Polish language in Brazil
Opis:
The subject matter of this paper is Polish–Portuguese bilingualism observed in one of the Brazilian villages founded by Polish rural immigrants in the second half of the 19th century in the south of the country. The primary instrument for collecting data were the interviews conducted with 48 residents of the village in 2018. The presented outcome confi rms the trends noticed in the study by S. Kucharski [1996] and W. Miodunka [2003]; namely, the fairly high level of preservation of Polish in Brazil and discrepancies in the level of command of the spoken and written code by the interviewees. The analysed data permit also the ascertainment of the phenomenon that Polish is being forgotten in the bilingualisation process and that it is disappearing in the surveyed village in general.

This paper discusses the situation of trilingualism of students at Lviv schools with Polish as the language of instruction. Earlier linguistic studies paid no attention to the individuals of non-Polish descent who attended such schools. Part one of this paper presents the profile of the examined group, which comprised, apart from persons of Polish descent, individuals of non-Polish descent, for whom Polish is a foreign language. The next part discusses the results of sociolinguistic surveys concerning the motivation for learning Polish and the level of command of the languages used by the respondents. It also presents preferences as regards the use of media and non-verbal communication. The final part describes the interviewees’ attitude to the languages as well as to Poland and Ukraine. The studies were conducted using earlier research concepts regarding Polish–foreign language bilingualism by Ewa Lipińska, Władysław Miodunka, Marzena Błasiak, and Pavel Levchuk. In the description of the private-sphere language choice, William Mackey’s method was applied.

Rok 1920 (1920) is the most extensive text by Józef Piłsudski. The image of the author inferred from the linguistic features of the text is one of a typical user of general Polish in the interwar period, that is a representative of the Polish intelligentsia of those days. The idiolectal and regional characteristics are infrequent or occasional (in the phonetic, grammatical, and lexical layers). The stylistics of the treaty is primarily the stylistics of a realistic description and the author’s narrative, used effi ciently and displaying a great narrative talent and the knowledge of realities.

The Polish-language profile of „Poradnik Językowy” („The Linguistic Guide”) determines the fact that the studies regarding the Ukrainian language constitute a relatively small portion of the publications (66 in total). However, they have been published nearly since the initial annals and their subject matters include (in the quantitative order): 1) the presence of the Polish language in Ukraine, 2) the presence of the Ukrainian language in Ukraine, 3) the issues of the Slavic languages in general, 4) comparative (including contrastive) studies, 5) Ukrainisms present in the Polish language. The publications depict the status of the Ukrainian language in Ukraine and in contacts with the Polish language, interests of (Polish and Ukrainian) linguists in these issues, and trends in the language policies of both states.

The entire period 1944-2018 was divided chronologically into two parts: the period 1944-1989, which was the period of the Polish People’s Republic (PRL), when Poland was part of the Socialist Bloc, led by the USSR, and the period 1989-2018, when the Polish authorities and society built a free and independent Republic of Poland in unison. In the former period, special attention is given to the period 1978-1990, when Cardinal Karol Wojtyła’s election as Pope John Paul II first and the establishment and activity of the Solidarity movement next made Poland a country well-known and admired all over the world, which largely influenced the transformation of the awareness of the Polish community in many countries. All this constitutes a background for the presentation of the history of education of the Polish community abroad, foundation of schools of the Polish language and culture at numerous Polish institutions of higher education, with the University of Warsaw in the lead and fi nally, the process of developing Polish Studies abroad as well as the process of integrating Polish and foreign specialists in Polish studies in the period 1997-2018.

Opis:
On the occasion of Poland’s regaining its independence in 1918, several papers have been written to depict the development and transformations of the Polish language over the period 1918–2018. However, none of the studies covered popularising Polish by emigrant communities in various countries around the world, preserving it and passing it down to new generations in a bilingual environment, and its teaching not only in ethnic schools but also in higher education institutions. This paper addresses the abovementioned issues by presenting relations between the Polish state and emigration communities in the period 1918–1939 first. A characteristic typical of this period was the fact that governmental authorities treated emigrants and their descendants as Poles around the world who may pursue the objectives of the Polish foreign policy. With this in mind, the World Union of Poles (Światpol) was established in 1934, which was opposed by representatives of the Polish American community. A further part of the paper presents the organisation of summer school of the Polish language and culture at the University of Warsaw and the Jagiellonian University in Kraków beginning from 1931, teaching of the Polish language in Polish schools abroad and aid provided to them by Poland, and finally, courses of Polish and programmes in Polish Studies offered at foreign universities.

The results of the research conducted in the period 2015–2022 in the educational system for Polish communities on the East Coast of the USA permit the conclusions on the necessity to modify the teaching methods, techniques, and materials used in teaching Polish to children and youth of Polish descent.

Opis:
The author presents the functions of the lexical exponents of gradations with a dialectal origin, namely of: the adjective galanty and the averbs galancie, galancio, galanto in the colloquial Polish language and Polish dialects. Based on dialectal and general Polish data coming from published works (dictionaries, atlases, dialectal monographs) and unpublished collections of vocabulary, she discusses their gradational meanings falling into three semantic categories: sufficiency (e.g. galancie osób pojechało (‘quite many’ people have gone)), completeness (e.g. zupa galanta (‘quite a good’ soup)), and intensity (e.g. galancie wąski (a ‘very’ narrow)). The identifi cation of the meanings of the discussed forms as exponents of the intensity of a characteristic is, in most cases, conditioned on the context. They express various values of many gradational characteristics which are extracted while being actualised in a sentence. Due to their limited distribution (mainly Greater Poland, Kuyavia, Łęczyce and Sieradz Land, northern Lesser Poland, Masovia, Chełmno and Dobrzyń Land) and presence in the colloquial Polish language, the discussed forms can be classified as regionalisms with a dialectal origin.

The bilingual Latin–Polish editions of the grammar book by Aelius Donatus, published in the 16th–18th c., are among the earliest studies comprising Polish grammatical terms. The terminology found in these editions forms an organised, hierarchical structure, which was transferred from the Latin original to the Polish translation. There are particular coincidences between Latin–Polish editions of Donatus and the dictionary of 1542 by Bartholomew of Bydgoszcz, which ascertains the thesis on a major infl uence of these editions on the dictionary and might serve as an argument for the existence of an earlier version of Donatus, one dating back to ca. 1530.

The first Polish grammatical terms came into existence as early as in the Middle Ages. Due to the role played by Latin in the Polish culture and science, the relations between the Polish terminology under forma tion and the already formed Latin terminology are signifi cant. This is noticeable not only in bilingual (Latin–Polish) grammar book by E. Donat but also in the first Polish-language grammar books by W. Szylarski and O. Kopczyński. The latter rendered considerable services to the codifi cation of grammatical terminology. In the 19th century, it was impossible to popularise J. Przybylski’s and A. Morzycki’s innovative terminological propositions. The development of the Polish scientific linguistics gives rise to a revision of the earlier grammatical systematics, which results also in a change in the nomenclature. The distinctness of grammatical lexis is evidenced by the glossaries attached to the grammar books. Some of the terms have entered the vocabulary common to various varieties of Polish over time.

Termin najnowsze dzieje polszczyzny / najnowsze dzieje języka polskiego funkcjonuje od przełomu lat 70. / 80.
The term najnowsze dzieje polszczyzny / najnowsze dzieje języka polskiego (the latest history of the Polish language) has been in use since the late 1970s and the early 1980s. It has brought problems concerning the chronologisation and internal periodisation of that period in the history of the Polish language. The participants of the discourse, which has continued since the early 1990s, include linguists such as Antoni Furdal, Krystyna Kleszczowa, Stanisław Borawski, Stanisław Dubisz, Irena Bajerowa, Ewa Woźniak. Their publications clearly evidence the need for distinguishing the period in the periodisation of the Polish language, while differing as to its specific timeframe, distinction criteria, and internal periodisation. This study aims to compile the data, present the history of the discourse, and make a summary proposal.

Opis:
This is the fi rst in a planned series of papers dedicated to Polish Sign Language (PJM) signs denoting speech. It presents an analysis of twenty different signs attested in the Polish Sign Language Corpus (KPJM) in terms of iconicity as well as metonymies and metaphors used in their formation. The conducted analysis showed that two classes of signs can be distinguished in the examined material: iconic signs making use of metonymy and signs motivated by a conceptual metaphor. The former refer exclusively to the production of speech as opposed to signing: the vehicle is the phonetic act (mouth movement or air movement). Metaphoric signs, in turn, consistently rely on the conduit metaphor, refer to both spoken and signed utterances, and focus on transmission of a semantic content.

Part three presents the important sociolinguistic output referring to the Polish language across the world, Polish-foreign bilingualism, and multilingualism, and fi nally, to teaching Polish as a foreign, second, and heritage language, which contributes to the fl ourishing Polish glottodidactics. There are currently no ambitious actions on the part of the state authorities addressing the evolving Polish glottodidactics, which relies on ad-hoc undertakings of university glottodidactics centres.

A study titled Rys grammatyki języka polskiego (Outline of the Polish grammar) was published in 1857. Antoni Morzycki, the author of the grammar book, was not a philologist by education, he wrote his study out of a sense of civic duty. He founded his concept on the dogma of the speech originating from the Word, as John the Evangelist wrote: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The man received the Word as a gi from God. The author divides grammar into three sections: phonetics and phonology, the science of the word and clause, and spelling. He adopted parallelism of parts of speech and clause as one of the rules organising the grammatical description. The book evoked an intense reaction of his contemporaries.
