Opis:
The Liturgy of the Hours is a Christian misterium, the celebration of which the Second Vatican Council invited not only religious people but the whole People of God, who is the mystical Bride of Christ – the Divine Spouse. It is in the Liturgy of the Hours and throught it that every believer has the opportunity to accomplish the first and primary goal of both the liturgy itself and the entire Christian life. It is all about giving glory to God and gaining the skills to contemplat Him. At the same time, man’s implementaion of the vocation to constantly praise his Creator results in the santification of creation. This santivication in the Liturgy of the Hours especially concers the time that man has during his earthly journey. It may seem that the Liturgy of the Hours belongs to one of the forms of oral prayers. However, such an opinion, although now widely recognized, is the result of only an external perception of this liturgical prayer of the Church. It is true that its structure consists of a large number of texts, mostly biblical texts, mainly taken from the Book of Psalms, which are recited individually or sung by the community. However, if we reach to the genesis of this prayer, if we listen to its „spirit”, it will turn out that hte world of contemplation and even Christian mysticism hidden in it will open up for us. It is hidden under the texts themselves adn the ways in which they should be performed. The fact that the Liturgy of the Hours is, by its very nature, a contempative prayer, determines the ways and principles of its celebration. The musical ways of performing each element of the Liturgy of Hours, characterized in the article, prove that there is a deep, almost organic connection between the mystical spirituality of the Liturgy of the Hours and its practical implementation. Seeking such connection seems indispensable in order to protect the liturgical celebrations from formalism, which kills God’s vibrant life, and as a result there is no connection between God’s life in our Christian life.

Opis:
W języku polskim oficjum to nazywano „Ciemnymi jutrzniami”.
The Paschal Triduum has its unique celebrations throughout the liturgical year, including the morning liturgies of the hours. In many documents the Church has stressed the great importance and value of this form of prayer, encouraging its active, solemn and communal practice. This tradition is also deeply rooted in the Church in Poland. In Polish it was called “Dark Morning Prayers”. In the Liturgy renewed by Vaticanum II, the hours of “Dark Morning Prayers” were completely reformed in their structure and partially in their texts for the first time in history. In order to enable the clergy and the faithful laymen to take an active part in the sung celebrations of the unique office, various local centers of the Church in Poland have been creating melodic arrangements for them over the years. The aim of this article is not so much an in-depth musicological analysis of the melodies created, but rather to indicate and discuss the main directions and compositional concepts that guided the authors of melodies and editors of individual editions in the proposed musical compositions of the texts of interest to us. We hope that the research findings presented in it will contribute to the creation of a single melodic version of this office for the Church in Poland.

Opis:
The cult of saints has been developing very vividly since the beginning of Christianity. It is expressed in three forms: veneratio – worship of the saints; imitatio – imitation of the example of their lives; invocatio – invocation of their intercession, which always leads to the Father glorified in his saints. This is most fully done in the liturgy, and thus also in the Liturgy of the Hours. Therefore, it was important to prepare the texts and melodies for the Liturgy of the Hours, renewed after the Second Vatican Council, which included liturgical memories, feasts and feasts of the Lord’s saints and common texts on saints. The constitutive element of the two basic canonical hours, Matins and Vespers, apart from reading, psalmody and prayer, are the hymns, the texts of which had to be reviewed and prepared according to the rules developed by the specially created Cœtus VII Study Group. The full set of hymns in the post-conciliar Liturgy of the Hours reached an unprecedented number of 291 songs. Most of the hymns of the Liturgy of the Hours were translated into Polish by P. Galiński. Of course, according to the recommendations of the Congregation of Rites, after the publication of the Liturgy of the Hours in the Polish language, it was necessary to make every effort to arrange appropriate melodies for it, especially for the parts intended by nature for singing, such as hymns. This article analyses the texts and melodies of the hymns about saints for the two most important canonical hours: Matins and Vespers, published in Selected hymns for Matins and Vespers, edited by s. J. M. Bujalska PDDM and s. M. D. Nowak PDDM. It was published in 2012 on the initiative of the Disciples of the Divine Master. In addition to the liturgical hymns, the collection discussed here also includes church songs about saints, which can be performed in place of the hymn. The review and analysis of the hymns on saints led to the conclusion that not all the rules of a well composed hymn, developed by Cœtus VII, were applied in the hymn texts on saits, published in the Polish edition of the Book Liturgy of the Hours. In turn, the presentation of compositions about saints included in the collection Selected hymns for Matins and Vespers, showed a huge richness of forms and musical styles that they represent. On the one hand, it revealed strong references to romantic folk songs and a strong attachment to diatonic scales, which are characteristic of Polish liturgical work. On the other hand, it revealed the attempts of composers to refer to contemporary music stylistics. All this gives a wide spectrum of views on contemporary liturgical work and allows us to set new paths for its development.
