Opis:
The purpose of this theoretical research is to open a scholarly discussion on the topic of journalism education studies terminology. The research is based upon the paradigm of sustainable journalism education and innovation, an important tool for the development of journalism education as an independent scientific discipline. It is applied to identify not yet detected or resolved problems regarding the nature and practice of the discipline which hinder its stronger progress. This article brings a synthesis of a critically analysed discipline’s body of knowledge and highlights key shortcomings of that particular field of study, pointing out the urgent additional work that needs to be done – in terminology. The lack of terminological support, particularly in the context of the reference literature, turned out to be one of the key impediments. It could be, for instance, remedied by creating a glossary. However, due to the discipline’s three-dimensionality (journalism, education, journalism education), this project will not be an easy endeavour, which is why the respective challenges are discussed in this paper starting from the epistemological need to internationally publish the rare attempts of unambiguously defining the fundamental terms of the discipline. Furthermore, the author proposes the central term of a future glossary, “journalism education”, as the first entry, and therefore provides the initial review of its definitions. Due to the fact that the proposed glossary would be the first attempt to create an official terminology and given the dynamic environment in which journalism education studies and related professions are manifested, a flexible approach to the reference book’s keeping up with the times is recommended.

Digital media and accompanying forms of communication also affect risks and opportunities regarding media-related competencies. Since a broad basis of knowledge is required to understand the increasingly complex contexts in both mediatized and interpersonal communication, media literacy and media education must be considered crucial to meet these current challenges. However, media education is noticeably limited to digital skills aimed at preparing citizens primarily for the world of work. Understanding media literacy in this way means degrading the acquirement of competencies for democratic participation and debate to a mere nice-to-have. This paper aims to critically discuss the ongoing move of media literacy education and programs toward acquiring digital skills primarily. Therefore, we assessed Austrian governmental decrees and curricula in terms of their focus on both the promotion of citizens’ employability and media education concerning democratic participation and deliberative communication. In addition, we conducted interviews with two leading Austrian experts in media education to gain insights from different perspectives.

One of the issues that has been argued for many years is what the ratio of theoretical and practical classes should be in the curriculum of Communication Faculties in Turkey. Academic traditions, that communication faculties have, determine the content and the quality of communication education. In this context, disagreement arose between communication faculties and the media sector about whether the education is given to students should be theoretical or practical. This study aims to examine the historical development process of the State and Foundation communication faculties that have been increasing in number in Turkey since the 1990s. It also aims to reveal the problems that are experienced in communication education and the arguments about whether education should be theoretical or practical. These aims have been addressed by scanning the literature. The study has examined the lessons at communication faculties in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir, which rank high in terms of socio-economic levels. The content analysis method was applied during the practical classes.

The present study exemplifies the role digital media used to play in 2019-2020 in the Russian language classroom at secondary schools in Austria, Germany and South Tyrol (Italy) before the COVID-19-pandemic hit, whereby on which also current digitisation efforts are focused. The empirical baseline study aims at investigating the types of digital media and how frequently these are employed as well as the specific purposes they are used for in the Russian language classroom. Aside from addressing the positive effects that arise from working with digital media in classroom settings, also challenges that Russian language teachers face when implementing digital technologies are discussed. The data were collected in a mixed-methods procedure: quantitative data from online-questionnaires and qualitative data from face-to-face semistructured interviews. The data represent the teachers’ perspective on the one hand and that of the pupils on the other. The data from the online surveys were analysed with descriptive and inferential statistics, those from the interviews with qualitative content analysis whereby also individual case studies were conducted. This paper presents major study results and closes with implications for teacher training programmes as well as for future research.

Student radio stations are an important part of the media environment in Slovakia. Our research focused on obtaining information on the functioning of these stations, including their legal regulation, training of new members and formal integration into university structures. Student radio stations have several rights and obligations secured by the new Slovak Media Act and can be classified as community radio stations. Students are mostly mentored and apprenticed by senior radio colleagues for a semester or a whole year to hone their communication skills, create scripts and master broadcasting techniques. Student radio stations are under the umbrella of, or are part of, a university, but focus on student topics in content and do not serve as a medium for a given educational institution. The topic for discussion remains whether the student radio stations are fulfilling their legal obligations and whether they are interested in applying for a radio broadcasting licence. The qualitative research carried out in this study shows that the majority of radio stations in Slovakia have advertisements on air, mostly in the form of barter, and the principles regarding commercial media communication are not always followed. A big question mark is the possibility of obtaining a radio broadcasting licence, as the current legislation may be too restrictive for student radio stations. Overall, the research has shown that student radio stations are an important part of the media environment and can provide students with valuable experience and knowledge in media work.

With the objectives of the Grünwald Declaration (1983), the Alexandria Proclamation (2006), the UNESCO Paris Agenda (2007) and the concept of media literacy (alias understanding and using mass media in either an assertive or non-assertive way, including an informed and critical understanding of media, the techniques they employ and their effects) on mind, it goes without saying that any communication takes place in a certain context (set of facts and circumstances surrounding a media text for the purpose of its interpretation as defined by Wilson et al., 2011, p. 182). Having media literacy on mind, “know-where” to search for information and “knowwhether” such researched information identifies facts imply in our understanding media and literacy, respectively. Then, know-why corresponds with our perception of the context (Wilson, 2011), and know better conveys “to know or understand the truth about something” (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). The perspective of Haider & Sundin (2022) is the one that the purpose of information literacy is to support people’s knowledge, competencies and resources for their proficient engagement with information (incl. finding, evaluating, producing, and communicating situated information in contextappropriate ways). On the one hand, literacy is a conceptual entity in the context of educational sciences; on the other hand, information literacy (just like media literacy) merely specifies media or information, data, digital, or artificial intelligence (AI) as an entity for literacy to latch onto. In the global survey – addressed to UNESCO networks of Associated Schools and university Chairs in May 2023 slightly over one-tenth of 450 institutions (of which 44% were from Europe) confirmed that they have developed institutional policies and/or formal guidance concerning the use of generative AI applications. Curriculum delivery at higher education institutions adheres to Bloom’s taxonomy (Bloom, 1956), which can be applied in two alternative modes: the traditional approach or the flipped approach, in a variety of cultural backgrounds. The aim of our paper is to map the awareness of media (and information) literacy among higher education students at the University of Economics in Bratislava with instruction either in the Slovak language or in the English language. Findings reveal gaps in recognition of sponsored content just like relatively low awareness of generally respected fact-checking online sites with remarkable discrepancies between the cohort studying in the Slovak language and the cohort studying in the English language.

Opis:
New media technologies have become important devices that are changing activities in diverse human endeavours. The advent of the Internet has come with many digital technologies, platforms and networks. There is a plethora of new media such as social networking, gaming, blogging, picture sharing, iPhones, iPods, Tik-Tok, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, ResearchGate, and Academia, among others, which have become common vernacular across the world. Given the rapid spread of new media, education on the use of these technologies and platforms has become necessary. Key among institutions that could promote new media literacy and the use of these applications and platforms are higher education institutions, especially public universities that provide training in communication and media studies to students. While there has been several studies on new media literacy in the Western context, relatively little has been done on how higher education institutions in Africa especially Ghana have promoted digital media literacy among students. This study addresses this gap by exploring how two communication and media education institutions in Ghana promote new media literacy among students. The study is hinged on the new media literacy framework to discuss how knowledge, skills and attitudes toward new media can encourage students to access, understand and create digital communication using technologies and applications in academic and other activities. Using a qualitative research approach and case study design, this study conducts interviews with lecturers in communication and media studies for data to analyse how the University of Education, Winneba and the Ghana Institute of Journalism are using, teaching and implementing new media literacy programmes in the education and learning of students. The study found that students in the two selected communication and media education institutions are not adequately exposed to course contents that are specifically related to new media literacy and usage among students, even though some courses are related generally to ICT, which are run by the public universities with the aim of promoting new media literacy. It is important for new media literacy instructions to be embedded in the courses that are provided in communication and media education in public universities in Ghana.

In today’s interconnected world, implementing media and information literacy (MIL) into school education is essential to equip students with the critical skills needed to navigate an increasingly complex information landscape and discern between credible sources and misinformation. By fostering a generation of media-literate individuals, students can be empowered to become responsible consumers, creators, and contributors in the digital age, thus safeguarding democratic principles and promoting informed civic engagement. This research paper delves into the critical challenges surrounding the implementation of MIL in school education across Central Asian countries, with a specific focus on Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. Through a comprehensive examination, the study addresses key issues such as the perceptions of MIL trainers and experts regarding its significance, exemplary approaches for integration into school education, assessment methods of MIL education programs, differences between Central Asian and global MIL programs, the impact of MIL deficiency on the educational system, and the potential consequences of neglecting its implementation. Drawing on in-depth interviews, existing literature, and comparative analyses, the paper sheds light on the complexities and implications of MIL implementation within the unique context of Central Asia.

The research aimed to examine the effect of the media literacy family education program on the media literacy levels of 48-60-month-old children and their mothers. The research was conducted as distance education with 48-60-month-old children and their mothers attending independent kindergartens affiliated with the Çankırı Provincial Directorate of National Education during the 2019-2020 academic period. In this context, 18 mothers and children formed the experimental group and 22 mothers and children formed the control group. The quantitative part of the study, which was carried out with a convergent parallel mixed method model, consisted of a 2 x 3 mixed plot semi-experimental design with experimental and control groups consisting of pretest-post-test-permanence-test, and the qualitative part consisted of interviews with mothers after the program. In the study, the “General information form”, “Media literacy scale parent form”, “Media literacy scale child form” and “Semi-structured interview form” developed by the researchers were used as data collection tools, and the “Media literacy family education program” was prepared within the scope of the study. As a result of the research, a significant difference was found in the post-test scores of mothers and children in the experimental and control groups in favor of the experimental group. No significant difference was found in the comprehension dimension in the post-test-permanence-test scores of the mothers in the experimental group. In the interview held after the program, the mothers stated that there was a change in themselves and their children after the program, and that they found the training program effective. Based on the results obtained from the research, it can be recommended that parents act consciously about media and implement a media literacy family education program.

The gaming sector is currently, with about 3 billion gamers worldwide, one of the best developing segments in society, not negatively affected even by the COVID-19 pandemic. As the interest in working in this sector increases, so does the interest in higher education in this field. Although the first steps in establishing game studies on the academic grounds date back to the 1980s, this study field institutionalization beginnings can be talked about since 2000 with occurring the ludology definition and the emergence of the first game-oriented scientific journals. Despite the difficult start, in the present, studying digital games is not so limited, partial as well as full degree study programs appear at universities all around the world, but high school graduates are often not aware of these options, even in their nearest surroundings. The study aims to identify the level of awareness of the possibilities within higher education in the field of digital game studies and to determine the attitudes of potential future university students to this field of education in Slovakia that in recent years has significantly eliminated the gap between the level of the Slovak and the Western (or world) gaming sector after the fall of the Iron Curtain. In the study, the authors respond to the three main problems via research completed with a representative sample of respondents. Data show that the level of awareness about these study options if is insufficient, but not lower than the awareness about other study programs. The discovered attitudes are of little consistence and their valency tends from neutral to slightly negative. However, statistics show that respondents perceive the study program of digital gaming as potentially pleasant and at the same time, there is a significant correlation between playing digital games and displaying positive attitudes towards potential studying of the field in the target group.

Media plays a key role in the learning process. Many listeners, viewers, readers, or visitors of online platforms look to the media as a source of new information to expand their knowledge. With a constantly changing lifestyle that keeps accelerating and putting ever higher demands on people to do several things at once, new media are gaining popularity. One of them is a podcast, which reflects the modern person’s need to do more things at once – that is, to gain new knowledge or to be educated in addition to other activities. The ambition of this study is to focus on podcasts in terms of education and on what this form of media offers to its listeners. In more detail, we want to focus on two specific categories of podcasts – official media and official educational institutions. The main goal of this study is to map and point out how the media and official educational institutions, selected by us, use podcasts for education, what forms they prefer, what the frequency of presented materials is and how they process educational content. We will also focus on evaluating whether and in what form podcasts are offered to users.

In the era of the modernization of professional and educational services due to the COVID-19 pandemic innovation processes have been activated. An important condition for high school graduate students is to have new competences in media literacy as part of the educational vision for modern Ukrainian society. New approaches and requirements for professional education determine fundamental changes in the methodology, organization of the education process, subjects, content and instruments helping students in practice and everyday activities. Vectors of educational cooperation with students are more reflected in virtual communications using information and communication technologies (ICT) as modern progressive digital media literacy and educational practices are adapted for young people. In our article, the results of the experimental investigation in using virtual info media practices in the organization of education of students in Journalism and Social Communications field is presented. The aim of the research is to demonstrate how applied experience of using school lessons with connected virtual communicative practices such as info media quests, virtual workshops and media bridges affect media literacy education. We underline the educational advantages of innovative technologies in studying media literacy in Ukrainian high schools and improving the digital communication and critical thinking competencies of young people. The results of the present investigation show that virtual info media practices in high school have made significant progress and have huge advantages over the traditional methods of education in the context of the realization of individual oriented approaches in media literacy education for young people. The opinion poll of the students studying Journalism and Social Communications at Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University with the approbation of appointed virtual communications forms demonstrates this upgrading of their media literacy levels and professional capabilities.

In 2020 and 2021, modern society faced a historically unprecedented situation in the field of education. Education systems worldwide underwent a massive transformation from conventional forms of face-to-face learning to distance learning alternatives. This forced transformation of teaching, triggered by the global COVID-19 pandemic, has been a major test of resilience and adaptability for universities and other academic institutions. This emergency situation, and the way it was handled, was the subject of empirical study by the University of Finance and Administration in the form of a questionnaire-based survey focused concurrently on students and academics during the 2020/2021 academic year, during what has been referred to as the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. We observed the attitudes of students and academics, then broke these down to greater levels of detail through mutual confrontation in the areas of evaluating the quality of online education, the decreasing or increasing levels of interest in courses, the level of communication skills of educators, or their availability during online office hours. We also explored the key question of the role and significance of the absence of physical interactions that characterizes distance learning. The empirical data point to ambivalence in the perceptions of online learning in both populations studied. While, on the one hand, there are clear collective expressions of confidence in the communication skills of educators, partly in the overall quality of the online instruction they provide and partly in their willingness to continue to enhance it in subsequent semesters, on the other hand, the expectations of students were not fully met in certain subjects, which was marked by a palpable decline in interest. One criterion that was critical for the emotional acceptance of online learning is the absence of physical interaction and presence in the school environment. It would therefore appear that the ideal model for future education is a combination of full-time and distance learning that would combine their respective benefits, while eliminating their perceived shortcomings.

Opis:
Infiltration of mass media has increased the exigency of tools necessary for countering the hazardous effects of mass media. Media literacy is considered a tool essential in the 21st century for a democratic society that aims to empower the audience and provides autonomy over mass media messages. Media education plays a significant role in educating media students about theoretical and practical knowledge about media industries. The researcher has employed the “Cognitive Model of Media Literacy” proposed by Potter (2004) and seven skills of media literacy suggested by Potter (2019), particularly as related to news content. News media is supposed to be highly objective, but highlighting some news while neglecting others raises questions about the objectivity of news media. The study intends to explore the standard of media education in Pakistan in imparting news media literacy among media students enrolled in BS and Master’s degree programs. To analyze the level of theoretical and practical knowledge of media students regarding news media and their level of news literacy skills, the researcher has collected data using a cross-sectional survey of 300 students (N=300) enrolled in two public and two private universities in Pakistan, including 200 media students and 100 non-media students. Moreover, through content analysis of the curriculum of media studies mentioned in the prospectus of BS and Master’s degree programs, the standard of media education in Pakistan is also assessed. The study’s findings suggest that media students are more news media literate than non-media students, highlighting the significance of media education. Similarly, consciously and excessively consuming news media also positively affects the level of news media literacy in media students. Moreover, this study suggests that while performing information processing tasks, media students are equipped with skills to perform the task of news filtering comparatively better than meaning construction tasks. However, content analysis of the curriculum reveals that the majority of the courses related to news content focus on theoretical and practical knowledge while neglecting the significance of incorporating analytical courses crucial to harness critical thinking skills. The findings elucidate that universities offering analytical courses in their BS and Master levels scored higher in their news media literacy than those not offering analytical courses. Therefore, the study suggests the incorporation of analytical courses at BS and Master level media education curricula to develop essential skills for performing meaning construction tasks effectively.

The work is based on the philosophy of education according to Vuk-Pavlović and the semiotics of the media according to Barthes’ theory. The aspect of media pedagogy towards digital media is discussed, especially the context of adventures and interactive drama. It answers the question of what the hidden meanings of digital games are. The author starts from the hypothesis that digital games users receive media messages on a semiotic level, and by deconstructing symbols, educational values and media meanings are revealed. The context of media literacy was observed from the aspect of understanding the symbols of digital games in accordance with media competencies. Since digital games reflect social reality, at least in the context of messages, attitudes and values, media competences represent the ability to understand and compare cultural and media literacy. In this sense, digital games have a specific aesthetic, ideological, pedagogical, and symbolic impact on users, which results from the critical thinking of society. Kellner’s theory of media culture will help us to understand the reasons why certain content, symbols and myths become popular and to raise awareness of the social environment of media culture from which digital games emerge. The research results of this study confirm that the observed digital games have educational values and that media meanings are deconstructed through semiotic analysis. This is especially true of the archetypal roles of parents and guardians.
