Opis:
The article constitutes the attempt to formulate remarks and hypotheses referring to the mentality of the elite of Toruń’s burghers in the 17th and the first half of the 18th century, mainly on the basis of the research concerning the history of the culture of Toruń in this period. Toruń’s elite consisted of the few rich members of the proud patriciate and the group of the so called “Scholars” (Gelehrte) – people of various backgrounds, who, having acquired the university education, made a political career in the town and representatives of professions requiring a much better education” priests, teachers, doctors, pharmacists, lawyers and officials of the city authorities. The factors which united all those people in one group was the Protestant religious community (Lutherans), family, social and economic connections. The mentality of Toruń’s inhabitants was affected greatly by the life in a big city where goods were exchanged and people travelled from the north to the south and the east, and from the west to the north and east. Toruń was traditionally connected with Gdańsk and the Baltic Sea, Germany, the Netherlands, England and the Scandinavian countries. The mentality of the patriciate and burghers was imbued with religiousness in the Lutheran or Calvinist sense. The Protestant model of personal life filled with science and work prevailed. At the same time the mentality of Toruń’s burghers, in the first place those who spoke Polish and had direct contacts with noblemen and Catholics, was affected by the Baroque-Sarmatian models promoting the joy of life, the pursuit of luxury and presenting oneself from the best side. A case in point is Jakub Kazimierz Rubinkowski (1668–1749) – a nobleman and burgher of Toruń. This postmaster and burgrave of Toruń combined the features typical of the mentality of the noblemen and burghers. Toruń’s patriciate adopted many customs from noblemen and magnates, which was reflected in fashion, ceremonies, funerals, weddings, etc. Like noblemen, patricians purchased land, set up small “folwarks” and erected summer mansions in the countryside. Inhabitants of Toruń were mentally connected with inhabitants of Gdańsk. Yet, the mentality of Gdańsk’s inhabitants was mainly affected by the fact of living in a harbor open to the sea. Toruń was more closely connected with the Polish-Sarmatian background. What should be underlined is the ability to adapt and co-exist of various groups along with the ability to create a coherent whole. Toruń’s burghers were capable of reconciliating the material (the sphere of business and economy) with the spiritual (the sphere of belief and existential fear).

The author presents the circumstances preceding the dissolution of the Town Council of Toruń in 1929. The formal reason for this restrictive decision was mismanagement and a lack of transparency in the council’s decisions on financial matters. However, there were some political conflicts between the government administration represented by the authorities of the voivodeship and the National Democracy [Endecja] which governed Toruń. The author indicates sources concerning the scrutiny of the municipal authorities conducted in the second half of the 1920s; she also addresses legal issues connected with the functioning and dissolving of the Town Council; she also reveals the echoes of the decisions in the local press.

Opis:
The article addresses the original function of the matroneum in the former Franciscan Church of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mary in Torun. These remarks are the result of the latest discoveries and technological research. The matroneum, situated above the cloister in the northern nave of the church, was built during the reconstruction of the church to its present form. Based on a dendrochronological examination, the matroneum was secured with a wooden railing in the 1350s and later. Due to a lack of written sources, the functions of the matroneum are not determined in scholarly publications. It may have been used as an oratory for friars. The authors analyse the architectural shape of the matroneum, take into account its original communication with the church and monastery and the remains of its furnishing. The study of the architectonic structure and the staircase that now leads from the nave to the matroneum allows to determine that it was constructed only in the eighteenth century. In the Middle Ages, the matroneum was connected to the monastery through a passage that is now bricked up, and to the ground floor of the church it was connected through an older, thirteenth-century staircase tower. A convenient, direct communication between the matroneum and the dormitory, the fact that the monastery was not directly connected to the presbytery, and the fact that the church choir was rebuilt at the end of the fourteenth century reinforce the theory that the matroneum was used for liturgical purposes. The authors also discuss the previously unknown polychrome relics inside the matroneum. These are, respectively, a relic of a fourteenth-century heraldic representation with the head of an ox and a remnant of a figural scene on the northern wall from the last quarter of the fourteenth century. Both paintings have been subjected to in-depth research, including non-destructive methods (XRF, UV and IR). The first of the paintings, probably the coat of arms of a burgher family, may be a proof that the laymen had access to the interior of the matroneum. The second painting reinforces the assumption of the authors regarding the liturgical use of this place.

The aim of the article is to prove the falsity of the thesis formulated in the Deputies’ draft resolution which was submitted to the Sejm of the Republic of Poland on 2 February 2022 (No. 2008). The authors of the draft requested that the codex with the work Epistola de laudibus augustae bibliothecae atque libri quatuor versibus scripti eodem argumento ad serenissimum Mathiam Corvinum Panoniae regem by Naldo Naldi, written around 1486 and stored in Książnica Kopernikańska in Toruń (ref. 107), to be handed over to Hungary as an expression of ‘gratitude to the Hungarian people’, because the manuscript allegedly ‘has no close connection with Polish history.’ Such a claim is false, but to date there has been no study that would link the history of Toruń’s codex to Naldi’s work. Earlier Polish scholars mentioned this document in the context of later works, such as those written by Peter Jaenichen in 1717, or mentioned only the fact that the work was stored in Książnica Kopernikańska. Hungarian scholars also provide incorrect information claiming that the codex has been in Toruń since 1684. However, source research has shown close connections of Naldi’s work with Toruń at least from 1594, when the codex found its way to the library of the Toruń Academic Gymnasium, and at the same time appeared in print edited by Ulrich Schober. Archival research has also shown the presence of Naldi’s work in many texts of Toruń from the late sixteenth and the first half of the eighteenth century, which testifies to its great significance for the city’s inhabitants and the students (including Hungarians) who came to the city.

The Tuba Dei bell from the tower of St. Johns’ Church, the present-day Cathedral Basilica in Toruń, is one of the largest bells in Poland. It is also one of Toruń’s most important monuments and symbols of the city. It has attracted the interest of researchers not only on account of its uniqueness, but also because of the ongoing dispute regarding the date it was cast. This paper presents a voice in the discussion regarding the dating of the Tuba Dei bell of Toruń. Source literature has accepted the suggestions of the year 1500 or 1522 and various daily dates, and the discrepancies were based on different ways of reading and interpreting the inscription on the bell. The article is an attempt to verify the hypotheses accepted so far based on written sources that have not been included in the findings. In the course of researching medieval accounts of Toruń churches, the authors found information indicating the date the bell was cast. The St. John’s Church account book from 1520–1553 contains data that clearly establishes it as 27 September 1522.

The text constitutes a commentary on the text by Monika Jakubek-Raczkowska and Juliusz Raczkowski, published in Zapiski Historyczne, with regard to the dating of the final expansion of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Toruń to the present form, which extended the church to include the earlier southern wing of the monastery. Based on various evidence (including information that King Casimir the Great is reported to have listened to the organ allegedly located in the northern matroneum of the completed church in 1343), the above-mentioned authors put forward the hypothesis that the expansion may have been carried out in the first half of the 14th century, that the church had already had its present-day three-nave structure, and that the two analysed fragments of paintings, which are located in the niches of the northern wall of the matroneum, are part of a once large composition related to its medieval function within the church. The author of this commentary upholds the findings of his own research published in print in 1966, that the final expansion of the church took place in a later period, while the paintings of the presentday matroneum, analysed by Monika Jakubek-Raczkowska and Juliusz Raczkowski, did not ornament the matroneum, but a room or rooms upstairs in the monastery’s south wing.

Peter Mundy (1596 – ca. 1667), one of the most representative English travellers of his period, visited Gdańsk (Danzig) and Toruń (Thorn) in 1640 and 1642 and described these cities in his Relations. The article includes deliberations concerning Mundy’s descriptions of the two most important cities in Royal Prussia in the context of early modern theory of ekphrasis and the eulogy of the city, represented especially by manuals of preliminary exercises in rhetoric (progymnasmata) and chapters from De inventione et amplificatione oratoria by Gerard Bucoldianus included in Reinhard Lorich’s Scholia attached to his edition of Aphthonius’ Progymnasmata, one of the most popular rhetoric books in the second half of 16th and in 17th centuries. The analysis of the structure and contents of Mundy’s “relations” leads to the conclusion that the English traveller was aware of the early modern theory of description and eulogy of cities but, at the same time, his curiosity made him free to leave the theoretical rules aside and focus himself on interesting technical constructions (“The great Organs in the Pfarrekerke” in Gdańsk or the Toruń bridge) or customs of burghers (“execution of Justice” and “Recreations” in Gdańsk and “A greatt faire” in Toruń).

Medieval religiosity was manifested primarily through the worship of relics and individual saints, organisation of prayers, funding the purchase of candles, reading pious literature, and belief in miracles and epiphany. The knowledge on the subject has been provided through the studies of various medieval written sources and decorative elements in the representation rooms of Teutonic castles, which have survived to this day. Historical materials discovered during archaeological research, and renovation and maintenance works constitute equally important sources for exploring the issue of religiosity among the members of the Teutonic Order. Previously, they had not been analysed in this regard, which prompted the author of the article to put this topic under consideration, based on the example of selected discoveries made in several castles in the area of the former State of Teutonic Order in Prussia. Both the form and ornamentation of the archaeological materials may have referred to the piousness of Teutonic Knights, as indicated by the symbolic significance of the images in question, which are accepted by Christianity. Most depictions were found on the surface of architectural details from church interiors or refectories in high castles. The ornaments on their surfaces made references primarily to the figures of Mary and Christ, as well as to the apostles and parables from the Gospel of St. Matthew. At times, they may also have acted as reminders against the evil that threatened the souls of the brethren.

The article raises the issue of the structure of employment in Toruń (Thorn) at the turn of the twentieth century. The address books used for the analysis came from 1884 and 1908. The occupations were classified under major HISCO groups. It is an international method which enables making comparisons with the results obtained by other researchers. The aim of the text, which is to constitute a basis for more in-depth sociotopographic studies, is to present the structure of employment of heads of households in Toruń in 1884 and 1908, and to analyse the changes taking place therein. The analysis does not refer only to the changes occurring between the major HISCO groups, but also within them, as well as among people who were not employed. The above-mentioned issues provide the context for presenting the dynamic economic, social and spatial development of the city from the mid-nineteenth century until the outbreak of the First World War. They also allowed to demonstrate the expansion of the workers’ district of the city, the creation of a new district for municipal and military officials and the development of the suburbs. The important factors that influenced the development of the city included the creation of new industrial plants, the expansion of fortifications and the inclusion of Toruń in the railroad network. All this influenced the changes in the structure of employment of heads of households between 1884 and 1908. Some of the most significant changes included: a significant increase in employment among women and suburban residents; the formation of a new social group – the factory workers; and an increase in the number of people employed as domestic workers and in the service sector.

The article discusses the issue of giving newly born children first names in two working class residential areas: Mokre in Toruń and Szwederowo in Bydgoszcz, between 1875 and 1914. The source base consisted of parish registers and the birth register of the General Register Office for those areas. The main research objectives were to determine the total population, the denominational structure of the two districts, the number of births with respect to denomination, births in terms of the number of given names, the popularity of first names, second names and the first-name summaries in the denominational context for each district. Both areas showed similar features of the denominational structure: an increasing percentage of Catholics at the expense of Evangelicals, the existence of small communities of Jews and representatives of other Christian denominations. In terms of anthroponymy in working class districts, certain similarities were observed, although there were also differences, primarily in the middle names given to newly born children. In Szwederowo, Catholics far more commonly opted for the first name only, whereas Evangelicals – for one or more middle names. In Mokre, on the other hand, the ratio between persons with first name only and those with middle names was more balanced. In both districts, the differences were mainly in the context of the denominational structure, which involved the attachment of Catholics to names from Christian tradition, especially those derived from the New Testament, while Evangelicals to names of Germanic origin, as well as those referring to the dynasty or literary characters.

The major criterion was not family background, but close ties with the city in question. The list includes people born and educated in Torun and Lviv, who maintained contacts with the cities having moved to another place; the list also embraces people who were born somewhere else, but were associated with the cities or held some important office there. As far as the residents of Torun are concerned, for every 100 there were 90 burghers. Almost 150 biographical entries refer to people connected with Lviv, most of whom were burghers and thirty-six of whom were clergymen of various denominations. The number of women representing both cities is scarce; they are exclusively nuns (only 2% of the biographical entries concern women). Both cities are represented by Murinius, a Dominican priest from Torun whose family town was Lviv. He abandoned the monastic life and became a Lutheran preacher famous for speaking beautiful Polish

He published, for example, the Torun hymnal (1752) and the artistic print to commemorate the 300th anniversary of incorporating Torun and Royal Prussia into the Crown in 1754. The activity of J.Ch. Jungmann after 1759 is not known; he was even omitted from the Torun biographic dictionary. Based on documents found in the State Archive in Gdansk, it is known that J.Ch. Jungmann died in Gdansk on 27 October 1778 and was buried in the church of Saints Peter and Paul. After his death the inheritance proceedings took place; the inventory of his property was carried out, his debts were paid and the costs of his funeral were covered. The heir of his wealth was his son who lived in Tczew. This documentation has allowed us to learn about the life of J.Ch. Jungmann and remember his publishing legacy.

Under the court’s ruling, Mayor Johann Gottfried Rösner and nine other people who were found guilty were beheaded. This case resonated strongly in Europe. The prevailing opinion in the historiography is that the conduct of the municipal authorities following the tumult was slow and indecisive. In the light of the recently discovered sources (fragments of the drafts of city council minutes, originally destroyed during the siege of the city in 1813), it can be concluded that in the first days following the tumult the council did undertake an investigation, in which the blame for provoking the riots was quite explicitly placed on Jesuit students, and information about the incidents was sent to the council’s resident at the royal court in Warsaw. However, the decision to take any further steps was indeed procrastinated. The Jesuits were much quicker to disseminate the information about the harm done to their order in Toruń across the whole country.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to present the protocol from the inspection visit at the Church of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist in 1706 during a general visitation of the Diocese of Chełmno commissioned by Bishop Teodor Andrzej Potocki. So far, this source has been scarcely used in research on Toruń Cathedral, and the information it contains can be used to study the most diverse areas of sciences of history, especially art, bibliology and material culture of the Counter-Reformation era. It constitutes a supplement to earlier protocols that had been published in print, and made during inspection visits ordered by Bishops Andrzej Leszczyński (1647) and Andrzej Olszowski (1667–1672). The document provides a detailed enumeration of the liturgical vessels and vasa non sacra, including silver figurines that contain fragments of relics, which were more numerous than previously thought. The inspector also listed different paraments (e.g. vestments and dalmatics) and the contents of the parish library, which, in addition to papal decrees, canonical literature and popular sermon collections, included works by secular thinkers, including Aristotle, Boethius and Cicero.
