    The design work of the Salesian Coadjutor Jan Kajzer (1892-1976) is not generally known, even though he was an esteemed artist in the inter-war period. He began his education in the years 1908-12 at the Salesian Crafts School in Oświęcim, and subsequently attended the Nuremberg School of Interior Design (1921-22), Cracow’s School of Industrial Arts (1924-26), and the Technische und Kunstgewerbliche Tischler Fachschule in Cothen (Anhalt) (1926). From 1930, Kajzer studied at the Department of Interior Design at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts under, among others, the guidance of Wojciech Jastrzębowski (later on Kajzer became his assistant). On the basis of his design projects, he was invited to join the Ład Artistic Cooperative. At the 1936 Ład’s exhibition, he displayed a set of living-room furniture which was widely praised. He won a number of awards: that of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Public Education in 1936; an individual prize of the National Culture Fund; and a prize of the Guild of Master Carpenters, Turners, and Sculptors in Poznan. During World War II, Kajzer designed many sacral interiors.

    In July 1999, during the reconstruction of the Baroque cupolas of the church towers in the former Cistercians Abbey in Ląd nad Wartą, two copper gilded spheres were disassembled. The following items were found inside the spheres: files of documents written on handmade paper, relics of the bones of the Magi and St. Dionysius inserted in paper packets and a silk pouch, and fragments of the Agnus Dei of Pope Innocent XI. Since the deposits were very poorly preserved, they had to undergo conservation. Having been conserved and appropriately protected, both the documents and relics were deposited in the Archive of Higher Seminary of the Salesians of Don Bosco in Ląd nad Wartą. The documents found in the spheres contained an outline history of the abbey and the founding document of the copper cupolas planted on the towers on 13 June 1720, as well as a list of the Ląd Abbey monks and guests attending the event. The cupolas were founded by Abbot Mikołaj Antoni Łukomski. Both the holy relics and the Agnus Dei medallion fragment were placed in the tower cupolas to protect the church and the abbey from disasters, especially fire, lightening strikes, and floods.

    This article is the fourth of a series entitled “The Post-Cistercian Abbey in Lad as A Cultural Center”. The first and the second articles were published in “Seminare” Vol. 35, No. 3 and 4 in 2014, the third essay appeared in “Seminare” Vol. 36, No. 1 in 2015. This essay presents a résumé of the whole research conducted between September 4th and October 4th, 2013. The research results reveal the existence of a great interest in the monument and set new directions for future cultural proposals. The article points to the need of further research concerning children and youth as this age group was only marginally represented in the research. Primary school children and young people constitute an important part of all visitors to the monastery in Lad.

    Opis:
    Founded in the 12th century, the post-Cistercian Abbey in Ląd is a monument of great im-portance for Polish and European cultural heritage. It is marked for its significant historical, artistic and educational valour. This article opens a series of publications presenting a scientific research on the cultural activities and programs provided for tourists visiting the Abbey. The goal of the article is to gather information about that offer and assess the opinions of tourists on the issue. The research was conducted for a month (4.08 – 4.09.2013). 725 people participated in it answering a 10-point questionnaire. This article presents conclusions based on the answers to the first four questions. Ac-cording to the results, the most attractive cultural offer is visiting the church and the monastery as well as participation in the Festival of Slavic and Cistercian Culture. Further results will be presented successively in next publications.

    Constantine Iłowiecki, who derived from the Ostoja coat of arts, was born in Iłowiec (currently Iłówiec near Śrem) on 17 March 1709 and died on 20 February 1777 in Ląd. After studying at the Academy of Poznan, he entered the Cistercian Monastery in Ląd in 1727. He was ordained in 1732 and in 1733 Antoni Łukomski, the abbot of Ląd, appointed him as his successor and as the prior of the Ląd Monastery. Following Łukomski’s death on 8 May 1750, Constantine Iłowiecki became the abbot of the Ląd Monastery. In the church in Ląd, he issued a stucco tombstone for his predecessor and in the artwork, he posted his initials: ‘C I’ (fig. 1). In 1760, he began the construction of the parish church in Ląd, where his portrait is preserved (fig. 2). In 1752, he became commissioner and inspector general of the Cistercian monasteries of the Polish province, an office which he held for three terms. He authored textbooks on logics, metaphysics, and the philosophy of nature, which are preserved in the Abbey library in Mogiła. The Ląd Monastery features two plaques of cast iron with decoratively composed initials of Abbot Constantine Iłowiecki. These were created after 1752 (figs. 3, 5) and were funded in 1767 by Iłowiecki himself (figs. 4, 6). The plaques commemorate his election as General Commissar of the Cistercian Province and the anniversary of his ordination and entrance into the order.

    In 1182, to the Cistercian abbey in Altenberg next to Cologne, many a Undecim Milia Virginum relic came from the so-called "ager Ursulanus" - the late ancient cemetery discovered in 1106 under the walls of the colony considered to be the burial place of St. Ursula, and the accompanying retinue. The abbey in Altenberg was sending Undecim Milia Virginum relicts to other Cistercian abbeys all over Europe propagating their cult amongst the convent. The cult of Undecim Milia Virginum in Ląd dates back to the very beginning of the abbey that is the 12th century. In the middle of the 13th century, Ląd got from Altenberg relicts of the virgin martyrs of Cologne which are still in the Ląd abbey. In 1721, Abbot Antoni Mikołaj Łukomski founded a monumental reliquienaltar dedicated to St. Ursula and her companions. The altar had been made in the workshop of Ernest Broger in Glogau. It is the largest of the altars dedicated to St. Ursula. The relics of skulls and bones placed at the altar are covered with embroidered fabrics dating back to the 19th century. At that time, the altar was undergoing a major renovation. The renovation of fabrics conducted in 1983 revealed that under the textiles from the 19th century the remains of Medieval and Baroque fabrics had been preserved.

    W 2010 r. jeden z XVIII-wiecznych bocznych ołtarzy kościoła w Lądzie, postanowiono poświęcić męczennikom II wojny światowej: więzionym w Lądzie kapłanom i „Poznańskiej Piątce”. W latach 2011-2013, według koncepcji ks. Janusza Nowińskiego SDB, malarz i rzeźbiarz Janusz Szpyt wykonał nowy wystrój ołtarza: dwa nowe obrazy oraz antepedium. Na tę okazję ks. Janusz Nowiński zamówił u kompozytora Pawła Łukaszewskiego utwór Dominus regit me. Psalm 23 skomponowany na baryton i zespół instrumentalny, którego prawykonanie miało miejsce w Lądzie 28 października 2013 r. W 2014 r. Paweł Łukaszewski włączył utwór Dominus regit me. Psalm 23 do partytury Requiem, które skomponował dla Presteigne Festival w Walii (Wielka Brytania). Requiem Pawła Łukaszewskiego zostało wykonane po raz pierwszy na festiwalu w Presteigne 20 sierpnia 2014 r. Partyturę Requiem wydało drukiem Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne w 2014 r.
    In 2010, a decision was made to dedicate one of the side altars in the Ląd church (Fig. 1) to the Martyrs of World War II: the priests imprisoned in Ląd and the “Poznan Five”. Between 2011 and 2013, following the concept of Father Janusz Nowiński SDB, a painter and sculptor Janusz Szpyt made new elements of the altar: two new paintings and an antependium (Figs. 2-4). Father Janusz Nowiński commissioned a composer Paweł Łukaszewski to write a musical piece Dominus Regit Me. Psalm 23, whose first performance took place in Ląd on 28 October 2013 (Figs. 5-6). It was composed for baritone and musical ensemble. In 2014, Paweł Łukaszewski incorporated Psalm 23 into the score of the Requiem he was composing for the Welsh Presteigne Festival (Great Britain). Paweł Łukaszewski’s Requiem had its first performance at the Presteigne Festival on 20 August 2014. The score of the Requiem was published in 2014 by the Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne.

    Father Francis Szczygłowski (1876-1941), a Catholic priest during the twenty year interwar period, was one of the greatest Salesian benefactors derived from the diocesan clergy. Thanks to his initiative and commitment, the Salesians of Don Bosco began educational and pastoral ministry in Aleksandrów Kujawski (1919) and in Ląd on the Warta River (1921) which lasts up to the present day. This source edition presents an account written by Fr. Szczygłowski about his pastoral and social ministry. It was signed on the 12th of March 1938 and can be found in the collections of the Diocesan Archives of Włocławek, Poland.

    Celem artykułu jest ukazanie znaczenia edukacji aksjomoralnej w procesie budowania ładu społecznego w tak zwanej epoce ponowoczesnej. Konieczność utrzymania ładu społecznego i kultury moralnej jest niezbędnym warunkiem życia społecznego, gdyż jest on wpisany w naturę człowieka. Niepokojące tendencje do podważania fundamentu tego ładu, które przejawiają się w rozchwianiu aksjologiczno-moralnym, skłaniają do jego ochrony, także poprzez wychowanie do wartości, które ten ład budują i zapewniają jego stabilność, przewidywalność i ciągłość, a są nimi między innymi: religia, tabu, dialog, wspólnota, pamięć. Stąd postulat szczególnej ochrony i obrony tych wartości.
    The aim of the article is to present the meaning of axiological and moral education in the process of building social order in the so-called post-modern era. The need to maintain social order and moral culture is an essential condition of social life, since it is intrinsically encoded into a human being’s nature. The disconcerting tendencies to undermine the foundations of this order, which appear as axiological and moral weakening, prompt its protection, through teaching values which build this order and ensure its stability, predictability and continuity. These values include: religion, taboos, dialogue, community, collective memories. Therefore, if we wish to live in a truly human world, we need to defend and protect these values in particular.

    In the post-Cistercian Abbey in Ląd-on-Warta a unique monument testifying to the com-memoration of the deceased brothers and, at the same time, illustrating the historical tradition of Cistercian Abbeys in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, namely Tabula Memorialis, has been preserved till our times. and feature the abbreviations: RR. PP. VV. Fr. (Reverendi Patres Venerendi Fra-tres) accompanied by the Latin name of a respective Cistercian Abbey. The Abbeys come in the fol-lowing order: 1. Ląd, 2. Jędrzejów, 3. Wągrowiec, 4. Oliwa, 5. Sulejów, 6. Wąchock, 7. Koprzywnica, 8. Mogiła, 9. Obra, 10. Paradyż, 11. Szczyrzyc, 12. Koronowo, 13. Bledzew, 14. Pelplin. The squares in each row are covered with a wooden lid that can be pulled out showing a pair of vanitative em-blems painted against a cinnabar background. Each representation is accompanied by a banderole with a commentary. Tabula Memorialis was made in ca. 1745 to celebrate the 600th anniversary of the Ląd Abbey foundation. Its composition presents two content layers: a didactic one dedicated to the reflection on death (meditatio mortis, ars moriendi), and the historical one: presenting the foundation of 14 Cistercian Abbeys in the Polish Cistercian Province and promoting Ląd as the oldest one among them in Poland. Tabula Memorialis served for the ceremony of absolution of the dead during their collective recollection conducted in the chapter house.
