    Opis:
    This article attempts to figure out the current understanding of public spaces and the contemporary tools for bottom-up activation of public spaces to make them more friendly and functional. The paper investigates contemporary public spaces' challenges and what tools can be used to improve them. In this research, the main issue will be the question: what kind of tools and actions can be offered to maintain the quality of public spaces? There are two basic approaches for bettering public spaces: ‘bottom-up’ and ‘top-down’. The paper concentrates on the first approach and considers such methods as place-making and tactical urbanism in designing public spaces along with the community involvement. The work describes an increasing need for an architect, urban designer and planner to be involved in the process of city revitalisation as an interface between the local government and the inhabitants. This study attempts to answer the question of what is a connection between the architectural and social context of the public realm and the relationship between different types of public spaces, what makes public space friendly for users. How do public spaces help to strengthen social connections in towns, what is connection between architectural context and social context of the public realm. The presented study cases explain the different approaches and tools of place-making, including creative place-making.

    Artykuł opisuje powiązania pomiędzy procesami rewitalizacji przestrzeni miejskiej, a wydarzeniami i inicjatywami sportowymi różnej skali i rangi. Można wyodrębnić trzy główne uwarunkowania występowania tych powiązań: 1) podczas organizacji największych wydarzeń sportowych o zasięgu globalnym, takich jak igrzyska olimpijskie oraz mistrzostwa Świata i Europy w piłce nożnej; 2) podczas przedsięwzięć aktywizujących mieszkańców w formie lokalnych wydarzeń sportowych, organizowanych przez samorządy, instytucje i organizacje zaangażowane w lokalne procesy rewitalizacji; 3) podczas oddolnych inicjatyw sportowych podejmowanych samodzielnie przez społeczności lokalne. Pomimo silnych związków sportu i rekreacji z przestrzenią miasta, w Polsce stosunkowo rzadko można zaobserwować wykorzystanie cech i wartości sportu w procesie rewitalizacji przestrzeni miejskiej. W krajach wysoko rozwiniętych jest to zjawisko coraz bardziej powszechne. Na podstawie tej obserwacji postawiono następujące pytania badawcze: Które z przedstawionych powiązań można uznać za najbardziej skuteczne w procesie odnowy przestrzeni miejskiej? Jakie znaczenie ma „odgórność” i „oddolność” wydarzeń? Co jest największą wartością związku sportu i rewitalizacji? W artykule przeanalizowano studia przypadków wybranych miast, polskich i zagranicznych, odnoszących się do wydarzeń i inicjatyw sportowych powiązanych z procesami odnowy miejskiej. Opisane wydarzenia pokazują, że im wyższa ranga imprezy, tym bardziej działania rewitalizacyjne sprzyjają podnoszeniu wizerunku zewnętrznego miasta i dotyczą przekształceń przestrzeni publicznej, zaś mniej powiązane są z rzeczywistymi problemami lokalnych społeczności. Z kolei inicjatywy oddolne skupiają się przede wszystkim na integracji mieszkańców i włączeniu społecznym poprzez różne formy aktywności fizycznej, co może być cennym elementem procesu rewitalizacji społecznej.
    The article describes the links between the processes of urban regeneration and the sporting events and initiatives of different scale and rank. Three main conditions of the existing of these links can be extracted: 1) during the organization of the sporting mega-events of the global range, like the Olympic Games and the World and European Football Championships; 2) during the projects activating the residents in the form of the local sporting events, organized by the local authorities, institutions and organizations engaged in the local processes of urban revitalization; 3) during the bottom-up sporting initiatives undertaken by the local communities themselves. Despite the strong connections between sport and recreation and the urban space, the use of the features and values of sport in the processes of urban regeneration can be observed in Poland relatively rarely. In the developed countries this phenomenon is more and more common. Based on these observations the following research questions had been put: Which of the presented solutions could be considered as the most effective in the process of urban regeneration? What is the significance of the “bottom-up’ and “top-down” events. What is the greater value of sport and revitalization? In the paper different case studies have been discussed, both Polish and foreign, related to the sporting events and initiatives linked to the process of urban regeneration. The described events show, that the higher rank of the event is, the more the regeneration processes improve the image of the city and are related to the transformations of the public space, but are less connected with the real needs of the local communities. In turn, the bottom-up initiatives most of all are focused on the integration of the residents and their social inclusion through the different forms of the physical activities. This can be the significant element of the social revitalization process.
