Opis:
Exhaust systems are susceptible to in-service wear because of their exposition to the very aggressive corrosive environment. Various stainless steels grades (mostly ferritic and austenitic, but also martensitic and duplex) and protective coatings are currently used for exhaust system elements to increase their aestetics and corrosion resistance. This article focuses on evaluation and comparison of the common corrosion properties of two stainless steels with different microstructures (ferritic and austenitic) used for exhaust system components at the low ambient temperature (35 °C). An aggressive acidic corrosion solution for electrochemical cyclic potentiodynamic tests (ASTM G61) was chosen to simulate partly inner (condensate) and also external environment (reaction of exhaust gases with water, chlorides in solution after winter road maintenance). Exposure tests of the pitting corrosion resistance were performed according to ASTM G48 standard method.

Opis:
Austenitic stainless steels are often used for a materials in the construction of machines and equipment for agricultural and for industrial construction. One of the most important factors constructional material is corrosion resistance. Equipment with austenitic stainless steel can be easy join by quickly welding at a not to high construction price, but one with the serious problem in aggressive environment is their corrosion resistance. A few corrosion processes in crevices and awkward corners can be avoided at the design stage (low roughness parameters, round-section and other). But still the construction material is exposed to corrosion. These steels often come into contact with an aggressive environment based on nitric acid. The main aim of this research is to investigate corrosion resistance in different time (48, 96, 144, 192, 240, 288, 336 hours). For this used weight loss of test samples and its profile roughness. The research was conducted on austenitic stainless steel in grade in Nitrate acid at 333 K. Corrosion tests confirmed that the research this steel in 65% nitrate acid as a corrosive environments is characterized through proportionate to time corrosion process whose measure may be surface roughness. In industrial practice roughness parameters for all the research times can be used for determine the stage and size of steel corrosion.

Opis:
Austenitic stainless steels are materials, that are widely used in various fields of industry, architecture and biomedicine. Their specific composition of alloying elements has got influence on their deformation behavior. The main goal of this study was evaluation of magnetic properties of selected steels, caused by plastic deformation. The samples were heat treated in different intervals of temperature before measuring. Then the magnetic properties were measured on device designed for measuring of magnetism. From tested specimens, only AISI 304 confirmed effect of plastic deformation on the magnetic properties. Magnetic properties changed with increasing temperature.

Stainless steels are structural materials used for a wide range of applications. One of the fields of application of these highly corrosion resistant materials is for various medical applications. Different methods of mechanical property improvement have been studied in recent years to increase the durability of components manufactured from these materials. The main goal of this study was an analysis of fatigue strength improvement of the AISI 316Ti austenitic stainless steel by shot peening. A significant improvement of surface hardness, yield strength and fatigue limit by shot peening was observed in this study. This is despite increasing the surface roughness which usually degrades material’s fatigue strength.

Opis:
Cr-Ni-Mo stainless steels are susceptible to the pitting in aggressive chloride environments. One of the possible ways for the influence of their corrosion behavior is the use of inhibitors as the chemical modification of the environment. The resistance of AISI 316Ti stainless steel to the pitting with/without the inorganic inhibitor was tested by two independent corrosion tests: 24-hours exposure immersion and potentiodynamic polarization test. Both tests were carried out in 1M chloride acidic solution with/without 0.1M molybdate inhibitor at room temperature. Results of immersion tests were evaluated by the corrosion rates calculated from corrosion losses and by the morphology of the pitting. Potentiodynamic polarization curves were evaluated by the pitting potentials.

Opis:
The paper investigates the modelling and optimization of the notch-repaired/friction stir stitched AISI 201 stainless steel welds via the use of a non-consumable tool-based repair process. The repair process employs a sequential hopping-stitching approach. This approach involves the application of two intercepted and completely overlapped plunging actions of a probe-less titanium carbide tool to create an effective refilling and repair of the notched zone. Box-Behnken design (BBD) was employed for the experimental planning, modelling, and optimization of the notch-repair process. Tool rotational speed, penetration depth and dwell time of the tool were the studied process parameters while tensile strength was the response variable. A quadratic model was identified as the best model for the notch-repaired welds based on the combination of a low sequential P-value of 0.008216, a high lack of fit P-value of 0.931366, and a close to unity adjusted and predicted R-square values. The process parameter and their interaction effects on the tensile strength of the repaired notch were identified via the ANOVA analysis. Plunge depth (main effect) and interaction effect of tool rotational speed and dwell time had significant influences on the notch-repair process and the resultant tensile strength of the AISI 201 stainless steel. The visual representations of these effects were shown through the 2D elliptical contour and 3D response surface plots. The optimized process parameters were identified as 1215.9795 rpm, 0.40262212 mm, and 5.98706376 s while the resultant notch-repaired joint yielded a tensile strength of 886 MPa, which is close to the predicted value.

Opis:
AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel is recommended and used for various applications in industry, architecture and medicine. Presence of halides in environment evokes a possibility of the local corrosion which limits seriously exploitation of this material in aggressive conditions. The presented paper is focused on the pitting corrosion resistance (“as received” steel surface) in 1M chloride solution (pH=1.2) at a common (20 °C) and an elevated (50 °C) ambient temperatures. 24-hours exposure immersion test (ASTM G48) and cyclic potentiodynamic test (ASTM G61) are used as the independent test methods. The exposure immersion test is carried out with cross-rolled and longitudinally rolled specimens and the effect of direction of rolling on the resistance to pitting is studied.
