of Łódź and among employees of these institutions, the author tries to answer the question of what is the state of knowledge of homeless people about the health-promoting lifestyle, what health-related behaviors are characteristic for this group, but above all what factors influence lifestyle, including health choices, and shape the health of marginalized people.

Pragmatic competence in L2 English is claimed here to be crucial for successful communication in a variety of communicative contexts across Europe. However, due to language background, cultural and identity differences among users of English, there is a need for reflection and data-driven examination of how the language is used in specific situations. This paper adopts a cross-cultural perspective on the study of the use of English in the European Union with focus on its role in tourism. The role of English as the language of communication in Europe is discussed, followed by a proposal as to the way in which its actual usage can be studied. The data-driven approach to pragmatic behavior is advocated as the basis for the development of pragmatic competence in learners of English with focus on those who wish to engage in tourism.

Despite the fact that the last few years have witnessed a growth of interest in pronunciation learning strategies (PLS) (e.g. Petersen 2000; Pawlak 2008a; Wrembel 2008), this line of inquiry still remains neglected and is in urgent need of further empirical investigation. This is because the available research findings are primarily confined to the identification and description of the strategic devices that learners draw upon in their attempts to learn the various segmental and suprasegmental features, with only a handful of studies addressing such issues as the factors influencing PLS choice and use, the impact of proficiency levels or the value of strategies-based instruction in this area. Another problem is related to the use of diverging research methodologies and data collection tools, which renders it impossible to make comparisons between various studies, view their results in a cumulative way and arrive at conclusions concerning the effectiveness of specific strategies used by learners.What appears to be indispensable to drive the field forward and ensure that research findings will be comparable across studies and provide a sound basis for feasible pedagogic proposals is to draw up a classification of PLS and design on that basis a valid and reliable data collection tool which could be employed to measure the use of these strategies in different groups of learners, correlate it with individual and contextual variables, and appraise the effects of training programs. In accordance with this rationale, the present paper represents an attempt to propose a tentative categorization of pronunciation learning strategies, adopting as a point of reference the existing taxonomies of strategic devices (i.e. O'Malley and Chamot 1990; Oxford 1990) and the instructional options teachers have at their disposal when dealing with elements of this language subsystem (e.g. Kelly 2000; Goodwin 2001). It also introduces a research instrument designed on the basis of the classification that shares a number of characteristics with Oxford's (1990) Strategy Inventory for Language Learning but, in contrast to it, includes both Likert-scale and open-ended items. The findings of a pilot study which involved 80 English Department students demonstrate that although the tool requires considerable refinement, it provides a useful point of departure for future research into PLS.

A person’s willingness to communicate (WTC), believed to stem from a combination of proximal and distal variables comprising psychological, linguistic, educational and communicative dimensions of language, appears to be a significant predictor of success in language learning. The ability to communicate is both a means and end of language education, since, on the one hand, being able to express the intended meanings in the target language is generally perceived as the main purpose of any language course and, on the other, linguistic development proceeds in the course of language use. However, MacIntyre (2007, p. 564) observes that some learners, despite extensive study, may never become successful L2 speakers. The inability or unwillingness to sustain contacts with more competent language users may influence the way learners are evaluated in various social contexts. Establishing social networks as a result of frequent communication with target language users is believed to foster linguistic development. WTC, initially considered a stable personality trait and then a result of context-dependent influences, has recently been viewed as a dynamic phenomenon changing its intensity within one communicative event (MacIntyre and Legatto, 2011; MacIntyre et al., 2011). The study whose results are reported here attempts to tap into factors that shape one’s willingness to speak during a communicative task. The measures employed to collect the data - selfratings and surveys - allow looking at the issue from a number of perspectives.

Titus Flavius Clemens was a philosopher and Christian theologian from the period of the 2nd–3th century. The aim of this paper is to present his view on the subject of wine and his recommendations on wine consumption as described in his work entitled Paedagogus. In this work Titus Flavius Clemens focuses primarily on the moral side of drinking wine. He is a great supporter of the ancient principle of moderation, or the golden mean (μεσότης). We also find its traces in his recommendations regarding the drinking of wine. First of all, he does not require Christians to be abstinent. Although he considers water as the best natural beverage to satisfy thirst, he does not make them reject God’s wine. The only condition he sets, however, is to maintain moderation in drinking it. He recommends diluting wine with water, as the peaceful Greeks always did, unlike the war-loving barbarians who were more prone to drunkenness. On the other hand, Titus Flavius Clemens warns the reader against excessive dilution of wine, so that it does not turn out to be pure water. He severely criticizes drunkenness, picturesquely presenting the behavior of drunks, both men and women. Wine in moderation has, in his opinion, its advantages – social, familial and individual. It makes a person better disposed to himself or herself, kinder to friends and more gentle to family members. Wine, when consumed in moderation, may also have medicinal properties. Clemens is well aware of this fact and in his work he cites several medical opinions on the subject. Unfortunately, in Paedagogus we find little information about wine as a food product / as an everyday bevarage. The input on the subject is limited to the list of exclusive, imported wines. What is worth noting, Titus Flavius Clemens appears to be a sommelier in this way.
